Tunneling decay of self-gravitating vortices

<P>We investigate tunneling decay of false vortices in the presence of gravity, in which vortices are trapped in the false vacuum of a theory of scalar electrodynamics in three dimensions. The core of the vortex contains magnetic flux in the true vacuum, while outside the vortex is the appropriate topologically nontrivial false vacuum. We numerically obtain vortex solutions which are classically stable; however, they could decay via tunneling. To show this phenomenon, we construct the proper junction conditions in curved spacetime. We find that the tunneling exponent for the vortices is half that for Coleman-de Luccia bubbles and discuss possible future applications.</P>
Ultrasonography of adnexal causes of acute pelvic pain in pre-menopausal non-pregnant women

Acute-onset pelvic pain is an extremely common symptom in premenopausal women presentingto the emergency department. After excluding pregnancy in reproductive-age women,ultrasonography plays a major role in the prompt and accurate diagnosis of adnexal causesof acute pelvic pain, such as hemorrhagic ovarian cysts, endometriosis, ovarian torsion, andtubo-ovarian abscess. Its availability, relatively low cost, and lack of ionizing radiation makeultrasonography an ideal imaging modality in women of reproductive age. The primary goal ofimaging in these patients is to distinguish between adnexal causes of acute pelvic pain thatmay be managed conservatively or medically, and those requiring emergency/urgent surgical orpercutaneous intervention.
Transient testing from LV / SC coupled analysis by new shock synthesis

This paper deals with the idea to replace the usual high-level sine sweep test on shaker at system level, very severe, by a low level one completed by a transient test in the same configuration, in order to be more representative of the real environment, thus limiting over testing and improving the payload comfort. The problem of the transient test specification is first discussed. The proposed solution is to derive from LV/SC coupled analyses a shock response spectrum corresponding to two damping ratios. Then, the question of adequate shock synthesis is tackled. A new method with a given spectrum is considered for better potential and accuracy than the usual wavelets. A campaign on the Intespace bi-shaker devoted to system level showed its capability to perform the resulting test with one spectrum. First investigations to extend this approach to two spectra are in progress.

Pelvic pain and vaginal bleeding are common symptoms in postpartum women presenting to the emergency room (ER). Pelvic ultrasonography plays a crucial role in evaluating symptomatic postpartum patients by allowing a rapid diagnosis and treatment initiation. The main goal of imaging is to distinguish between causes of pelvic pain and vaginal bleeding that may be managed conservatively and those requiring emergent intervention. This pictural essay focuses on the ultrasonographic features of common postpartum conditions for which patients may present to the ER with vaginal bleeding and pelvic pain, including retained products of conception, endometritis, uterine arteriovenous malformation, uterine artery pseudoaneurysm, ovarian vein thrombosis, bladder flap hematoma, and uterine dehiscence/rupture.
Diagnosing ectopic pregnancy in the emergency setting

Ectopic pregnancy is the implantation of a fertilized egg outside the uterine endometrial cavity. For women presenting to the emergency department with abdominal pain and/or vaginal bleeding, ectopic pregnancy is an important diagnostic consideration. The diagnosis is made based on laboratory values and ultrasound imaging findings. The ultrasound appearance of both normal early pregnancy and ectopic pregnancy are variable and often subtle, presenting diagnostic challenges for radiologists. This pictorial essay describes and illustrates the sonographic findings of ectopic pregnancy and reviews the differential diagnoses that can mimic ectopic pregnancy on ultrasound. With the possibility of medical management, the value of early detection and prompt initiation of treatment has increased in improving clinical outcomes and preventing the complications of ectopic pregnancy

<P>Electrical characteristics of metal contacts to a laser-irradiated thin-film N-polar n-type GaN surface are investigated. It is shown that the laser irradiation of the N-polar n-GaN results in a significant increase (as high as 3.0 times 10<SUP>20</SUP> cm<SUP>-3</SUP>) in the electron concentration and a decrease in the Schottky barrier height by 0.05 eV (0.28 eV), as estimated using Pt-based Schottky diodes (X-ray photoemission spectroscopy). Ti/Al contacts to the laser-irradiated N-polar sample exhibit an excellent Ohmic behavior with thermal stability up to 600degC, indicating that the laser irradiation treatment can be a very promising technology in practical applications.</P>
