Objective: To systematically review the effects of protein supplementation in older adults with sarcopenia.Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase databases until May 2023. The inclusion criteria were as follows: (1) randomized controlled trials with a quantitative study design; (2) studies with a study group of older adults with sarcopenia; (3) studies comparing muscle mass, muscle strength, and performance of older adults with sarcopenia after protein supplementation; and (4) studies published up to May 2023.Results: Six retrospective comparative studies, including 715 patients, met the inclusion criteria. The nutritional supplementation group exhibited significant improvement in appendicular skeletal muscle mass (standardized mean difference [SMD]=0.41; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.24–0.58; p<0.001; I<sup>2</sup>=1%), while handgrip strength (SMD=0.37; 95% CI, -0.32–1.07; p=0.29; I<sup>2</sup>=94%) and Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) (SMD=0.35; 95% CI, -0.47–1.18; p=0.40; I<sup>2</sup>=94%) showed a tendency for improvement.Conclusion: Nutritional supplementation with protein increased appendicular muscle mass in older adults with sarcopenia and improved handgrip strength and SPPB scores.
Prefrontal-limbic change in dopamine turnover by acupuncture in maternally separated rat pups.

<P>The present study investigated the possible role of acupuncture in alleviating depression-like behavioral changes and examined changes in the levels of serotonin (5-HT), dopamine (DA), and their metabolites in the hippocampus (HP) and prefrontal cortex (PFC) of maternally separated rat pups. On postnatal day 15, rat pups were maternally separated and received acupuncture stimulation at acupoint HT7 or ST36 once a day for 7 days. Then, on postnatal day 21, a tail suspension test was performed, and the HP and PFC were harvested. Levels of 5-HT, 5-hydroxyindole-3-acetic acid (5-HIAA), DA, and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) in the tissue and corticosterone (CORT) in plasma were then measured. The total duration of immobility in maternally separated rat pups increased after maternal separation, and this increase was alleviated by acupuncture stimulation at HT7. The 5-HIAA/5-HT ratio and the levels of 5-HT and 5-HIAA were not significantly changed, but those of the DA and the DOPAC/DA ratio were significantly lower and that of CORT was significantly higher after maternal separation. The maternal separation-induced changes of the DOPAC/DA ratio and the CORT level significantly alleviated after acupuncture stimulation at HT7. These results suppose that the functional recovery of prefrontal-limbic system by acupuncture stimulation plays an important role in acupuncture-induced benefits in this animal model of depression.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The dry storage system has received immense attention for its safe and passive cooling mechanism as a method for managing highly radioactive spent fuels that inevitably result while using nuclear power. In order to ensure the integrity of the spent fuel cladding, it is important to accurately predict heat transfer characteristics inside the system. In the study, we investigated local flow field and heat transfer characteristics of natural circulation flow at a sub-channel scale inside a downscaled dry storage system. Natural circulation flow was generated with an 8 × 8 rod bundle heaters at a power level equivalent to the decay heat of the spent fuels. The temperature and flow field were measured with thermocouples and the non-intrusive particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique by assuming axisymmetry, respectively. The results indicated that the flow at the upstream of the spacer grid rapidly accelerated at a short distance prior to entering the spacer grid due to blockage effect of a spacer grid. At the downstream, the accelerated flow is discharged as a form of jet and slowly recovers its original velocity with respect to a relatively longer decelerating region. Heat transfer characteristics inside the sub-channels were elucidated by analyzing both flow field and temperature measurements. Empirical correlations for local Nusselt number were derived by using a combination of local Grashof and local Reynolds number. The correlations indicate a clear relation between local flow field and heat transfer characteristics. The flow acceleration caused by the blockage effect of the spacer grid intensified the forced convective effect that increased the local heat transfer rate.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Made test section with height half that of prototypic canister and 8 × 8 rod bundle. </LI> <LI> Investigated local natural circulation flow field in sub-channel scale using PIV. </LI> <LI> Local flow acceleration, initialization of flow boundary layer observed downstream. </LI> <LI> Derived empirical correlations for heat transfer characteristics inside sub-channel. </LI> <LI> Correlations also explained increase in heat transfer downstream of the spacer grid. </LI> </UL> </P>

The control algorithms for the electronic timer, which regulate the fuel injection timing of the Diesel engine fuel injection system, were developed by using the simplified effective dynamic models.<br/> The electronic timer assembly was modeled as the first order with time delay. The various parameters in the model were obtained from experimental data. This model was effectively used for the development of control algorithms of the fuel injection timing system.<br/> The displacement control algorithm and the rpm-disturbance control algorithm were used for the fuel injection timing control. These control algorithms result in the effective and practical control of the fuel injection timing.<br/>
