Non-linear aero-elastic response of a multi-layer TPS

The aim of the present work is to present a computational study of the non-linear aero-elastic behavior of a multi-layered Thermal Protection System (TPS). The severity of atmospheric re-entry conditions is due to the combination of high temperatures, high pressures and high velocities, and thus the aero-elastic behavior of flexible structures can be difficult to assess. In order to validate the specific computational model and the overall strategy for structural and aerodynamics analyses of flexible structures, the simplified TPS sample tested in the 8' High Temperature Tunnel (HTT) at NASA LaRC has been selected as a baseline for the validation of the present work. The von $K{\acute{a}}rm{\acute{a}}n^{\prime}s$ three dimensional large deflection theory for the structure and a hybrid Raleigh-Ritz-Galerkin approach, combined with the first order Piston Theory to describe the aerodynamic flow, have been used to derive the equations of motion. The paper shows that a good description of the physical behavior of the fabric is possible with the proposed approach. The model is further applied to investigate structural and aero-elastic influence of the number of the layers and the stitching pattern.

The purpose of this study is to describe and contrast the determinants and outcomes of Korean women's interracial marriages in the US. Social scientists in general agree on intermarriage being an indicator of the extent to which minorities have assimilated into the host society. However, very few studies have ever attempted to discern the socioeconomic outcomes of the marriage contracts of minorities. In a multivariate context, this study seeks to fill this information gap and examine the consequences of interracial marriage. In order to investigate the effects of interracial marriage on the socioeconomic well being of individuals, we examine two types of residential outcomes-homeownership and household overcrowding. We specify a pairwise two-stage probit model, using 5 percent of the US census data (Public Use Micro Sample A) in 1990. The results show that for Korean women married to white American men-compared to their in-married counterparts-the probability of living in houses they own increases and living in overcrowded houses decreases. The present study concludes that intermarriage is not only a good means to achieve better socioeconomic status but is also a result of assimilation.

Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus) is used primarily as an adaptogen herb and also for its immune stimulant properties in Western herbal medicine. Another closely related species used in East Asian medicine systems i.e. Kampo, TCM (Manchuria, Korea, Japan and Ainu of Hokkaido) and also called Siberian ginseng (Acanthopanax senticosus) also displays immune-stimulant and anti-cancer properties. These may affect tumour growth and also provide an anti-fatigue effect for cancer patients, in particular for those suffering from lung cancer. There is some evidence that a carbohydrate in Siberian ginseng may possess not only immune stimulatory but also anti-tumour effects and also display other various anti-cancer properties. Our study aimed to determine the inhibitory and also proliferative effects of a methanol plant extract of Siberan ginseng (E. senticosus) on various cancer and normal cell lines including: A-549 (small cell lung cancer), XWLC-05 (Yunnan lung cancer cell line), CNE (human nasopharyngeal carcinoma cell line), HCT-116 (human colon cancer) and Beas-2b (human lung epithelial). These cell lines were treated with an extract from E. senticosus that was evaporated and reconstituted in DMSO. Treatment of A-549 (small cell lung cancer) cells with E. senticosus methanolic extract showed a concentration-dependent inhibitory trend from $12.5-50{\mu}g/mL$, and then a plateau, whereas at 12.5 and $25{\mu}g/mL$, there is a slight growth suppression in QBC-939 cells, but then a steady suppression from 50, 100 and $200{\mu}g/mL$. Further, in XWLC-05 (Yunnan lung cancer cell line), E. senticosus methanolic extract displayed an inhibitory effect which plateaued with increasing dosage. Next, in CNE (human nasopharyngeal carcinoma cell line) there was a dose dependent proliferative response, whereas in Beas-2 (human lung epithelial cell line), an inhibitory effect. Finally in colon cancer cell line (HCT-116) we observed an initially weak inhibitory effect and then plateau.

In the present study, dynamic stability of a viscoelastic cantilevered pipe conveying fluid which fluctuates harmonically about a mean flow velocity is considered; while the fluid flow is exhausted through an inclined end nozzle. The Euler-Bernoulli beam theory is used to model the pipe and fluid flow effects are modelled as a distributed load along the pipe which contains the inertia, Coriolis, centrifugal and induced pulsating fluid flow forces. Moreover, the end nozzle is modelled as a follower force which couples bending vibrations with torsional ones. The extended Hamilton's principle and the Galerkin method are used to derive the bending-torsional equations of motion. The coupled equations of motion are solved using Runge-Kutta algorithm with adaptive time step and the instability boundary is determined using the Floquet theory. Numerical results present effects of some parameters such as fluid flow fluctuation, bending-to-torsional rigidity ratio, nozzle inclination angle, nozzle mass and viscoelastic material on the stability margin of the system and some conclusions are drawn.
Adjuvant-dependent innate and adaptive immune signatures of risk of SIV<sub>mac251</sub> acquisition

<P>A recombinant vaccine containing Aventis Pasteur's canarypox vector (ALVAC)-HIV and gp120 alum. decreased the risk of HIV acquisition in the RV144 vaccine trial. The substitution, of alum with the more immunogenic MF59 adjuvant is under consideration for the next efficacy human trial. We found here that an ALVAC-simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) and gp120 alum (ALVAC-SIV + gp120) equivalent vaccine, but not an ALVAC-SIV + gp120 MF59 vaccine, was efficacious in delaying the onset of SIVmac251 in rhesus macaques, despite the higher immunogenicity of the latter adjuvant. Vaccine efficacy was associated with alum-induced, but not with MF59-induced, envelope (Env)-dependent mucosal innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) that produce interleukin (IL)-17, as well as with mucosal IgG to the gp120 variable region 2 (V2) and the expression of 12 genes, ten of which are part of the RAS pathway. The association between RAS activation and vaccine efficacy was also observed in an independent efficacious SIV-vaccine approach. Whether RAS activation, mucosal ILCs and antibodies to V2 are also important hallmarks of HIV-vaccine efficacy in humans will require further studies.</P>
