• A Crystalline Plasticity Finite Element Method for Simulation of the Plastic Deformation of AZ31 Magnesium Alloys

        Dayong Li,Shaorui Zhang,Weiqin Tang,Shiyao Huang,Yinghong Peng 한국소성가공학회 2010 기타자료 Vol.2010 No.6

In this paper, a constitutive framework based on a crystalline plasticity model is employed to simulate the plastic deformation of AZ31 magnesium alloy, which posses the hexagonal close packed (HCP) crystal structure. Dislocation slip and mechanical twinning are taken into account in the model. The successive integration method is used to determine the active slip systems, and the contribution of twinning to the grain reorientation is treated by the PTR method. The FE model is introduced into ABAQUS/Explicit through a user material subroutine (VUMAT). Three deformation processes of AZ31 magnesium alloy, including tension, compression and a stamping process, are simulated with the present method. The simulation results are compared with experiment and those presented in the literature.

      • A mechanical metamaterial made from a DNA hydrogel.

        Lee, Jong Bum,Peng, Songming,Yang, Dayong,Roh, Young Hoon,Funabashi, Hisakage,Park, Nokyoung,Rice, Edward J,Chen, Liwei,Long, Rong,Wu, Mingming,Luo, Dan Nature Pub. Group 2012 Nature nanotechnology Vol.7 No.12

Metamaterials are artificial substances that are structurally engineered to have properties not typically found in nature. To date, almost all metamaterials have been made from inorganic materials such as silicon and copper, which have unusual electromagnetic or acoustic properties that allow them to be used, for example, as invisible cloaks, superlenses or super absorbers for sound. Here, we show that metamaterials with unusual mechanical properties can be prepared using DNA as a building block. We used a polymerase enzyme to elongate DNA chains and weave them non-covalently into a hydrogel. The resulting material, which we term a meta-hydrogel, has liquid-like properties when taken out of water and solid-like properties when in water. Moreover, upon the addition of water, and after complete deformation, the hydrogel can be made to return to its original shape. The meta-hydrogel has a hierarchical internal structure and, as an example of its potential applications, we use it to create an electric circuit that uses water as a switch.

Analysis of the potential pathways and target genes in spinal cord injury using bioinformatics methods

        Gang Zhao,Chunzheng Gao,Dayong Peng,Meng Chen,Guilai Zuo,Shiying Shan 한국유전학회 2016 Genes & Genomics Vol.38 No.7

Spinal cord injury (SCI) remains to be the most devastating type of trauma for patients because of long lasting disability and limited response to the acute drug administration and efforts at rehabilitation. With the purpose to identify potential targets for SCI treatment and to gain more insights into the mechanisms of SCI, the microarray data of GSE2270, including 119 raphe magnus (RM) samples and 125 sensorimotor cortex (SMTC) samples, was downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus database. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were screened inRM group and SMTC group compared with their corresponding controls, respectively. A protein–protein interaction (PPI) network was constructed based on the common DEGs identified in both RM group and SMTC group. Gene ontology (GO) and pathway enrichment analyses of the overlapping DEGs were performed. Furthermore, the common DEGs enriched in each pathway were analyzed to identify significant regulatory elements. Totally, 173 overlapping DEGs (130 up-regulated and 43 down-regulated) were identified in both RM and SMTC samples. These overlapping DEGs were enriched in different GO terms. Pathway enrichment analysis revealed that DEGs were mainly related to inflammation and immunity. CD68 molecule (CD68) was a hub protein in the PPI network. Moreover, the regulatory network showed that ras-related C3 botulinum toxin substrate 2 (RAC2), CD44 molecule (CD44), and actin related protein 2/3 complex (ARPC1B) were hub genes. RAC2, CD44, and ARPC1B may be significantly involved in the pathogenesis of SCI by participating significant pathways such as extracellular matrix-receptor signaling pathway and Toll-like receptor signaling pathway.

      • Crystal plasticity modeling and neutron diffraction measurements of a magnesium AZ31B plate: Effects of plastic anisotropy and surrounding grains

        Wang, Huamiao,Lee, Soo Yeol,Huang, E-Wen,Jain, Jayant,Li, Dayong,Peng, Yinghong,Choi, Ho-Suk,Wu, Peidong Elsevier 2020 Journal of the mechanics and physics of solids Vol.135 No.-

Abstract

This study used in-situ neutron diffraction measurements and Elastic ViscoPlastic Self-Consistent polycrystal plasticity model, which incorporates a Twinning and DeTwinning scheme (denoted by EVPSC-TDT), to examine the macro-and micro-mechanical behaviors of a rolled AZ31B plate subjected to uniaxial tension. Three specimens were specifically designed for minimum, maximum and intermediate twinning: (1) loading along the rolling direction, (2) loading along the plate normal, and (3) loading along the direction 45° with respect to the plate normal. Apart from the macroscopic stress strain response, the measured diffraction intensities and internal elastic strains were obtained to examine the activities of the deformation modes at the grain level. The diffraction intensity evolution signaled the volume fraction change of twinning, while the internal elastic strain evolution designated the stress partitioning among the grain orientations. The effect of the surrounding grains on the development of the internal elastic strain was investigated by identifying the corresponding deformation mechanisms. Notably, the corresponding modeling work revealed that the EVPSC-TDT model permitted the prediction of the strain hardening and anisotropic behavior along the directions with minimum, maximum and intermediate twinning at the macroscale, and the evolution of the diffraction intensities and internal strains at the microscale. The results provide a physical understanding of the effects of the load direction, texture and surrounding grains on the role of the deformation modes in hexagonal close-packed polycrystalline materials.
