How Paternalistic Leadership affects Employee Voice Behavior in Korean Hierarchical Organizations?

This study aims to examine the impact of Korean paternalistic leadership under a hierarchical structure on employee voice and also to compare the differences in leaders' behaviors-authoritarian, benevolent, and moral, and the effects on employee voice between governmental organizations and Quasi-government organizations. The sample of governmental organizations includes 195 employees under job control from at least middlerange or higher managers at local governments and local police agencies in Daegu and Busan metropolitan. The other sample also includes 189 employees reporting directly to managers with job control in public enterprises and government-funded Korean institutes in the same cities. This study employs t-test and regression analysis to test presumed hypotheses. As the results of the analysis, there is a significant difference in authoritarian leadership between governmental organizations and Quasi-government organizations, but both benevolent and moral leadership are not. Benevolent and moral leadership are positively related to employee voice, but authoritarian leadership is not. Based on the analytical results, this research suggests the theoretical implications and the limitations on the applicability of paternalistic leadership into the Korean cultural context for an expanded understanding of leadership theory and practical implications for managers in terms of improvement of employee voice.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The printed circuit heat exchanger (PCHE) is regarded an essential component in the S-CO<SUB>2</SUB> (supercritical carbon dioxide) cycle due to its high compactness and structural rigidity. In this study, a mathematical expression for predicting the thermal performance of cross, parallel, and counterflow PCHE with semicircular channels is proposed as a closed-form, based on an extensive numerical study. The effects the channel size and the channel length are particularly considered. The conduction heat transfer between the hot and cold channels in PCHE is characterized in terms of the conduction shape factor. The convection heat transfer performance in the semicircular channels is also expressed as a function of Graetz number. The overall heat transfer coefficient is then obtained based on the conduction thermal resistance and the convection thermal resistance. Based on the obtained overall heat transfer coefficient, an expression for the effectiveness of the PCHE is developed as a function of geometric parameters, material properties, and the flow condition. Deep sequencing of B cell receptor repertoire

Immune repertoire is a collection of enormously diverse adaptive immune cells within an individual. As the repertoire shapes and represents immunological conditions, identification of clones and characterization of diversity are critical for understanding how to protect ourselves against various illness such as infectious diseases and cancers. Over the past several years, fast growing technologies for high throughput sequencing have facilitated rapid advancement of repertoire research, enabling us to observe the diversity of repertoire at an unprecedented level. Here, we focus on B cell receptor (BCR) repertoire and review approaches to B cell isolation and sequencing library construction. These experiments should be carefully designed according to BCR regions to be interrogated, such as heavy chain full length, complementarity determining regions, and isotypes. We also highlight preprocessing steps to remove sequencing and PCR errors with unique molecular index and bioinformatics techniques. Due to the nature of massive sequence variation in BCR, caution is warranted when interpreting repertoire diversity from error-prone sequencing data. Furthermore, we provide a summary of statistical frameworks and bioinformatics tools for clonal evolution and diversity. Finally, we discuss limitations of current BCR-seq technologies and future perspectives on advances in repertoire sequencing. [BMB Reports 2019; 52(9): 540-547]

This study tests the applicability of concepts of integrated leadership-in-government and follower happiness in South Korea and then comes up with implication and limitations on the applicability based on the study of Mathias et al. (2018). The study adopts eight leaderships: accountability, rule-following, political loyalty, network governance, task-oriented, relations-oriented, change-oriented and diversity-oriented leadership that Mathias et al. (2018) employ from Fernandez et al. (2010) and Tummers and Knies (2016). We also select job satisfaction and self-perceived performance to measure follower happiness depending on Mathias et al. (2018). According to the analytical results, it shows that accountability leadership, network governance leadership, task-oriented leadership, relations-oriented leadership, and change-oriented leadership have positive influences on follower happiness measured. Based on the analytical results, this study suggests implication and limitation on the applicability of the link between integrated leadership and follower happiness in comparison to the results from Mathias et al. (2018).
Exploring the Relationship between Place and Crime Using Spatial Econometrics Model

The purpose of this study is to examine the spatial characteristics of violent and burglary crimes in South Korea. Violent crimes and burglary crimes depend on a spatial setting with good conditions for their criminal purposes. This study defines population density, racial heterogeneity, types of houses, and density of commercial facilities as variables of place affecting crime in cities and counties. The study collects data from 229 cities in Korea to analyze the effect of spatial characteristics on crime. We conduct additional analyses to meet the statistical requisites of the spatial econometrics model using the open-source software R and GeoDa 1.12.1.129. From the analytical result, population density, racial heterogeneity, apartments, and commercial areas relate to crime occurrence. We suggest the implication of the theoretical and practical contributions to the relationship between place and crime.

This study is to corroborate the relationship between organizational size and performance in the Korean government context. Hence, this study aims to advance research on the relationship between organization size and performance by considering mediating variable: organizational goal ambiguity, which helps understand how organizational size affects organizational goal ambiguity in government and the organizational goal ambiguity has an influence on organizational performance. Bases on theoretical review, we assume that there is the inverted U-shaped relationship between the number of employees and budget size and organizational performance. From the results of path analysis, it shows that organizational size in the Korean government has a negative correlation, "a linear relationship", with organizational performance. Budget size has mediating variables, but the number of employees not. We try to suggest implications on the relationship between organizational size and performance in terms of theoretical perspectives in the context of the Korean government.

<P>A new characterization method employing near-field scanning optical microscope (NSOM) is proposed to measure the propagation characteristics of an optical channel waveguide having a solid-state cladding. For the measurement, the cladding material is replaced with the liquid having the same refractive index as that of the removed cladding. Replacing the solid-state cladding with the liquid enables the NSOM probe to reach the core-cladding interface without changing the boundary condition at the interface. The height of the probe immersed into the viscous liquid is done with the information from the surface profile of the naked core. The measured propagation characteristic shows a good agreement with the simulation result.</P>
