In this study, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence polymorphism was used to assess genetic diversity of nine Vietnamese local chicken breeds. In addition, two Chinese breeds kept in Vietnam were included in the analysis for comparison. A 455-bp fragment of the mtDNA D-loop region was sequenced in 222 chickens of these 11 breeds. As reference, a skeleton was constructed based on chicken mtDNA sequences taken from the Genbank. Haplotypes of the nine Vietnamese local and two Chinese breeds were aligned together with these sequences. The Vietnamese and Chinese breeds showed a high degree of variability. In total, 37 haplotypes were identified in the chicken breeds studied forming eight clades. Thereby, the majority of individuals of the two Chinese breeds grouped together in one clade which is assumed to have its roots in the Indian subcontinent. Although the Vietnamese chicken breeds were distributed across all eight clades, most of them clustered in three main clades. These results suggest that the Vietnamese domestic chickens have originated from multiple maternal lineages, presumably from Yunnan and adjacent areas in China, South and Southwest China and/or surrounding regions (i.e. Vietnam, Burma, Thailand, and India).

<P>The development of a monoclonal antibody (MAb) specific to Drosophila presenilin (Psn) proteins in vivo was the major aim of this study, since the absence of specific antibodies recognizing Psn proteins hampered our progress in understanding Psn functions during development, differentiation, and pathogenesis. By dot blot and immunofluorescence screenings, we found that MAb Psn2G6 specifically recognized Psn proteins in wing imaginal discs and brains of wild-type control W1118 larvae. MAb Psn2G6 also transgenically expressed a long form of wild-type Psn (Psn + 14 WT) proteins in wing imaginal discs of two independent transgenic lines. Transgenic expression of Psn + 14 WT proteins in psn(B3) larvae completely rescued the expression patterns of Psn proteins and the development of wing imaginal discs. In addition, neural hyperplasia observed in wing imaginal discs of psn(B3) larvae was also suppressed.</P>

In this paper we study equivariant crossed modules in its link with strict graded categorical groups. The resulting Schreier theory for equivariant group extensions of the type of an equivariant crossed module generalizes both the theory of group extensions of the type of a crossed module and the one of equivariant group extensions.
Heavy Metal Tolerance of Novel Papiliotrema Yeast Isolated from Vietnamese Mangosteen

Three yeast strains (Hue-1, Hue-8, and Hue-19) with strong heavy metal tolerance were isolated from mangosteen from Hue city, Vietnam. They exhibited identical phenotype and phylogeny. Sequence analysis of the D1/D2 region of the LSU rRNA gene and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region demonstrated that the closest relative of these strains is Papiliotrema sp. with 2.12% and 3.55-3.7% divergence in the D1/D2 domain, and ITS domain, respectively. Based on the physiological, biochemical, and molecular data, the three strains belong to a novel species of Papiliotrema genus, for which the name Papiliotrema huenov sp. nov. is proposed. These strains are highly tolerant of heavy metals compared to other yeasts, being able to grow in the presence of 2mM Pb (II), 2mM Cd (II), and up to 5mM Ni (II), but no growth was observed in the presence of 1mM As (III).
Copper Tolerance of Novel Rhodotorula sp. Yeast Isolated from Gold Mining Ore in Gia Lai, Vietnam

In this study, twenty-five yeast strains were isolated from soil samples collected in the goldmining ore in Gia Lai, Vietnam. Among them, one isolate named GL1T could highly tolerateCu2þ up to 10 mM, and the isolates could also grow in a wide range of pH (3–7), and temperature(10–40 �C). Dried biomass of GL1 was able to remove Cu2þ effectively up to 90.49%with a maximal biosorption capacity of 18.1 mg/g at pH 6, temperature 30 �C, and incubationtime 60 min. Sequence analysis of rDNA indicated this strain was closely related toRhodotorula mucilaginosa but with 1.53 and 3.46% nucleotide differences in the D1/D2domain of the 28S rRNA gene and the ITS1-5.8S rRNA gene-ITS2 region sequence, respectively. Based on phylogenetic tree analysis and the biochemical characteristics, the strainappears to be a novel Rhodotorula species, and the name Rhodotorula aurum sp. nov. is proposed. This study provides us with more information about heavy metal-tolerant yeasts andit may produce a new tool for environmental control and metal recovery operations.
