<P>We have investigated the magnetic M-H loop characteristics of CoCrPt-SiO<SUB>2</SUB> perpendicular recording media as influenced by nonmagnetic ion implantations. We have also developed patterned media via ion implantation using a convenient polymer nanomask approach for local control of coercivity of magnetically hard [Co/Pd]<I>n</I> multilayer film with a [Co 0.3 nm \Pd 0.8 nm] <SUB>8</SUB>/Pd 3 nm/Ta 3 nm layer structure. The CoCrPt-SiO<SUB>2</SUB> magnetic layer having perpendicular magnetic anisotropy is sputter deposited on a flat substrate. The [Co/Pd] <I>n</I> multilayer film with vertical magnetic anisotropy is deposited and the regions corresponding to the magnetic recording bit islands are coated with polymer islands using a nanoimprinting technique. Subsequent ion implantation allows patterned penetration of implanted ions into the [Co/Pd]<I>n</I> multilayer film, thus creating magnetically isolated bit island geometry while maintaining the overall flat geometry of the patterned media.</P>
Investigation of ramped voltage stress to screen defective magnetic tunnel junctions

<P>A ramped voltage stress (RVS) method to screen defective magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) is investigated in order to improve screen accuracy and shorten test time. Approximately 1500 MTJs with 1.25 nm thick tunnel barriers were fabricated for this evaluation, and normal MTJs show a 189% tunnel magnetoresistance ratio, a 365 Ω <I>μ</I>m<SUP>2</SUP> resistance-area product, and a 1.8 V breakdown voltage, which is enough for applying reliable screen tests. We successfully classified MTJs as normal MTJs having good characteristics or defective MTJs having insufficient endurance and showing resistance degradation after only short-term cycling. Using the RVS screen test with low ramp speed, it is demonstrated that remarkable screening performance and little dependence on temperature are obtained for short test time.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Rice straw, an agricultural bioresource, is utilized as a biotemplate in order to synthesize a hybrid TiO<SUB>2</SUB>–SiO<SUB>2</SUB> structure, and the resulting products were used for removing hazardous methylene blue dye from aqueous solutions. Samples of the as-prepared hybrid TiO<SUB>2</SUB>–SiO<SUB>2</SUB> structure are characterized by thermal gravity analysis, field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, nitrogen gas adsorption/desorption measurement, and UV/vis spectroscopy. The results obtained show that the hybrid TiO<SUB>2</SUB>–SiO<SUB>2</SUB> structure possesses both anatase and rutile phases, along with amorphous SiO<SUB>2</SUB>. Its specific surface area is determined to be 141.1m<SUP>2</SUP>/g, and its pore size to be 3.77nm. Light harvesting within the visible-light range is found to be enhanced by the use of this hybrid TiO<SUB>2</SUB>–SiO<SUB>2</SUB> structure. Vertically anisotropically conductive composites with aligned chain-of-spheres of 20 - 75 μm Ni particles in an elastomer matrix have been prepared by curing the mixture at 100°C - 150°C under an applied magnetic field of ~300 - 1000 Oe. The particles are coated with a ~120 nm thick Au layer for enhanced electrical conductivity. The resultant vertically aligned but laterally isolated columns of conductive particles extend through the whole composite thickness and the end of the Ni columns protrude from the surface, contributing to enhanced electrical contact on the composite surface. The stress-strain curve on compressive deformation exhibits a nonlinear behavior with a rapidly increasing Young's modulus with stress (or pressure). The electrical contact resistance Rc decreases rapidly when the applied pressure is small and then more gradually after the applied pressure reaches 500 psi (~3.4 MPa), corresponding to a 30% deformation. The directionally conductive elastomer composite material with metal pads and conductive electrodes on the substrate surface can be used as a convenient tactile shear sensor for applications involving artificial limbs, robotic devices, and other visual communication devices such as touch sensitive screens.
The Smart City Evolution in South Korea: Findings from Big Data Analytics

With the recent global urban issues such as climate change, urbanization, and energy problems, the smart city was proposed as one of the solutions in urban planning. This study introduces the smart city initiatives of South Korea by examining the recent history of smart city policies and their limitations. This case study reflects the experience of one of the countries which thrived to building smart cities as their national key industries to drive economic growth. It also analyzes the trends of the smart city using big data analysis techniques. Although there are obstacles such as economic recession, failing to differentiate from the U-city, low service level than expected smart functionality, We could recognize the current status of the smart city policies in South Korea such as 1) Korean smart city development projects are actively implemented, 2) public consensus suggests that applying advanced technology and the active role of government need, 3) a comprehensive and strategic approach with the integration and application of advanced technologies is required as well, 4) investment by both private and public sectors need to deliver social improvements. This study suggests future direction of smart city polity in South Korea in the conclusion.

<P>We attempted to apply fluorescence resonance energy transfer technology to nucleic acid sequence-based amplification (FRET-NASBA) on the platform of the LightCycler system to detect <I>Aspergillus</I> species. Primers and probes for the <I>Aspergillus</I> 18S rRNA were newly designed to avoid overlapping with homologous sequences of human 18s rRNA. NASBA using molecular beacon (MB) showed non-specific results which have been frequently observed from controls, although it showed higher sensitivity (10<SUP>−2</SUP> amol) than the FRET. FRET-NASBA showed a sensitivity of 10<SUP>−1</SUP> amol and a high fidelity of reproducibility from controls. As FRET technology was successfully applied to the NASBA assay, it could contribute to diverse development of the NASBA assay. These results suggest that FRET-NASBA could replace previous NASBA techniques in the detection of <I>Aspergillus</I>.</P>

최근 Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) 유전자 양성인 지역사회관련 메티실린내성 포도알균이 전세계적으로 보고되고 있지만 국내에서는 아직 드물다. 저자들은 76세 여자환자에서 PVL양성 지역사회관련 메티실린 내성 포도알균에 의한 광범위한 항문주위 농양을 진단하고 성공적으로 치료하였다. 분자역학연구를 통해 본 균주는 미국에서 유행하는 USA300주와 매우 유사하고, staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec mec (SCCmec) type IV, multilocus Sequence typing ST8, spa type type 1, accessory gene regulator locus (agr) group I이 관련되어있었다. 문헌조사 결과 동아시아에서 보고된 PVL 양성 지역사회관련 메티실린 내성 포도알균은 분자역학적 특성이 다양하고, 미국 및 유럽 증례와 비교해 PVL 유전자가 비교적 드물었다. Community-associated methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) with Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) genes have recently emerged worldwide, but infections due to PVL carrying CA-MRSA strains have never been reported in Korea. We report a case of extensive perianal abscess due to PVLU CA-MRSA in a 76-year-o1d Korean female patient, of which genetic background was very close to USA300. It belonged to staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec element (SCCmec) type IV, ST8 of multilocus sequence typing (MLST), type 1 spa type, and accessory gene regulator locus (agr) group I. Comprehensive literature reviews from the Far East showed molecular characteristics were diverse and PVL genes were infrequently found than in western countries.

The main objective of this paper is to develop heating system on battery electric vehicle for range enhancement. In general, PTC heater is widely used on battery electric vehicle. However, according to recent research, the range is reduced by more than 50% due to the amount of power consumption of PTC heater on battery electric vehicle. In order to resolve this problem, additional heating system was adopted in this study. The heating performance, power consumption and range enhancement were analyzed on battery electric vehicle by using bio-ethanol fire-operating heater. This experimental work has done at a low temperature in the wind tunnel. This work gets results that the heating performance is satisfied with target temperature, power consumption is saving 60% and the range is extended up to 53% compared to operating only PTC heater.
