      • A Comparative Study of Ideal Personality between Confucius and Aristotle

        Chuan-gen Huang 한국마음학회 2013 한국마음학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2013 No.1

The ideal personality is an ultimate expectation of personal moral development. It stands for the perfect understanding of personal morality, indicates the orientation of moral development and affects the final tendency of social ethic. Therefore the ideal personality not only becomes the theoretical core and spiritual soul of every morals system but also is the theory focal point of moral theorist in different historical period. Actually the ideal personality is a theoretical expression of the value objective of human development and the strong belief or conviction of human's self-perfection. The huge difference about the ideal personality between Confucius and Aristotle has greatly influenced the differentia of Chinese and Western moral culture. The comparative study will elaborate their respective contents and structures, analyses differences and similarities in the two systems, and discuss the potential significances for understanding ChineseWestern cultural differences and reconstructing modern moral culture.

Alpinate Oxyphyllae Fructus Inhibits IGFII-Related Signaling Pathway to Attenuate Ang II-Induced Pathological Hypertrophy in H9c2 Cardiomyoblasts

        Chuan-Te Tsai,Yung-Ming Chang,Shu-Luan Lin,Yueh-Sheng Chen,Yu-Lan Yeh,Viswanadha Vijaya Padma,Chin-Chuan Tsai,Ray-Jade Chen,Tsung-Jung Ho,Chih-Yang Huang 한국식품영양과학회 2016 Journal of medicinal food Vol.19 No.3

Angiotensin II (Ang II) is a very important cardiovascular disease inducer and may cause cardiac pathological hypertrophy and remodeling. We evaluated a Chinese traditional medicine, alpinate oxyphyllae fructus (AOF), for therapeutic efficacy for treating Ang II-induced cardiac hypertrophy. AOF has been used to treat patients with various symptoms accompanying hypertension and cerebrovascular disorders in Korea. We investigated its protective effect against Ang II-induced cytoskeletal change and hypertrophy in H9c2 cells. The results showed that treating cells with Ang II resulted in pathological hypertrophy, such as increased expression of transcription factors NFAT-3/p-NFAT-3, hypertrophic response genes (atrial natriuretic peptide [ANP] and b-type natriuretic peptide [BNP]), and Gαq down-stream effectors (PLCβ3 and calcineurin). Pretreatment with AOF (60–100 μg/mL) led to significantly reduced hypertrophy. We also found that AOF pretreatment significantly suppressed the cardiac remodeling proteins, metalloproteinase (MMP9 and MMP2), and plasminogen activator, induced by Ang II challenge. In conclusion, we provide evidence that AOF protects against Ang II-induced pathological hypertrophy by specifically inhibiting the insulin-like growth factor (IGF) II/IIR-related signaling pathway in H9c2 cells. AOF might be a candidate for cardiac hypertrophy and ventricular remodeling prevention in chronic cardiovascular diseases.

Geometry Optimization of a Metallic Flexor for Flat Wipers

Huang Ting Chuan,Tsai Jian Wei,Liao Kuo Chi 한국자동차공학회 2021 International journal of automotive technology Vol.22 No.3

In recent years, flat wipers are gradually adopted in the industry of transportation due to the rather simple structure than the standard wiper. A procedure is developed to evaluate the appropriateness of the geometry of a metallic flexor, one of major components of the flat wiper, in this study. The flexor is compressed against a level surface and the corresponding pressure distribution under the flexor is measured by using piezoelectric sensors. Several geometry parameters built in a three-dimensional flexor model are investigated to appraise their influences on the corresponding pressure distribution. A process automation software linked to a computer-aided drawing and a finite element analysis commercial packages are utilized, based on the self-defined performance index, to pursue parameter arrangements proper for the pressure distribution. The present procedures are next applied to a curved windshield glass to evaluate optimized flexor geometries at various locations. Appropriate flexors for the windshield glass are then determined and practically sampled. Dynamic wiping simulations of the integrated flat wiper on the windshield glass are furthermore carried out and the pressure distributions over the sweep range are estimated. Wiping capabilities of the wiper are experimentally observed and compared with the associated numerical results.

        Huang Hao,Han Rui,Huang Ping-Ping,Qiao Chuan-Yue,Bian Shuang,Xiao Han,Ma Lei 한국미생물·생명공학회 2024 Journal of microbiology and biotechnology Vol.34 No.6

This study aimed to develop and assess a chitosan biomedical antibacterial gel ZincOxideGrapheneOxide/Chitosan/β-Glycerophosphate (ZnO-GO/CS/β-GP) loaded with nano-zinc oxide (ZnO) and graphene oxide (GO), known for its potent antibacterial properties, biocompatibility, and sustained drug release. ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) were modified and integrated with GO sheets to create 1% and 3% ZnO-GO/CS/β-GP thermo-sensitive hydrogels based on ZnO-GO to Chitosan (CS) mass ratio. Gelation time, pH, structural changes, and microscopic morphology were evaluated. The hydrogel's antibacterial efficacy against Porphyromonas gingivalis, biofilm biomass, and metabolic activity was examined alongside its impact (MC3T3-e1). The findings of this study revealed that both hydrogel formulations exhibited temperature sensitivity, maintaining a neutral pH. The ZnO-GO/CS/β-GP formulation effectively inhibited P. gingivalis bacterial activity and biofilm formation, with a 3% ZnO-GO/CS/β-GP antibacterial rate approaching 100%. MC3T3-e1 cells displayed good biocompatibility when cultured in the hydrogel extract. The ZnO-GO/CS/β-GP thermo-sensitive hydrogel demonstrates favorable physical and chemical properties, effectively preventing P. gingivalis biofilm formation. It exhibits promising biocompatibility, suggesting its potential as an adjuvant therapy for managing and preventing peri-implantitis, subject to further clinical investigations.

        Damping Applications of Ferrofluids

        Chuan Huang,Jie Yao,Tianqi Zhang,Yibiao Chen,Huawei Jiang,Decai Li 한국자기학회 2017 Journal of Magnetics Vol.22 No.1

Ferrofluids are a special category of smart nanomaterials which shows normal liquid behavior coupled with superparamagnetic properties. One of the earliest and most prospective applications of ferrofluids is in damping, which has prominent advantages compared with conventional damping devices: simplicity, flexibility and reliability. This paper presents the basic principles that play a major role in the design of ferrofluid damping devices. The characteristics of typical ferrofluid damping devices including dampers, vibration isolators, and dynamic vibration absorbers are compared and summarized, and then recent progress of vibration energy harvesters based on ferrofluid is briefly described. Additionally, we proposed a novel ferrofluid dynamic vibration absorber in this paper, and its damping efficiency was verified with experiments. In the end, the critical problems and research directions of the ferrofluid damping technology in the future are raised.

Prioritization of Sleep: Discrepancies Between Attitude and Practice

        Ya-Chuan Huang,Tzu-Ting Lin,Chien-Ming Yang 대한수면연구학회 2023 Journal of sleep medicine Vol.20 No.3

Objectives: With the promotion of sleep through education, an increasing recognition of the importance of sleep among the general public has been observed. However, whether this increased recognition affects sleep practices is unknown. To provide direction for future sleep education programs, this study aimed to explore the consistency between people’s prioritization of sleep among their daily life activities and their actual practice when sleep conflicts with other activities. Methods: The study was a cross-sectional online survey with 898 adults (male:female=372:526; age=39.74±10.04 years). The participants were asked to complete an online survey that required them to 1) rate how important sleep was; 2) prioritize daily life activities including sleep, work, family activities, leisure activities, social activities, and exercise; and 3) recall the actions they undertook at the most recent instance when sleep conflicted with each of the other activities. Results: Although 70.7% of the participants prioritized sleep by placing it in their top three daily life activities, only 35.7% and 38.1% chose to go to sleep when it conflicted with work and family activities, respectively. Gender and occupational factors also significantly influenced the discrepancy between sleep attitudes and practices. Conclusions: Our study demonstrated an inconsistency between reporting sleep as a priority in daily life activities and actual behavioral practices when sleep conflicted with other activities. The results suggest that sleep education should not only emphasize the importance of sleep but also provide practical solutions for circumstances when sleep conflicts with other activities.

Study on the Flavor Contribution of Phospholipids and Triglycerides to Pork

        Ye-Chuan Huang,Hong-Jun Li,Zhi-Fei He,Ting Wang,Gang Qin 한국식품과학회 2010 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.19 No.5

For investigating the flavor contribution of phospholipids and triglycerides to pork, the longissimus muscle of Rongchang (RC) and PIC (bred by PIC Company of England) pig were selectively removed of intramuscular triglycerides or total intramuscular lipids. After cooking, the flavor of different samples was compared by sensory evaluation, gas chromatographymass spectrometry (GC-MS), and electronic nose. The results showed that removing triglycerides had little effect on the aroma of the cooked meat, but when total intramuscular lipids were removed a remarkable difference was observed. The control samples covaried strongly with some lipid-derived products, and the petroleum ether defatted samples also positively related to these compounds, but to a lesser extent, both of them negatively covaried with chloroform-methanol extracted samples which associated with some Maillard reaction products. Moreover the flavor difference between 2 breeds would decrease when triglycerides were removed, and reduce further when phospholipids and triglycerides were removed simultaneously. These results suggested that intramuscular lipids especially phospholipids contributed significantly to pork flavor, the flavor difference between 2 breeds resulted mainly from different intramuscular lipids content and composition.

Ginsenoside Rg3 ameliorates allergic airway infl ammation and oxidative stress in mice

        Wen-Chung Huang,Tse-Hung Huang,Kuo-Wei Yeh,Ya-Ling Chen,Szu-Chuan Shen,Chian-Jiun Liou 고려인삼학회 2021 Journal of Ginseng Research Vol.45 No.6

Background: Ginsenoside Rg3, isolated from Panax ginseng, has anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor activities. It is known to reduce inflammation in acute lung injury in mice, and to reduce the expression ofinflammatory cytokines and COX-2 in human asthmatic airway epithelium. In this study, we attemptedto determine whether ginsenoside Rg3 inhibits airway inflammation, oxidative stress, and airwayhyperresponsiveness (AHR) in the lungs of asthmatic mice. We also investigated its effects on oxidativestress and the inflammatory response in tracheal epithelial cells. Methods: Asthma symptoms were induced in female BALB/c mice sensitized with ovalbumin (OVA). Micewere divided into five groups: normal controls, OVA-induced asthmatic controls, and asthmatic micetreated with ginsenoside Rg3 or prednisolone by intraperitoneal injection. Inflammatory BEAS-2B cells(human tracheal epithelial cells) treated with ginsenoside Rg3 to investigate its effects on inflammatorycytokines and oxidative responses. Results: Ginsenoside Rg3 treatment significantly reduced eosinophil infiltration, oxidative responses, airway inflammation, and AHR in the lungs of asthmatic mice. Ginsenoside Rg3 reduced Th2 cytokineand chemokine levels in bronchoalveolar lavage fluids and lung. Inflammatory BEAS-2B cells treated withginsenoside Rg3 reduced the eotaxin and pro-inflammatory cytokine expressions, and monocyteadherence to BEAS-2B cells was significantly reduced as a result of decreased ICAM-1 expression. Furthermore, ginsenoside Rg3 reduced the expression of reactive oxygen species in inflammatory BEAS-2B cells. Conclusion: Ginsenoside Rg3 is a potential immunomodulator that can ameliorate pathological featuresof asthma by decreasing oxidative stress and inflammation

Antiproliferative and Antitumorigenic Activity of Toona sinensis Leaf Extracts in Lung Adenocarcinoma

        Chih-Jen Yang,Yu-Jung Huang,Cheng-Yuan Wang,Chuan-Sheng Wang,Pei-Hui Wang,Jen-Yu Hung,Tung-Heng Wang,Hseng-Kuang Hsu,Hurng-Wern Huang,S.P. Anand Kumar,Ming-Shyan Huang,Ching-Feng Weng 한국식품영양과학회 2010 Journal of medicinal food Vol.13 No.1

Toona sinensis is a traditional Chinese herb, and the extracts of T. sinensis leaf possess a variety of biological functions. This study attempted to test the antiproliferative effect of TSL-1 (a bioactive fraction of T. sinensis) in H441 cells (lung adenocarcinoma). The data showed that the antiproliferative effect of TSL-1 on H441 cells is prominent using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay. TSL-1-induced apoptosis was confirmed by cell morphology, sub-G1 peak accumulation, cleavage of poly(ADP)-ribose polymerase, and propidium iodide-annexin V double staining. Furthermore, decreased Bcl-2 accompanied by increased Bax (in western blotting) was found with TSL-1 treatment of H441 cells. TSL-1 treatment-induced G1 arrest was concurrent with the down-regulation of protein levels of cyclin D1 and cyclin-dependent kinase 4 in H441 cells. Peroral and intraperitoneal administrations of TSL-1 were performed to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy, and peroral administration of TSL-1 was also used to elucidate the therapeutic efficacy in the H441 cell xenograft model in vivo. The data revealed that TSL-1 treatment inhibited H441 tumor growth in both therapeutic and preventive experiments. Taken together, these results demonstrate that TSL-1 possesses the capability of preventing and alleviating lung cancer proliferation in vitro and in vivo with proven nephrological and hepatic safety and has the potential to be developed as an anti–lung cancer drug.
