In the absence of intensive tests on the cable-stayed bridges under non-uniform excitation, this study provides a practical and accurate approach to investigate the seismic response of cable-stayed bridges considering spatially varying earthquake inputs. The cable-stayed bridge model with a scale ratio of 1:120 was designed and tested on a newly-developed dual shake table system. Firstly, the modal test was conducted to evaluate the accuracy of the designed specimen. Secondly, both the same input cases and the different inputs cases were executed to study the wave passage effects on bridge specimen's dynamic response. Lastly, the effects of non-uniform excitation and site classification on the experimental bridge's seismic performancewere studied with test results of various soil condition cases. The test results showed that the bending of the girder was magnified, while the swing of the tower was subdued when the effect of wave propagation was considered. Moreover, compared with the same input cases, the different inputs cases reported a larger response to the extent of 80%. Regarding the effects of site conditions, it was concluded that the site of soft soil had more influence on the dynamic responses of such bridge structures than that of the firm soil site.

<P>UV-induced cell pigmentation represents an important mechanism against skin cancers. Sun-exposed skin secretes alpha-MSH, which induces the lineage-specific transcriptional factor MITF and activates melanogenesis in melanocytes. Here, we show that the autophagic tumor suppressor UVRAG plays an integral role in melanogenesis by interaction with the biogenesis of lysosome-related organelles complex 1 (BLOC-1). This interaction is required for BLOC-1 stability and for BLOC-1-mediated cargo sorting and delivery to melanosomes. Absence of UVRAG dispersed BLOC-1 distribution and activity, resulting in impaired melanogenesis in vitro and defective melanocyte development in zebrafish in vivo. Furthermore, our results establish UVRAG as an important effector for melanocytes' response to alpha-MSH signaling as a direct target of MITF and reveal the molecular basis underlying the association between oncogenic BRAF and compromised UV protection in melanoma.</P>

Functional Sb2WO6 samples were prepared by a solvothermal method. XRD and XPS spectroscopy wereused to demonstrate structures of the as-prepared Sb2WO6 samples. And the morphologies werecharacterized via SEM and TEM. Different morphologies of the Sb2WO6 samples can be convenientlyachieved by simply changing the pH value. The Sb2WO6microspheres were obtained when the pH = 2. Apossible formation process of Sb2WO6 microspheres was proposed. The Sb2WO6 microspheres have highphotocatalytic activity and stability for the degradation of Rhodamine B. Moreover, the wettability ofSb2WO6 microspheres was also investigated. Results suggest that Sb2WO6 surface has highsuperhydrophobicity.

This paper recounts a real-time hybrid simulation (RTHS) that employed a shake table coupled with an actuator to evaluate the seismic performance of a single-span girder bridge. The test specimen for this RTHS was a scaled single-span girder bridge, which was subjected to Loma Prieta excitation in the test. In the RTHS, the bridge specimen, which lacked mass on top of the bridge deck, was physically tested by a shake table and an actuator, whilst the mass on the bridge, as well as the pile foundation and the soil were modeled numerically. OpenSEES was used for numerical modeling and OpenFresco was used for the communication between the test system and numerical model. An adaptive time series (ATS) technique was employed to compensate for time delay in the RTHS. In this way, a novel bridge engineering RTHS application case composed of shake table and actuator control was presented. To validate the results of the RTHS, a shake table test (STT) of the bridge structure with full mass on the bridge deck was conducted correspondingly. Comparing the RTHS and STT results, it can be concluded that acceleration histories, bearing deformation histories, and strain histories of the selected points matched well. The application of RTHS to assess the seismic behavior of the single-span girder bridge was reasonably verified in this paper.

Hybrid simulation (HS) has attracted community attention in recent years as an efficient and effective experimental technique for structural performance evaluation in size-limited laboratories. Traditional hybrid simulations usually take deterministic properties for their numerical substructures therefore could not account for inherent uncertainties within the engineering structures to provide probabilistic performance assessment. Reliable structural performance evaluation, therefore, calls for stochastic hybrid simulation (SHS) to explicitly account for substructure uncertainties. The experimental design of SHS is explored in this study to account for uncertainties within analytical substructures. Both computational simulation and laboratory experiments are conducted to evaluate the pseudo-random Sobol sequence for the experimental design of SHS. Metamodeling through polynomial chaos expansion (PCE) is established from a computational simulation of a nonlinear singledegree-of-freedom (SDOF) structure to evaluate the influence of nonlinear behavior and ground motions uncertainties. A series of hybrid simulations are further conducted in the laboratory to validate the findings from computational analysis. It is shown that the Sobol sequence provides a good starting point for the experimental design of stochastic hybrid simulation. However, nonlinear structural behavior involving stiffness and strength degradation could significantly increase the number of hybrid simulations to acquire accurate statistical estimation for the structural response of interests. Compared with the statistical moments calculated directly from hybrid simulations in the laboratory, the meta-model through PCE gives more accurate estimation, therefore, providing a more effective way for uncertainty quantification.

This paper presents the corrosion-induced cracking performance of reinforced concrete in a chloride condition. The meso-scale structures of concrete specimens were studied according to the X-ray micro-computed tomography test, including the corrosion propagation, the accumulation and transportation of corrosion products, the defects and cracking behaviors of concrete cover. The experimental results show that the defects could provide a reasonable space for the accommodation of corrosion products, which could significantly increase the corrosion process and postpone the cracking performance. The propagation of the cracking path initiating from the corrosion area of the reinforcement to the concrete cover was also captured based on the experimental images, which can make contribution to the recognition of corrosion-induced cracking behavior of the concrete cover.

This paper introduces a base isolation system-tuned mass damper inerter (BIS-TMDI) hybrid system to the AP1000 nuclear power plant (NPP), which reduces seismic damage potential of the NPP structure. The effects of fluid-structure interaction (FSI) caused by the passive containment cooling system water storage tank (PCCWST) on NPP’s seismic performance are investigated. The FSI of water tank theoretical model is considered based on the Housner’s model, and a series of time history analyses are performed to prove the rationality of the proposed model. Three single-objective optimization strategies are employed to minimize the relative displacement variance and absolute acceleration variance of the upper structure, as well as the filtered energy index (FEI). Furthermore, a multi-objective optimization strategy considering all these three indexes is proposed to obtain optimal parameters of vibration control. The influence of vibration control strategies on the relative deformation and acceleration of the upper structure is explored with various water level ratios. The analytical results indicate that the proposed BIS-TMDI strategy has significantly reduced the NPP structure’s seismic response. The effectiveness of the vibration control strategy is influenced by the water level ratio, emphasizing the significance of designing an appropriate water level ratio to reduce NPP structure’s seismic response.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>The zinc finger protein CTCF has been invoked in establishing boundaries between genes, thereby controlling spatial and temporal enhancer activities. However, there is limited genetic evidence to support the concept that these boundaries restrict the search space of enhancers. We have addressed this question in the casein locus containing five mammary and two non-mammary genes under the control of at least seven putative enhancers. We have identified two CTCF binding sites flanking the locus and two associated with a super-enhancer. Individual deletion of these sites from the mouse genome did not alter expression of any of the genes. However, deletion of the border CTCF site separating the <I>Csn1s1</I> mammary enhancer from neighboring genes resulted in the activation of <I>Sult1d1</I> at a distance of more than 95 kb but not the more proximal and silent <I>Sult1e1</I> gene. Loss of this CTCF site led to <I>de novo</I> interactions between the <I>Sult1d1</I> promoter and several enhancers in the casein locus. Our study demonstrates that only one out of the four CTCF sites in the casein locus had a measurable <I>in vivo</I> activity. Studies on additional loci are needed to determine the biological role of CTCF sites associated with enhancers.</P>
