Rethinking Traditional American Values in Maxine Hong Kingston"s Chinese American Contexts

Traditional American values have been challenged in a global context, a context in which the conceptualization of a nation as a solitary, self-sufficient, homogenous unit is continuously disturbed by the transaction of economic, technological and cultural elements. Immigration and emigration are age-old praxes, which play important roles in the transaction of cultures. The study of immigrant societies and their interactions with mainstream cultures can provide interesting perspectives with which we can examine the nature of both parties. This paper studies traditional American values, especially the idea of individualism, in the eyes of Maxine Hong Kingston"s Chinese American characters. It covers Kingston"s first three books, The Woman Warrior: Memoirs of a Girlhood Among Ghosts, China Men, and Tripmaster Monkey: His Fake Book. It attempts to explore how Kingston"s heroines and heroes deal with the conflict between a Chinese cultural heritage that stresses community and an American society that stresses the individual. The paper explains that the reconciliation strategy is a dialogic one. Kingston"s heroines and heroes do not forsake their Chinese cultures, but draw strength from their ethnic cultural heritage to inscribe new values into their American reality, which thus hybridizes the mainstream cultures. Traditional American values, therefore, undergo a modification process in Kingston"s books when her characters instill new values into old ideas.

This paper demonstrates a security of speaker recognition system using ANN-GDA as training model. Speaker Recognition (SP) is the use of a machine to recognize a person from a spoken phrase. These systems can operate in two modes: to identify a particular person or to verify a person’ claimed identity. Speech processing and the basic components of automatic, In Text-Independent Speaker Recognition (TI-SP), there is no constraint on the text during enrollment and perform a recognition system does not know text spoken by person. Test utterances can be completely different from enrollment utterances. In this paper, we study the applicability of Artificial Neural Network (ANNs), the technique Gradient descent with adaptive lr back-propagation perform a training of the network can be envisaged as the minimization of an error function En as core classifiers for Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC). The Artificial Neural Network show better performance for speech and need less training data [1] and experiment result shows that the ANN model achieved highest accuracy.
The Efficiency of Telecenters in Social Sustainability Context: A Cambodia Case Study

Telecenter is the most popular application of ICT4D that connects the rural and poor community to the digital world. However, in practice it meets failure more than success due to several factors including the mismatch in design and management, especially, the lack of monitoring on the progress of the project. This paper intends to contribute in telecenter research in the field of performance evaluation by establishing an assessment method from the perspective of social sustainability. Social sustainability, one of the driving forces of telecenter sustainability, can be realized when telecenter is be able to deliver community acceptance content to majority of the local population. In addition to content design, telecenters have to be efficient in their operation by minimizing the resource while maximizing the outcome. Following formative assessment approach focusing on monitoring the progress or outcome (efficiency) of the project, and within the objective of finding a set of efficient telecenters and elements contributing to the performance improvement,this study employs Data Envelopment Analysis to periodically evaluate the operation of 20 telecenters of iREACH telecenter network.

The main cause of global warming is carbon dioxide generated from the use of fossil fuels, and active research on the reduction of carbon is in progress to slow down the increasing global warming. Wind turbines generate electricity from kinetic energy of wind and are considered as representative for an energy source that helps to reduce carbon emission. Since the kinetic energy of wind is proportional to the cube of the wind speed, the intensity of wind affects wind farm construction validity the most. Therefore, to organize a wind farm, validity analysis should be conducted first through measurement of the wind resources. To facilitate the approval and permission and reduce installation cost, measuring sensors should be installed at locations below the actual wind turbine hub. Wind conditions change in shape with air density, and air density is most affected by the variables terrain and surface type. So the magnitude of wind speed depends on the ground altitude. If wind conditions are measured at a location below the wind turbine hub, the wind speed has to be extrapolated to the hub height. This correction of wind speed according to height is done with the Deacon equation used in the statistical analysis of previously observed data. In this study, the optimal Deacon equation parameter was obtained through the analysis of the correction of the wind speed error with the Deacon equation based on the characteristics of terrain.

Current wind turbine units that are used primarily 3Blade type devices or large-scale wind-term capacity of 2㎿ of 60m~90m Blade diameter is applied. This is not the best suitable design with the designing condition for the special quality of wind condition in the South-West Coastal Areas of Korea where the wind speed frequency of average wind speed and over 10㎧ high wind velocity is fairly low. For this matter, in this dissertation, the expecting generation amount of electric power is measured excluding a mechanical moment, considering wind power energy traveling to the Blade when 60m~120m blade is applied, based on 2㎿ wind generator. Also, we would like to propose the Blade diameter which is fitted by wind condition of South-West Coastal Areas of Korea.

There has been a continuous increase in the utilization and utility value of renewable energy such as wind power generation in modern society. Wind condition is the absolute variable to the energy volume in the case of a wind power generation system. For this reason, wind power generators have already been installed in areas where wind velocity is high and the possibility of danger is very low. In other words, instability is likely if the wind velocity in an area is high and where a wind power generation system can be built. On the contrary, low wind velocity is possible in an area with high stability. Therefore, the design and manufacture of a wind power generation system should be carried out in a more complicated topography in order to secure a bigger market. This study examines and suggest how topography affects wind shear by analyzing the measured data in order to predict wind power generation more reliably.
