        In Situ Synthesis of Ti3+ Self-Doped TiO2/N-Doped Carbon Nanocomposites and its Visible Light Photocatalytic Performance

        Ti3+ self-doped TiO2 (TiO2-x)/N-doped carbon nanostructure composites were prepared via a facile one-step hydrothermal method to optimize the use of visible light and reduce recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes. The composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The amounts of carbon and nitrogen sources affect the morphology and photocatalytic performance. At low amounts of the sources, the Ndoped carbon nanostructure is an amorphous film and is well-combined with TiO2-x nanoparticles through surface carbon–oxygen groups. At high amounts of the sources, N-doped carbon quantum dots (NCQDs) were obtained, and carbon atoms could substitute for oxygen atoms in the TiO2 lattice to form Ti–C structures, which are responsible for the high photocatalytic activity under visible light illumination. Transient photocurrent response and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results indicate that the amorphous hybrid film becomes a trap for electrons and that NCQDs can accelerate electron transfer. The improved visible light photocatalytic property for the TiO2-x/NCQDs composite can be attributed to the enhancement of light absorption and inhibition of the photogenerated electron–hole recombination of anchored NCQDs.

        Response of Water Tetramer to Intense Femtosecond Laser Pulses

        We theoretically study the dynamics of water tetramer in intense femtosecond laser pulses with differentfrequencies. The simulations are carried out by incorporating the molecular dynamics method non-adiabaticallyinto the time-dependent local-density approximation (TDLDA-MD). Three typical scenarios of watertetramer including the normal vibration with enlarged OH bonds, free OH bonds breaking and the pureCoulomb explosion are presented by investigating the electronic and ionic dynamics. The result indicatesthat the ionization is enhanced and the corresponding fragmentation effect as well as the damping of thedipole moment are found more notably when increasing the laser frequency especially when the frequencyfalls in the resonant region of the absorption spectra. The study of the level depletion reveals that theratio of the emission amount from different levels can be controlled by changing the laser frequencyreferring to the Keldysh parameter.

        Uniform Side Illumination Generated from LEDs Arranged by an Annealing Algorithm

        Given a cubic space, it is easy to uniformly illuminate the floor with light sources placed on top. However, little has been reported about uniform illumination on walls with the same configuration of light sources. Here we present a luminaire consisting of nine light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with perfect Lambertian distribution, placed on the top as a 3 × 3 rectangular LED array. The distances between LEDs and tilt angles of each individual LED are adjustable and optimized by an annealing algorithm. After optimization, the array produces a rectangular illumination pattern on one wall with a uniformity of about 89%. Analysis shows that the tilt angles of individual LEDs are key parameters for uniform side illumination. In a scenario that is more practical, the tilt angles of all the LEDs are set to be the same, only decreasing the uniformity to 83%.

        A novel scheme to acquire enhanced up-conversion emissions of Ho3+ and Yb3+ co-doped Sc2O3

        A detailed investigation about the effect of Sc2O3: 1 mol%Ho3+/5 mol%Yb3+ co-doped with Ce4+ ions prepared by sol-gel methods was performed systematically. Under the excitation of 980 nm laser diode, both green emission (553 nm, 5F4/5S2→5I8) and red emission (672 nm, 5F5→5I8) were both observed in the emission spectra of the samples, which were found to be two-photon process and sensitized by Yb3+ ions. With the increasing of Ce4+ ions, the up-conversion green emission intensity are increased by 6.52, 8.69, 10.85, 13.92 and 16.66 fold, corresponding to the Ce4+ ions concentrations from 5 mol% to 13 mol%, respectively. The number of photons are necessary to populate the upper emitting state decreases to 2 and the infrared absorption coefficient is reduced, when the Ce4+ ions concentration increase to 13 mol%. Ce4+ ions play an important role in tailoring the local crystal field around Ho3+ ions, lowering the highest phonon cut-off energy of matrix and reducing the infrared absorption coefficient, thus hindering the non-radiative processes, which contribute to the increased emission intensity. The excellent enhancement makes it a promising multifunctional optical luminescence material.

      • Vibration analysis of train-bridge system with a damaged pier by flotilla collision and running safety of high-speed train

        The dynamic responses of a pier-pile-soil system subjected to a barge/flotilla collision are analyzed. A coupled highspeed train and bridge system with a damaged pier after barge/flotilla collision is established by taking the additional unevenness of the track induced by the damaged pier as the self-excitation of the system. The whole process of a CRH2 high-speed train running on the 6×32 m simply-supported PC (prestressed concrete) box-girder bridge with a damaged pier is simulated as a case study. The results show that the lateral displacements and accelerations of the bridge with a damaged pier are much greater than the ones before the collision. The running safety indices of the train increase with the train speed as well as with the number of barges in the flotilla. In flotilla collision, the lateral wheel/rail forces of the train exceed the allowable values at a certain speed, which influences the running safety of the trains.

        Fire Behaviors of Multilayer Latex Foam Coated by Thin Surface Fabric under Bottom Ventilation Conditions

        The latex mattress is usually accompanied by fire risk due to its coating material and multi-layer structure. The fire behaviors of multi-layer (with a total thickness of 5 cm) latex foam coated with different fabric layer under bottom ventilation conditions were investigated experimentally. Experimental results showed that fabric coated on the surface of the multi-layer sample could significantly affect the fire behaviors. The combustion duration and peak mass loss rate of single layer sample were obtained 30% shorter and 25% larger than that of the coated samples, respectively. The effects of blending coated from the latex foam surface on the fire behaviors were found larger than those from the cotton coated sample. The total combustion duration and average fuel regression rate of cotton coated samples reduced by 34%, 43.2% when compared to those of the blending coated samples, respectively. With the increase of the number of latex foam layers, the fuel regression rate in the depth direction of the sample increases.
