We report on a surface property of bulk ZnO crystals and an optical method to evaluate it. Bulk ZnO crystals have a damagedsurface layer due to chemomechanical polishing. We prepared the ZnO crystals by etching, and evaluated the improvement of thesurface by high-resolution X-ray diraction (XRD) and photoluminescence (PL). In PL measurements, the relative intensity of therst order longitudinal optical phonon replica of free exciton (FX-1LO) to second order process (FX-2LO) was compared. Therelative intensity becomes weak with increasing etched depth and nally saturates at the etched depth of 5l m. This result agrees wellwith XRD results.
The Medicinal Mushroom, Grifola gargal, Ameliorates Allergic Bronchial Asthma

Grifola gargal Singer, a medicinal mushroom, has been found to be effective for the prevention and treatment of various chronic inflammatory diseases. However, the effects of G. gargal on allergic diseases are unknown. The present study investigated the effect of G. gargal extract on allergic bronchial asthma. Asthma was induced in mice by ovalbumin sensitization and inhalation. The grade of asthma was compared between mice fed with chow containing G. gargal extract and mice given standard chow. The human mast cell and eosinophilic cell lines were used for in vitro studies. G. gargal extract significantly reduced airway hyperresponsiveness, lung eosinophilic infiltration, lung interleukin (IL)-13 expression, and plasma IgE level and significantly increased IL-10 plasma levels compared to untreated control mice. Spleen regulatory T cells were significantly increased in mice treated with the G. gargal extract compared with untreated control mice. G. gargal extract significantly suppressed expression of cytokines in mast cells and eosinophils compared with control cells. Overall, these observations show that G. gargal extract augments the lung population of regulatory T cells and ameliorates allergic inflammation and airway hyperresponsiveness in mice with allergic bronchial asthma, suggesting the potential therapeutic benefit of G. gargal extract in allergic diseases.
Structural characterization of Ga-doped Mg0 .1Zn0.9O layers grown on ZnO/α- Al2O3 templates by P-MBE

In this study, structural properties of epitaxial Ga-doped Mg0:1Zn0:9O layers grown on ZnO/a-Al2O3 templates by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy have been investigated by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and highresolution X-ray diraction (HRXRD). From analysis of the diraction pattern, the monocrystallinity of the Mg0:1Zn0:9O layerwith hexagonal structure is conrmed. The orientation relationship between Mg0:1Zn0:9O and the template is determined as(0001ÞMg 0:1Zn0:9Ok(0001)ZnOk(0001ÞAl2O3 and [2.1.10.Mg 0:1Zn0:9O k[2.1.10]ZnOk[1.100.Al2O3. The density of dislocations near the topsurface layers measured by plan-view TEM is about 3.61010 cm. 2, one order of magnitude higher than the value obtained for ZnOlayers ona-Al2O3 with a MgO buer. Cross-sectional observation revealed that the majority of threading dislocations are in the[001] line direction, i.e. they lie along the surface normal and consist of edge, screw, and mixed dislocations. Cross- sectional TEMand X-ray rocking curve experiments reveal that most of dislocations are edge dislocations. The interface of Mg0:1Zn0:9O and ZnOlayers and the eect of excess Ga-doping in these layers have been also studied.
