Interfacial charge transfer in ZnTe/ZnO nano arrayed heterostructures and their improved photoelectronic properties

        Ilanchezhiyan, P.,Mohan Kumar, G.,Xiao, Fu,Madhankumar, A.,Siva, C.,Yuldashev, Shavkat U.,Cho, H.D.,Kang, T.W. North-Holland 2018 Solar Energy Materials and Solar Cells Vol. No.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The demand for low-cost high efficient photoelectronic devices tends to drive the present need for investigations on advanced multi-functional semiconducting nanostructures. In this regard, the physico-chemical traits of sonochemically processed ZnTe nanostructures and hydrothermally grown ZnO nanostructures were studied using Raman, UV–vis absorbance, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and high resolution microscopic tools. The p-n ZnTe/ZnO heterojunctions were then fabricated via spin casting a colloidal ZnTe suspension on periodically aligned ZnO nanowires and investigated for their photoelectronic functionalities. The current-voltage (I-V) characteristics revealed an obvious rectifying behaviour with the forward current and rectification ratio getting improved on lowering the threshold voltages. The series resistance of the diodes were additionally studied using the dV/dlnI derivate plots. The stability of the diodes were also affirmed using their time-dependent photoresponse characteristics, which actually suggested the improved and effective separation of photo generated electron hole pairs across the interface. Finally, the ZnTe/ZnO heterojunction behaviour was assimilated using the electrochemical impedance spectroscopic (EIS) results that were studied individually for ZnTe and ZnO nanostructures and collectively across ZnTe/ZnO heterostructure.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> ZnTe integrated ZnO nanowire diodes revealed excellent rectifying behaviour/rectification ratio. </LI> <LI> Series resistance of diodes were studied using dV/dlnI derivate plots. </LI> <LI> Stability of devices were evidenced through their photoresponse characteristics. </LI> <LI> Electrochemical data revealed improved interfacial charge transfer along the heterostructure. </LI> </UL> </P>

      • Photoswitching and photocatalytic functions of SnxCu1−xS nanostructures

        Ilanchezhiyan, P.,Kumar, G. Mohan,Siva, C.,Venkatasubbu, G. Devanand,Kang, T.W.,Kim, D.Y. Elsevier 2019 APPLIED SURFACE SCIENCE - Vol.489 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Ultra-thin semiconducting nanostructures are garnering strategic importance in energy and environment remediation applications. In this regard, SnxCu1−xS nanostructures were processed through an eco-friendly chemical route and investigated in detail for photoswitching and photocatalytic functions. X-ray diffraction, FT-IR, Raman, UV–vis absorbance and high-resolution microscopic tools were initially used to examine the physico-chemical traits of SnxCu1−xS nanostructures. Ambiguous evidence for the substitution of Sn ions in place of Cu ions was attained through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The photocatalytic performance of SnxCu1−xS systems was investigated through effective remediation of organic dye molecules under visible light. Scavenger based photocatalytic experiments were additionally carried out to infer the degradation mechanism. Type II <I>p-n</I> SnxCu1−xS/In2S3 heterojunction diodes were also demonstrated for the first time with improved electrical conductivity and photoelectrical performances. The rectification ratio, forward current values and photo switching capabilities of these diodes were noted to improve in the Current vs. Voltage (I-V) and Current vs. Time (I-T) curves as a function of Sn composition and applied bias potential. The excellent photo switching stability augments the photo generated carriers to be effectively separated along the p-n junctions. The enhanced photoelectronic and photocatalytic functionalities in SnxCu1−xS has finally been reasoned to the improved charge transfer kinetics in the respective architectures, resulting from the effective Sn interaction in hexagonal host lattice.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> SnxCu1−xS nanostructures were fabricated by hydrothermal route. </LI> <LI> The nanostructures exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity under visible light. </LI> <LI> Sn interaction in hexagonal host lattice promoted their photocatalytic performance. </LI> <LI> p-SnxCu1−xS/n-In2S3 diodes demonstrated improved photoswitching performance. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

Determination of surface properties and Gutmann’s Lewis acidity–basicity parameters of thiourea and melamine polymerized graphitic carbon nitride sheets by inverse gas chromatography

        Sreekanth, T.V.M.,Basivi, Praveen Kumar,Nagajyothi, P.C.,Dillip, G.R.,Shim, J.,Ko, T.J.,Yoo, K. Elsevier 2018 Journal of chromatography Vol.1580 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Melamine and thiourea-derived graphitic carbon nitrides (M-GCN/T-GCN) were synthesized and characterized. The surface properties were investigated using inverse gas chromatography (IGC) and compared. Net retention volumes of M-GCN and T-GCN were measured with <I>n</I>-alkanes (C5–C10) and polar probes. The London dispersive surface free energies ( γ s d ), calculated using Schultz and Dorris–Gray methods, decreased linearly with increasing temperature. The specific components of the enthalpy and entropy of adsorption for the polar probes were obtained using the Schultz, Dong, and Sawyer–Brookman methods. The Gutmann’s Lewis acid–base parameters, <I>Ka </I> and <I>Kb </I>, were determined using the surface free energy ( Δ G a S ) via these methods. The surface character ‘<I>S’</I> values (<I>Kb </I>/<I>Ka </I>) of M-GCN and T-GCN using the respective methods are 4.04, 3.78, and 5.08 and 4.11, 5.27, and 2.86. Hence, the surfaces contain more basic than acidic sites and could interact strongly with acidic media. Thus, IGC elucidates the surface charges of the GCN matrix resulting from surface chemical modification.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Graphitic carbon nitride was synthesized using two precursors, melamine and thiourea. </LI> <LI> Physicochemical properties were confirmed by XRD, XPS and BET. </LI> <LI> Inverse gas chromatography was employed to understand surface free energy of GCN. </LI> <LI> The London dispersive parameters were determined by Schultz/Dorris–Gray methods. </LI> <LI> The Lewis acid–base parameters, showing the more basic character of GCN. </LI> </UL> </P>

      • Ultrasonic-assisted synthesis of ZnTe nanostructures and their structural, electrochemical and photoelectrical properties

        Ilanchezhiyan, P.,Mohan Kumar, G.,Xiao, Fu,Poongothai, S.,Madhan Kumar, A.,Siva, C.,Yuldashev, Sh.U.,Lee, D.J.,Kwon, Y.H.,Kang, T.W. Elsevier 2017 Ultrasonics sonochemistry Vol.39 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Colloidal zinc telluride (ZnTe) nanostructures were successfully processed through a simple and facile ultrasonic (sonochemical) treatment for photoelectronic applications. The particle-like morphological features, phase and nature of valence state of various metal ions existing in ZnTe were examined using electron and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic tools. Raman spectroscopic measurements revealed the dominance of exciton-phonon coupling and occurrence of TeO2 traces in ZnTe through the corresponding vibrations. Optical bandgap of the ZnTe suspension was estimated to be around 2.15eV, authenticating the direct allowed transitions. The <I>p</I>-type electrical conductivity and charge carrier density of ZnTe were additionally estimated from the Bode, Nyquist and Mott-Schottky type impedance plots. The photoelectrical properties of ZnTe were investigated by fabricating <I>p</I>-ZnTe/<I>n</I>-Si heterostructures and studying their corresponding current-voltage characteristics under dark and white light illumination. The diodes revealed excellent rectifying behaviour with significant increase in reverse current under illumination. The stability of the devices were also affirmed through the time-dependent photoresponse characteristics, which actually suggested the improved and effective separation of photo generated electron hole pairs across the integrated heterojunctions. The obtained results also augment the potential of sonochemically processed ZnTe for application in photo detection and sensor related functions.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Nanostructured ZnTe were ultrasonically processed for photoelectronics. </LI> <LI> Raman, XPS and electron microscopic tools affirmed their physico-chemical traits. </LI> <LI> Electrical properties were studied using Nyquist and Mott-Schottky plots. </LI> <LI> <I>I</I>-<I>V</I> studies augment the improved photo response in p-ZnTe/n-Si heterojunctions. </LI> </UL> </P>

Botanicals Mediated Reproductive Enhancement in Mulberry Silkworm (Bombyx mori L.)

        Kumar P. M. Pratheesh,Bhargava S.K.,Prabhakar C.J.,Kamble C.K. Korean Society of Sericultural Science 2007 International Journal of Industrial Entomology Vol.14 No.1

Ethanol extract of 20 botanicals in 3 concentrations i.e., 2.5%, 5% and 10% were evaluated for their efficacy to improve reproductive performance of mulberry silkworm (Bombyx mod L.) through feeding botanical enriched mulberry leaves during $2^{nd}$ day of $4^{th}$ age as well as $1^{st}$ and $3^{rd}$ day of $5^{th}$ age larvae. The preliminary screening was done by ranking the botanicals based on influence in most important reproductive contributing parameters such as single cocoon weight, effective rate of rearing, pupation rate, fecundity and recovery of eggs/kg cocoon. Five botanicals viz., Asparagus recemosus, Achyranthes aspera, Tribulus terrestris, Withania somnifera, Parthenium histerophorus ranked first were further evaluated at 8% 5% and 3% concentrations to confirm their effectiveness and standardize effective concentration. Among the rearing parameters, mature larval weight, shell ratio and number of cocoons/kg were not significantly influenced by the treatments. However, reproductive parameters such as effective rate of rearing (wt), pupation rate (%), fecundity (No.) and egg recovery (g)/kg cocoon were significantly (P<0.05) influenced by the botanicals. Higher fecundity and egg recovery were obtained on treatment with Withania somnifera irrespective of concentrations. However at 5% concentration, pupation rate, fecundity as well as egg recovery were found significantly higher than that of other concentrations, confirming its effectiveness for improving reproductive efficiency.

Characterization of Microstructure of HAZs in As-Welded and Service Condition of P91 Pipe Weldments

        C. Pandey,A. Giri,M. M. Mahapatra,P. Kumar 대한금속·재료학회 2017 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.23 No.1

Steels 9-12% Cr, having the high creep rupture strength are advocated for the modern low polluting thermal power plants. In the present investigation, the P91 pipe weldments have been characterized for microstructural responses in as-welded, post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) and ageing conditions. The PWHT of welded samples were carried out at 760 °C for time of 2 h and ageing at 760 °C for 720 h and 1440 h, respectively. The effect of time has been studied on precipitates size, distribution of precipitates and grain sizes present in various zones of P91 steel weldments. The impact toughness and hardness variation of heat affected zone (HAZ) have also been studied in as-welded condition as well as at different heat treatment condition. A significant change was observed in grain size and precipitates size after each heat treatment condition. The maximum impact toughness of HAZ was obtained after PWHT at 760 °C for 2 h. The main phase observed in weld fusion zone in as-welded, PWHT and ageing conditions were M23C6, MX, M7C3, Fe-rich M3C and M2C. The unwanted Z-phase (NbCrN) was also noticed in weld fusion zone after ageing of 1440 h.

      • Novel approach for the synthesis of nitrogen-doped titania with variable phase composition and enhanced production of hydrogen under solar irradiation

Reddy, P.A.K.,Reddy, P.V.L.,Kim, K.H.,Kumar, M.K.,Manvitha, C.,Shim, J.J. Korean Society of Industrial and Engineering Chemi 2017 Journal of industrial and engineering chemistry Vol.53 No.-

In order to maximize the photocatalytic production of hydrogen, it is desirable to develop an efficient photocatalyst with enhanced yield and visible sensitivity. To this end, we developed a novel method to synthesize nitrogen doped TiO2 with anatase/rutile/brookite mixed phases in aqueous urea solutions. The hydrogen production capacity of the nitrogen doped multiphase TiO2 (e.g., anatase (69%)/brookite (17%)/rutile (14%)), when assessed under solar light irradiation, was six times higher than that of commercial Degussa P25 and bare TiO2 catalysts. Such enhanced efficiency was ascribed to increased visible absorption along with effective electron-hole separation between the different crystalline phases.

Effect of Administration of Garlic Extract and PGF2α on Hormonal Changes and Recovery in Endometritis Cows

        Sarkar, P.,Kumar, H.,Rawat, M.,Varshney, V.P.,Goswami, T.K.,Yadav, M.C.,Srivastava, S.K. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2006 Animal Bioscience Vol.19 No.7

The efficacy of garlic extract and $PGF_2{\alpha}$ in the treatment of endometritis in cows was evaluated. A total of 26 parous cows affected with endometritis were randomly allocated into three groups. Group I (n = 10) animals were infused (IU) with 10 ml garlic extract mixed with 90 ml normal saline, three times at 12 h interval starting from the day of estrum, whereas the animals of Group II (n = 10) were treated with a single injection of $PGF_2{\alpha}$ (25 mg Lutalyse) on the $10^{th}$ to $12^{th}$ day after estrus, and group III (n = 6) remained as control. Cervico-vaginal mucus (CVM) was collected from each animal at pre- and post-treatment estrus and subjected to white side test, pH determination and total bacterial load. The clinical recovery of cows was assessed by negative white side test reaction, pH value and total bacterial count of CVM at subsequent estrus. The recovered animals were inseminated with frozen-thawed semen twice at 12 h intervals and pregnancy was confirmed at 45-60 days following insemination. A significant decline (p<0.05) in pH of CVM was observed in both the treatment groups at subsequent estrus. After treatment there was a significant (p<0.05) reduction in bacterial load, whereas, it was increased in control group. A total number of 65 isolates were identified in CVM samples comprising mostly of facultative anaerobic bacteria. Plasma $T_4$ and $T_3$ concentrations were increased in all the treated animals, whereas, a decline was observed in cortisol levels following treatment. The overall conception rate was 50% in treated groups as compared to nil pregnancy in the control.

Effect of microwave processing on structural, dielectric and ferroelectric properties of calcium-doped BaTiO3 ceramics

        Sonia,R.K. Patel,C. Prakash,P. Kumar 한양대학교 세라믹연구소 2011 Journal of Ceramic Processing Research Vol.12 No.6

Calcium-doped barium titanate, Ba(1−x)CaxTiO3 (where x = 0.02,0.04,0.06 & 0.08)/BCT1,BCT2, BCT3 & BCT4, ferroelectric ceramics were synthesized by a microwave processing technique. For the formation of a single perovskite phase with a dense grain morphology, microwave sintering temperature was optimized at 1100 oC for 1 h. SEM characterization of the microwave sintered BCT samples showed dense and homogeneous packing of sub-micrometer size grains. The BCT2 system showed the highest room temperature (RT) dielectric constant (εr). The dielectric property vs. temperature behavior revealed a diffuse phase transition nature. The occurrence of polarization vs. electric field (P-E) loops confirmed the ferroelectric nature of the microwave sintered BCT samples.
