      • The Exigency of Being Parrhèsiastic: On Truth-telling in Socratic Dialogue Groups with Survivors of Cancer

Jeanette Bresson Ladegaard Knox 강원대학교 인문과학연구소 2013 Journal of Humanities Therapy Vol.4 No.-

A philosophical dialogue about the existentially disruptive situation left by cancer can be constructive for life post cancer. In this article I suggest that a Foucauldian interpretation of parrhèsia is a valuable lens that can magnify the kind of dialogue that takes place among survivors of cancer participating in a Socratic Dialogue Group (SDG) as well as conceptualize a fundamental precondition underlying a good philosophical dialogue. After a brief account of the concept of parrhèsia, the article will identify its particular modalities within a SDG and analyze these by using illustrative examples taken from my research. Through these examples I study how parrhèsia can help articulate the relation between truth and subject and display the philosophical objective in a SDG and, finally, the article will show what parrhèsia presents in a setting of this nature both in terms of its potential and its problems.

        Staging and Performing Dialogue

Jeanette Bresson Ladegaard Kno 강원대학교 인문과학연구소 2015 Journal of Humanities Therapy Vol.6 No.2

A Socratic Dialogue Group (SDG) harbors human drama in the stories and reflections of its participants. Through the use of a theater metaphor, I theoretically expand the method and practical action of SDG, whereby a distinctive approach is developed that emphasizes the art and craftsmanship involved in facilitating Socratic dialogue. It also allows me to bring forth the particular dramatic circumstances of the participants and the communal effort of each individual player in the ensemble. The micro cosmos of SDG incarnates the living, moving world that theater represents. It connects the drama of an individual life to the larger-scale human stories of moral tragedies and the empowering resilience that we see depicted in great plays. In 2012-2013, I conducted three SDGs in connection with a research project involving seventeen rehabilitating cancer patients. In this article, I use these dialogues as a paradigmatic case to illustrate my theater metaphor.

      • Inclusive Growth and Innovation

        Georges Bresson,Jean-Michel Etienne,Pierre Mohnen 과학기술정책연구원 2015 STI Policy Review Vol.6 No.1

Based on the work of Anand et al. (2013) we measure inclusive income growth, which combines growth in gross domestic product (GDP) per capita and growth in the equity of the income distribution. Extending the work of Causa et al. (2014), we estimate a dynamic simultaneous structural equations model of GDP per capita and inclusive income on panel data for 63 countries over the 1990-2013 period. We estimate both equations in error correction form by difference GMM (generalized method of moments). Among the explanatory variables of the level and the distribution of GDP per capita we include R&D (research and development) expenditure per capita. In OECD countries we obtain a large positive effect of R&D on GDP. R&D is found to have a positive effect on the social mobility index but its impact on the income equity index at first decreases, then switches around to become slightly positive in the long run. In non- OECD countries, R&D is found to decrease inclusive income, mostly through a negative growth effect but also because of a slightly increasing income inequity effect.

The endoscopic transnasal approach to the lesions of the craniocervical junction: two case reports

Baraa Dabboucy,Wissem Lahiani,Damien Bresson,Nouman Aldahak 영남대학교 의과대학 2023 Yeungnam University Journal of Medicine Vol.40 No.1

The endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) to the craniovertebral junction (CVJ) has recently been considered a safer alternative and less invasive approach than the traditional transoral approach because the complications associated with the latter are avoided or minimized. Here, we present two challenging cases of CVJ pathologies. The first case involved os odontoideum associated with anterior displacement of the occipitocervical junction where the EEA was used, followed by C0-C1-C2 fusion using a posterior approach to decompress the CVJ, and was complicated by rhinorrhea and Candida albicans meningitis. The second case involved basilar invagination with syringomyelia previously treated using a posterior approach, where aggravation of neuropathic symptoms required combined treatment with EEA and occipitocervical fusion of C0-C2-C3-C4, with the postoperative course challenged by operative site infection requiring drainage with debridement and antibiotic therapy. The EEA is an alternative approach for accessing the CVJ in well-selected patients. Knowledge of EEA complications is crucial for the optimal care of patients.

Synthesis, conductivity, and vibrational spectroscopy of tetraphenylphosphonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide

        Haddad, Boumediene,Paolone, Annalisa,Villemin, Didier,Taqiyeddine, Moumene,Belarbi, El-habib,Bresson, Serge,Rahmouni, Mustapha,Dhumal, Nilesh R.,Kim, Hyung J.,Kiefer, Johannes Elsevier 2017 Journal of molecular structure Vol.1146 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The reaction of lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide with tetraphenylphosphonium bromide in water leads to the formation of tetraphenylphosphonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([PPh4 +][(CF3SO2)2N−]). The obtained compound was identified by means of 1H, 13C, 19F and 31P NMR spectroscopy. Although it has a structure similar to ionic liquids, it exhibits a melting point above 100 °C. Besides describing the synthesis, a detailed characterization of its conductivity and vibrational spectroscopic properties is presented. For the latter, FT-Raman and FTIR/ATR spectroscopies are used in the wavenumber range from 150 to 3500 cm−1 and from 600 to 3500 cm−1, respectively. Density functional theory calculations reveal a minor influence of the interionic interactions on the vibrational structure. Consequently, the computational vibrational spectra of the isolated ions show a good agreement with the experimental data. A detailed vibrational assignment is presented. Furthermore, the conductivity data indicate a solid-solid phase transition about 130 K below the melting point.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Conductivity data indicate a solid-solid phase transition. </LI> <LI> Interionic interactions play a minor role in the vibrational structure of PPh4 NTf2. </LI> <LI> Computational and experimental spectra agree well. </LI> </UL> </P>
