<P>Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine disorder and the criteria are specified by hyperandrogenism, oligomenorrhea or amenorrhea and polycystic ovary morphology. Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) has effects on oogenesis and follicle development. Several polymorphisms of FSH receptor (FSHR) are related to primary amenorrhea, hypoplastic ovary, and high serum levels of FSH. Thus, an increase in FSH level leads to follicle maturation and proliferation of granulosa cells. The aim of this study was to determine whether Ser680Asn and Ala307Thr polymorphisms of FSHR were associated with the clinical features of PCOS in a Korean population. PCOS patients (n=235) and control subjects (n=128) in the reproductive age were recruited from the Fertility Center of CHA General Hospital in Seoul, Korea. For Ser680Asn and Ala307Thr polymorphisms in FSHR, frequency of respective genotypes was measured and statistical analysis was performed. Haplotype analysis between Ser680Asn and Ala307Thr was also performed. We found that the Ser680Asn of FSHR is associated with PCOS (p=0.0195, OR=1.66). However, in case of Ala307Thr, the variant is negligible and is not associated with PCOS (p=0.6963, OR=1.08). In haplotype analysis, Ser680Asn and Ala307Thr polymorphisms are not related with PCOS. Consequently, the Ser680Asn polymorphism of FSHR might significantly affect PCOS patients, separately from the Ala307Thr polymorphism.</P>
Accumulation of Butyltin Compounds in Shellfish and Fish from Korean Coastal Areas

Butyltins (BTs) were measured in 2 species of shellfish and 16 species of fish collected along the Korean coast. Tributyltin (TBT) was detected in the mussels and oysters of sentinel organisms (20 to 940 ng Sn/g dry wt), indicating widespread contamination of TBT in the Korean coast. The elevated concentrations of TBT in the shellfish found in the sites near harbors or shipyards suggested that antifouling paints are probable major sources of butyltins in these areas. The TBT compound was detected in 12 out of 16 fish samples. The concentrations of TBT in fish muscles wee between 7 and 151 ng Sn/g dry wt, while the level in whole body of anchovy was very high (793 ng Sn/g dry wt). Exposure doses to Korean people via consumption of these marine products wee evaluated. The results suggested that the environmental levels of TBT were below the level of concern.
Occurrence of butyltin compounds in marine environment of Gwangyang Bay, Korea

Butyltin (BT) compounds were measured in seawater, sediment, sediment core, settling solids, and plankton from Gwangyang Bay in 2001, Tributyltin (TBT) was detected in seawater from 1 out of the 7 seawater sampling sites and in sediment from 18 out of the 35 sediment sampling sites. The highest concentration of TBT was found in the sediment from the site near Yeosu Harbor (53 ng Sn/g dry wt), acting as the point source for TBT The mean concentrations of TBT were in the order of plankton> settling solids> sediment. The degradation indexes ([DBT]+[MBT]/[TBT]) for the plankton were less than 1, indicating the possibility of recent inputs of TBT. The indexes for the sediment and settling solids ranged from 1.14 to 8.73. The composition of the BT compounds found in the settling solids was similar to that found in the sediment. The vertical profile of the total BT compounds in the sediment was characterized by an abrupt decline from the surface. However, no butyltin compounds appeared below a depth of 10 cm, corresponding to the 1980s. Accordingly, the current results demonstrated that the levels of all butyltin species in the environment of Gwangyang Bay were relatively lower than those in other polluted coastal areas. The vertical profile also suggested a fairly recent history for the down-core.

There are previous reports of the identification of radiopaque medications on abdominal X-rays or computed tomography (CT). We describe an interesting case of the incidental identification of a radiopaque medication on cervical spinal CT following cervical spinal surgery. A sixty seven-year-old male patient with Parkinson’s disease (PD) visited our emergency center with a C5-6 dislocation and fracture. Surgery was performed with open reduction and pedicle screw fixation through the posterior approach. No abnormal events occurred during the perioperative period. However, a radiopaque incidental foreign body in front of the C6 vertebrae was found on a cervical spinal CT and X-rays that were performed as routine examinations on postoperative day 3. After 6 hours, we performed gastrofibroscopy (GFS) but were unable to find anything. Therefore, we checked all of his medications related to the neck and check X-ray again. One enteric-coated pill he had taken exhibited strong radiodensity. Although our patient underwent an unnecessary GFS, every spinal surgeon should keep in mind that radiopaque pills can appear similar to spinal instruments on X-ray and CT. In addition, we should also know the associated dysphagia is a possible cause of the delayed passage of medicine in PD with or without cervical osteophytes.
Electrochemical Properties of HNO3 Pre-treated TiO2 Photoanode Based Dye-sensitized Solar Cell

TiO2 photoanode was prepared using nitric acid pre-treated TiO2 materials. We compare dispersion of TiO2 nanoparticles before and after nitric acid treatment and measured Ti oxidized state from XPS. Low charge transfer resistance was obtained in nitric acid treated sample than that of untreated sample. The dye-sensitized solar cell based on the nitric acid treatment had open-circuit voltage of 0.71 V, a short-circuit current of 15.2 mAcm(-2) and an energy conversion efficiency of 6.6% under light intensity of 100 mWcm(-2). About 14% increases in efficiency obtained when the TiO2 electrode was treated by nitric acid.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the applicability of non-woven fabric mats (NWFMs) for interrupting organic matters and nutrients from contaminated reservoir sediments and investigate the pore size of NWFMs on its blocking efficiency. In laboratory incubation experiments, environmental conditions (pH, electric conductivity, dissolved oxygen (DO), and oxidation reduction potential) and contaminant concentrations (T-N, NH<sub>4</sub>-N, NO<sub>2</sub>-N, NO<sub>3</sub>-N, T-P, and PO<sub>4</sub>-P) were monitored. DO in uncapped condition was exhausted within four days but the DO in NWFM capping was prolonged for more than 22 days. Lower concentration of COD was observed in the NWFMs capping than uncapped, indicating that the NWFMs were effective for interrupting organic matter release. T-N was mainly composed of NH<sub>4</sub>-N and NH4-N release was effectively blocked by NWFMs capping. NWFMs capping was effective for interrupting not soluble phosphorus but adsorbed phosphorus release. NWFMs with smaller pore size was effective for blocking the release of T-P and COD than NWFMs with larger pore size, but the influence of pore size on T-N was not significant. It can be concluded that NWFM can be successfully used for remediation of reservoir`s sediments with high amounts of organic matters and nutrients.
