Effect of Drag Stages Surface Roughness on the Compression Ratio of a TMDP

The rotor of a turbomolecular drag pump is generally made of an aluminum alloy. Its surface finish is affected by various processes that the rotor itself undergoes during the manufacturing phase. The impact of different surface finishes on the pumping performances of a turbomolecular pump has been mainly investigated by Sawada et al [1]. The present work aims to broaden the previous bibliographic study to the drag stages of a turbomolecular pump by testing the impact of different surface finishes on the compression ratio of the pump. Experimental tests have been made focusing on two processes: the corundum sandblasting and the glass microspheres shot-peening. Both the processes flatten and/or physically remove EDM melted spheres; in particular, blasted surfaces obtained by glass shot-peening are generally smoother than surfaces obtained by corundum sandblasting. In order to characterize the surface texture left by such processes, preliminary surface roughness measurements have been made on the drag rotor disks of several pumps. The experimental tests conducted on both sandblasted and shot-peened rotors confirms previous results obtained on the turbo stages by Sawada et al. [1], showing that the average roughness of the surface has an impact on the compression ratio of the pump; in particular, an increment in the surface roughness causes a corresponding increment in the compression ratio of the pump and vice versa. For the tested pumps, the higher surface roughness gives a factor of increment of about 2 on the measured hydrogen maximum compression ratio of the pump.

<P>We have analyzed the first 3.75 years of data from the Taiwanese American Occultation Survey (TAOS). TAOS monitors bright stars to search for occultations by Kuiper Belt objects (KBOs). This data set comprises 5 × 10<SUP>5</SUP> star hours of multi-telescope photometric data taken at 4 or 5 Hz. No events consistent with KBO occultations were found in this data set. We compute the number of events expected for the Kuiper Belt formation and evolution models of Pan & Sari, Kenyon & Bromley, Benavidez & Campo Bagatin, and Fraser. A comparison with the upper limits we derive from our data constrains the parameter space of these models. This is the first detailed comparison of models of the KBO size distribution with data from an occultation survey. Our results suggest that the KBO population is composed of objects with low internal strength and that planetary migration played a role in the shaping of the size distribution.</P>
Off‐axis self‐reference digital holography in the visible and far‐infrared region

Recent advances in digital holography in the far‐infrared region of the spectrum have demonstrated the potential use of digital holography in homeland security as a tool to observe hostile environments in which smoke, flames, and dust impair vision. However, to make this application practical, it is necessary to simplify the optical setup. Here, we show an off‐axis, self‐reference scheme that spills the reference beam out from the object beam itself and avoids the need for a complex interferometric arrangement. We demonstrate that this scheme allows the reconstruction of high‐quality holograms of objects captured under visible as well as far‐infrared light exposure. This could pave the way to the industrialization of holographic systems to enable users to see through fire. Moreover, the quantitative nature of the holographic signal is preserved. Thus, the reported results demonstrate the possibility to use this setup for optical metrology.
Party relevance and party survival in new democracies

We argue that the move to free and fair elections is only the first step in a democratic transition. With this change, competition moves into the legislative arena, where interests are defined not in terms of support or opposition to the old regime, but over competing visions of what government should do. Thus, examining legislative behavior and legislative outcomes helps us to understand the long-term political and policy trajectory of democratic transitions. Building on game-theoretic analysis of majority-rule decision-making, our hypothesis is that, after controlling for factors such as seat share, party survival depends on party relevance—the organization’s influence over legislative outcomes. Using legislative roll call data from Hungary, Poland, Russia and Ukraine, we show that relevance is a major influence on party survival, even after controlling for seat shares and other factors. The last section of the paper discusses the implications of these results for democracy assistance programs.
Gallbladder agenesis: A case report and brief review

Agenesis of the gallbladder and cystic duct represents one of the rarest anomalies of the biliary system, with a reported incidence of 0.007% to 0.027%. Almost half of the patients develop common duct stones and 23% of them manifest signs and symptoms that mimic biliary colic. We present the case of a woman presenting with symptoms of biliary colic. Based on the clinical findings and after abdominal ultrasonography, which showed hyperechoic material in the gallbladder fossa, a laparoscopic cholecystectomy was planned. Laparoscopy failed to reveal either gallbladder or cystic duct. The procedure was continued to further search for ectopic sites of gallbladder. A condition of gallbladder agenesis was hypothesized and the procedure was aborted without dissection of hepatic pedicle or conversion to laparotomy. Agenesis of gallbladder and cystic duct was confirmed via pos-operative magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography. We report our experience with regard to the challenges associated with the diagnosis and management, and a brief review of the literature of this rare pathology.

We compare and contrast the three different approaches to the optically thick adiabatic phase of Gamma-ray Burst(GRB) all the way to transparency. Special attention is given to the role of the rate equation in self-consistently solving the rate equation with the relativistic hydrodynamic equations. The works of Shemi and Piran [1], Piran, Shemi and Narayan [2], M´esz´aros, Laguna and Rees [3] and Ruffini, Salmonson, Wilson and Xue [4,5] are compared and contrasted. The roles of the baryonic loading in these three treatments are pointed out. The constraints on initial conditions for the fireball produced by an electro-magnetic black hole are obtained.

The 1990s agreements that created the International Space Station (ISS) described the effort as a partnership of equals, a joint venture between organizations that remained independent in terms of many procedures, norms, goals, and the assumptions underlying these factors. As a result, successful joint ISS operations required the participants, most notably the American and Russian space programs, to reconcile different procedures, norms, and training regimes, as well as the beliefs that underlie these practices. Drawing on a combination of operational experience, firsthand observation, and interviews, this paper focuses on how the two programs reduced conflict and engendered cooperation. It also uses the ISS experience to consider how future joint efforts can be designed to minimize conflict between international partners.
