The purpose of this study was to investigate physiological and subjective sweat responses of elderly and young males in hot and humid environments. Nine elderly and 11 young males participated in the following experimental conditions: WBGT 27℃ (Air temperature 30℃, and air humidity 70%RH) and WBGT 32℃ (35℃, 70%RH) with two activity levels (sitting on a chair for 60 min and walking on a treadmill for 60 min). The walking speeds were 4.0 km/hr for young males and 2.3 km/hr for elderly males. The results showed that 1) total sweating rate was 34.3% and 36.6% smaller for the elderly than for the young in WBGT 27℃ and 32℃, respectively (p<.05). Skin hydration at rest was less for the elderly than for the young in both WBGT 27℃ and 32-℃. The skin of the young males was quickly and evenly saturated throughout the whole body from the beginning in WBGT 32℃, whereas the elderly males’ skin was slowly and unevenly saturated. At rest, elderly males expressed greater humidity and sweat sensations in WBGT 27℃ than in WBGT 32℃ which was interpreted as perceptual confusions, while such perceptual confusions were not found during exercise in either WBGT 27℃ or WBGT 32℃. These results suggest that the elderly’s perspiration and other sweat responses in hot and humid environments were impaired psychologically as well as physiologically.

The present study aimed to investigate the behaviors and attitudes about heating and cooling energy saving and indoor clothing habits according to occupation and gender. 509 people participated in the questionnaire which consisted of 47 questions. The results showed that 1) people were more dissatisfied with summer indoor temperature (26~28℃) compared to winter indoor temperature (18~20℃) recommended by the Korean government to save airconditioning energy; 2) no gender difference was found in attitudes to the summer indoor temperature, whereas females expressed more experiences of being cold in the winter indoor temperature than males; 3) indoor workers wearing uniforms everyday preferred more conservative styles in their summer uniforms than free wear-workers; 4) people who expressed “I am comfortable with winter cold” showed a tendency of being more tolerable to the winter indoor temperature (18~20℃) and less dependent on supplementary heaters compared to those who expressed “I am sensitive to cold”. Similarly, people who expressed “I am comfortable to summer heat” were more tolerable to the summer indoor temperature and used supplementary coolers less often. The results suggest that governmental policies developed to save heating and cooling energy indoors needs to consider individuals’ thermal tolerance as well as occupation and gender.

This study`s goal was to obtain basic data about the functional gowns of health care providers. 828 health care providers, including 150 doctors, 224 dentists, 202 nurses, 61 physical therapists and 191 medical technicians, living in Seoul and Daejeon areas, participated in this survey. A questionnaire was created using 15 items about the current health care providers` gowns. 15 items were consisted of 3 parts; satisfaction rate and activity (part 1), preference the details of medical gown (part 2), and personal information (part 3). In this study, wearer activity was the main concern for them and the majority of respondents, regardless of their age and type of work, preferred the V neckline, short gown length (waist line), loose sleeves and anti-bacterial textiles. Only the doctors preferred the full sleeves, whereas, the others preferred short sleeves. The younger health care providers showed a slightly higher preference for the slim type gown, while the older providers preferred the straight type. In this study, most health care providers were not satisfied with their current gowns, except dentists. Physical therapist answered the highest score of dissatisfied for current wearing medical gown among the all health care professionals. The 20`s answered the highest score of dissatisfaction among the all generation.

This study was to investigate the thermal insulation of clothing ensembles, including padded jackets with two different filling types. Thermal insulation of the ensemble was measured using a thermal manikin in four conditions (10°C, 30% RH and 20°C, 50% RH with an air velocity of less than 0.15 m · s<sup>-1</sup> and 1.5 m · s<sup>-1</sup>). Ten males participated at 10°C and 30% RH with an air velocity of less than 0.15 m · s<sup>-1</sup> and 1.5 m · s<sup>-1</sup>. The results showed that the polyester ensemble was warmer than a goose down ensemble in 0.15 m · s<sup>-1</sup> conditions and the goose down ensemble had greater thermal insulation than the polyester ensemble at an air velocity of 1.5 m · s-1. Thermal insulation was reduced 5-7% when temperature decreased 10°C and reduced 40-50% when air velocity reached 1.5 m · s<sup>-1</sup> for both ensembles. Thermal insulation of the ensemble in human trials decreased more than a thermal manikin at 10°C, 30% RH with an air velocity of 1.5 m · s<sup>-1</sup>. Lower temperatures and human trials were effective in identifying the properties of the thermal insulation by filling types even though there were restrictions on the general application because of two types of a clothing ensemble.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate far-infrared clothing (FIR condition) with non-far-infrared clothing (Control condition) to assess the effects of FIR on thermo-physiological responses. Eight young healthy males (23.0±2.3 yr, 176.5±3.7 cm, and 69.0±4.3 kg) participated in this experimental trial, which consisted of a 20 min rest followed by a 40 min walk (4.0 km · hr<sup>-1</sup>) and a 20 min recovery at 20℃ with 50%RH. The results showed that finger skin blood flow and mean skin temperature were significantly higher for the FIR condition than the control during exercise and recovery (p<.001). Clothing microclimate temperature of the FIR condition was 0.5℃ higher on the back (p=.001) and 0.4℃ higher on the thigh (p=.015) during recovery. Clothing microclimate relative humidity of the FIR condition was 13% higher on the chest (p=.006) and 19% higher on the back (p<.001) during exercise than control. Subjects felt warmer and more comfortable in the FIR condition than in the control (p<.05). Perceived skin wettedness (%BSA) was less in the FIR condition than in the control (p=.001). These results indicate that ceramic-embedded clothing had significant effects on thermoregulatory responses for light activity in an indoor environment.
