Bond models in linear and nonlinear optics

<P>Atomic-scale descriptions of linear-optical properties such as reflection are nearly a century old, but surprisingly, analogous models describing nonlinear-optical (NLO) properties as the natural dynamic response of bond charges driven by an external field are a recent development. These bond-charge models have proven to be particularly useful in describing the relevant physics of second-, third-, and fourth-harmonic generation, identifying previously unrecognized contributions to NLO responses, and uncovering well-disguised correlations in tensor parameters determined phenomenologically from symmetry conditions. Current capabilities are discussed, and opportunities for improved understanding noted.</P>

<P>Spectroscopic ellipsometry is used to determine pseudodielectric function spectra 〈ϵ 〉 = 〈ϵ<SUB>1</SUB>〈 + i 〈ϵ<SUB>2</SUB>〈 of InAs<SUB>x</SUB> P<SUB>1–x </SUB> al-loy thin films from 1.5 to 6.0 eV at room temperature. The structures for the E<SUB>1</SUB>, E<SUB>1</SUB> + Δ<SUB>1</SUB>, E ′<SUB>0</SUB>, E<SUB>2</SUB>, and E ′<SUB>2</SUB> critical points (CPs) were observed in the data. We compare direct- and reciprocal-space methods of extracting CP energies E<SUB>g</SUB>. The direct-space values show less uncertainty, a result of how the two procedures use available information. Dielectric Functions of Cd1-xMgxTe Alloy Films by Spectroscopic Ellipsometry

We report spectroscopic ellipsometric (SE) measurements of the above-bandgap optical properties of Cd$_{1-x}$Mg$_x$Te ternary alloy films, for $x$ = 0.00, 0.23, 0.31, and 0.43, grown on GaAs substrates. Using chemical treatments to remove overlayers, we obtain the closest approximations to the bulk dielectric functions $\varepsilon$ of these materials to date. The present work updates our previous report [Appl. Phys. Lett. \textbf{71}, 249 (1997)], in which the data showed nonzero $\langle\varepsilon_2\rangle$ values below the fundamental absorption edge.
Reducing or eliminating noise in ellipsometric spectra

In the last several years, considerable progress has been made in reducing or eliminating noise in ellipsometric spectra, including the development of algorithms for eliminating endpoint-discontinuity artifacts, a reciprocal-space expression for quantifying the efectiveness of linear flters, and the corrected maximum-entropy (CME) approach for eliminating apodization and its associated errors. These lead to new capabilities, together with additional opportunities for extracting information from spectra. These results enhance the utility of ellipsometry for analyzing surfaces, interfaces, materials, and structures. Examples are provided.
