Soft Systems are Ubiquitous-Defenses are Rare: A Case for Contingent Outsourcing of Patch Management

Arnett Kirk P. Korea Association of Information Systems 2005 情報시스템硏究 Vol.14 No.3

Computer attacks on vulnerable software are ubiquitous. Today's attacks on client PCs can be used to create armies of zombie computers that are capable of wide reach attacks on high profile businesses and governments. The simple act of patching software vulnerabilities will certainly mitigate this problem, but patching has its own set of problems. Further, it is frequently the case that patches which are available to mitigate vulnerabilities are not being made on a timely basis and sometimes are not being made at all. One solution to the patch management dilemma is outsourcing. This paper notes that outsourcing is not a carte blanche decision that can be made based on dollars, but rather that a contingency decision matrix can provide guidance on outsourcing solutions for patch management and other security components as well. The matrix recognizes that IS staff expertise and employee security awareness are two important factors in the outsourcing decision.

Leveraging Cognitive Linguistic Approaches to Grammar Teaching with Multimedia Animations

Carlee Arnett,Ferran Suñer 서울대학교 인지과학연구소 2019 Journal of Cognitive Science Vol.20 No.3

The present paper reports on a study which aims to explore the potential of using multimedia animations to make grammar principles of cognitive linguistic explanations more transparent to learners. Fourty-nine students of German received instruction on the German passive voice. A first group (CA) worked with a cognitive linguistic explanation of the German passive by means of multimedia animations and performed tasks that aimed to foster the relevant conceptualization processes. Another group (TA) was presented with a form-based explanation of the German passive mainly focusing on the syntactic features. The results show that the CA group significantly outperformed the TA group, especially in the tasks where the passive was tested in larger discursive contexts and made use of the different types of passive sentences in a more appropriate way.

Re-examining market structures: Resource-Advantage theory and the market offering ecosystem perspective

        Dennis B. Arnett,Mayukh Dass,Kshitij Bhoumik 한국마케팅과학회 2021 마케팅과학연구 Vol.31 No.2

Understanding market structure is central to firms’ success. It helps organizations understand competition and in turn develop strategies to improve performance. The market structure literature is traditionally driven by three schools of thoughts, supply-side competition, demand-side competition, and target market-based competition. However, researchers are developing more intricate models of market structures, which are inspired by the ecosystem concept and are supported by network analysis techniques. In this article, we present new insights regarding market structures based on an ecosystem metaphor approach. In particular, we propose that a market structure can be classified using six ecosystem-based relationships (mutualism, commensalism, neutralism, amensalism, parasitism, and competition), which are based on how the sales of a market offering affects the sales of other offerings in the same ecosystem. Based on these relationships, we examine these relationships in detail and provide proposals for future research.

Export market expansion through indirect learning: evidence from Korean exporters

        오한모,Dennis B. Arnett,안상봉 한국무역학회 2016 Journal of Korea trade Vol.20 No.4

Purpose – A appreciable number of exporters have successfully developed their markets in foreign countries although they have little prior experience in those countries. Advocating that indirect learning plays a crucial role in explaining this phenomenon, the purpose of this paper is attempted to investigate whether and how learning indirectly from competitors and interfirm relationships enables exporters to successful expand their business into foreign markets. Design/methodology/approach – Drawing on the knowledge-based theory of the firm and the late-mover advantage theory, the authors developed an empirically testable model that explains and predicts the effects of indirect learning on the success of export market expansion. The model was tested using a complied archival data set in regard to exporters’ market expansion events and international accounting. The sampling frame was the events of Korean exporters’ market expansion. Findings – Empirical evidence shows that exporters’ indirect learning from domestic, local, global competitors and from interfirm relationships influence their success of market expansion. In addition, indirect learning from domestic rivals and from interfirm relationships has a more positive effect on the success of expansion into emerging markets than into developed markets. Research limitations/implications – Because the authors employed an event-study method, the limitations of this method can be applied to the present research. In addition, because of the empirical context, the results of the research may lack generalizability. The authors, however, provided an understanding how an exporter can succeed in a foreign market specifically when it has lack of direct experience in the market. Practical implications – The results of the current research suggested that an exporter should try to learn from local, domestic, and global rivals experienced in a foreign market in order to succeed in the market. In addition, exporters should be affiliated with business groups or partnerships because these affiliations can strengthen the information-sharing mechanisms. Moreover, an exporter should focus first on learning from local rivals and then domestic rivals in order to develop proper expansion strategies. Finally, an exporter should attempt to more actively learn from rivals and interfirm relationships when it targets an emerging market than a developed market. Originality/value – Prior studies have emphasized the effects of a firm’s direct learning on market development success. The authors, however, filled a knowledge gap of the impacts of learning in two aspects. First, the authors provided an understanding of the effects of indirect learning on market expansion success. Second, the authors demonstrated these effects in the context of export.

      • HLA–DPB1 and DPB2 are genetic loci for systemic sclerosis: A genome-wide association study in Koreans with replication in North Americans

        Zhou, Xiaodong,Lee, Jong Eun,Arnett, Frank C.,Xiong, Momiao,Park, Min Young,Yoo, Yeon Kyeong,Shin, Eun Soon,Reveille, John D.,Mayes, Maureen D.,Kim, Jin Hyun,Song, Ran,Choi, Ji Yong,Park, Ji Ah,Lee, Y Wiley Subscription Services, Inc., A Wiley Company 2009 Vol.60 No.12

<B>Objective</B><P>To identify systemic sclerosis (SSc) susceptibility loci via a genome-wide association study.</P><B>Methods</B><P>A genome-wide association study was performed in 137 patients with SSc and 564 controls from Korea using the Affymetrix Human SNP Array 5.0. After fine-mapping studies, the results were replicated in 1,107 SSc patients and 2,747 controls from a US Caucasian population.</P><B>Results</B><P>The single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (rs3128930, rs7763822, rs7764491, rs3117230, and rs3128965) of HLA–DPB1 and DPB2 on chromosome 6 formed a distinctive peak with log P values for association with SSc susceptibility (P = 8.16 × 10−13). Subtyping analysis of HLA–DPB1 showed that DPB1*1301 (P = 7.61 × 10−8) and DPB1*0901 (P = 2.55 × 10−5) were the subtypes most susceptible to SSc in Korean subjects. In US Caucasians, 2 pairs of SNPs, rs7763822/rs7764491 and rs3117230/rs3128965, showed strong association with SSc patients who had either circulating anti–DNA topoisomerase I (P = 7.58 × 10−17/4.84 × 10−16) or anticentromere autoantibodies (P = 1.12 × 10−3/3.2 × 10−5), respectively.</P><B>Conclusion</B><P>The results of our genome-wide association study in Korean subjects indicate that the region of HLA–DPB1 and DPB2 contains the loci most susceptible to SSc in a Korean population. The confirmatory studies in US Caucasians indicate that specific SNPs of HLA–DPB1 and/or DPB2 are strongly associated with US Caucasian patients with SSc who are positive for anti–DNA topoisomerase I or anticentromere autoantibodies.</P>
