Korea and the Middle East Turmoil: A Reassessment of South Korea. Middle East Relations
( Alon Levkowitz ) 한국국방연구원 2012 The Korean Journal of Defense Analysis Vol.24 No.2
The turmoil in the Middle East (Arab uprisings), which began in Tunisia and swept through Egypt, Syria and other parts of the Middle East, continues to destabilize regimes in the region. What are the implications of these new revolutionizing changes for the Middle East and for South Korean-Middle East economic, political, and military relations? The Middle East turmoil might have implications not only for South Korea but other nations as well. For example, if an uprising erupts in Saudi Arabia and oil prices soar higher, it will influence the global oil market. South Korea-Middle East relations have received less attention from the media and from researchers over the years than North Korea-Middle East relations, which focused mainly on the military trade and security cooperation between Pyongyang and the Middle Eastern states. This paper analyzes the changes in South Korea`s Middle East policy since its establishment until the present. The paper sheds new light on the implications that the Middle East turmoil has on South Korea-Middle East relations.
Acute myocarditis associated with anti-COVID-19 vaccination
Alon Nevet 대한백신학회 2021 Clinical and Experimental Vaccine Research Vol.10 No.2
Novel anti-coronavirus disease 2019 mRNA vaccines are rapidly implemented worldwide. Therefore, attention should be given to potentially life-threatening adverse reactions. We report on three young male patients, who developed acute myocarditis 2 days after receiving the second dose of the BNT162b2 vaccine. Primary acute myocarditis was not previously reported in association with vaccines that do not include adjuvants. A high index of suspicion should be maintained in order to diagnose and treat patients who develop auto-inflammatory vaccine-related complications in a timely manner. Further research is required in order to explore the significance of this phenomenon and its underlying molecular mechanism.
Use of ultra-low cost fitness trackers as clinical monitors in low resource emergency departments
Alon Dagan,Oren J Mechanic 대한응급의학회 2020 Clinical and Experimental Emergency Medicine Vol.7 No.3
In low resource hospitals, strained staffing ratios and lack of telemetry can put patients at risk for clinical deterioration and unexpected cardiac arrest. While traditional telemetry systems can provide real-time continuous vital signs, they are too expensive for widespread use in these settings. At the same time, developed countries such as the United States have been increasingly utilizing remote monitoring systems to shift patient care from hospital to home. While the context is dramatically different, the challenge of monitoring patients in otherwise unmonitored settings is the same. At-home monitoring solutions range from highly comprehensive and expensive systems to inexpensive fitness trackers. In the field of global health, the adoption of this technology has been somewhat limited. We believe that low cost fitness trackers present an opportunity to address the challenge of vital sign monitoring in resource-poor settings at a fraction of the cost of existing technical solutions.
Molecular Imaging of CXCL12 Promoter-driven HSV1-TK Reporter Gene Expression

The C-X-C motif chemokine 12 (CXCL12, SDF1a) and its receptor, CXCR4, play a fundamental role in several biological processes, including hematopoiesis, cardiogenesis, cancer progression, and stem cell migration. Noninvasive monitoring of CXCL12 is highly desirable for optimizing strategies that combine mobilization of therapeutic cells to combat cancer or to assist in cardiac tissue repair after myocardial infarction. Here, we report on an MRI reporter gene system for directly monitoring CXCL12 expression in vivo. Glioma cells and human adipose-derived stem cells (hADSC) were transduced with the herpes simplex virus type-1-thymidine kinase (HSV1- tk) reporter gene expressed under the CXCL12 promoter. HSV1-tk expression resulted in accumulation of the PET tracer [125I]FIAU in vitro and in vivo and induced cell death after ganciclovir treatment. Furthermore, the results show that conditional expression of the reporter gene can be induced by hypoxia in transduced cells. Transduced hADSC were incubated with the CEST MRI probe 5-methyl-5, 6- dihydrothymidine (5-MDHT) and transplanted into swine heart. Transplanted cells were clearly visible on Chemical Exchange Saturation Transfer (CEST) MRI using a 3T clinical scanner. Therefore, we conclude that it is possible to image CXCL12 expression with MRI in a large animal model, opening up a possible route to clinical translation.
Does Religious Freedom Affect Country Risk Assessment?
Ilan Alon,John Spitzer 서울대학교 국제학연구소 2003 Journal of International and Area Studies Vol.10 No.2
Investors and lenders, when evaluating the risks of a country, generally base their assessment on the political and social environment of a country. Accordingly, a number of studies examining the economic and political factors affecting country risk assessment have surfaced, but no known researches have studied the impact of religious freedom, which is an influential element in the political and social environment of a country, on international business. This study analyzes the relationship between religious freedom and the three measures of country risk: ICRG, Institutional Investor and Euromoney. Although the empirical results are mixed, this article maintains that religious freedom is likely to affect the international business environment.
Influence of an upstream transonic axial compressor stage on the performance of inter-stage duct
Lakshya Kumar,Dilipkumar B. Alone,A. M. Pradeep 대한기계학회 2023 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.37 No.5
In this investigation, an inter-stage duct (ISD) design is carried out for three lengths based on the guidelines available in the open literature. The performance of the design is analyzed considering a stand-alone ISD with uniform inlet velocity and the flow coming from an upstream transonic compressor stage (TCS). The computational analysis is carried out for a 20° sector geometry. Three turbulence models, namely, SST, k-ε, and Reynolds stress, are compared for loss predictions. The flow behavior of the individual ducts is observed to be free from separation and is uniform at the exit. However, the duct performance is severely affected due to the presence of the upstream TCS. This investigation sheds light on the importance of considering upstream conditions for ISD design.

It is sometimes said that Chinese culture is simultaneously the oldest and the youngest culture in the World: oldest because it has about 5000 years of history and youngest because of a history that often made radical changes in the cultural values possible, if not necessary. This article contains information that is useful to international business practitioners and academics interested in Chinese business by specifically focusing on the cultural trends that affect the young and educated population of Shanghai in today s China. This group is important as it consists of both the potential labor force and the target market for multinational companies, and is likely to form the present and future business leaders of China. The paper discusses the new hybridized form of Chinese culture that has emerged among the educated youth in Shanghai, one that embodies a unique combination of Eastern and Western cultural elements.
