The Crisis of the Bar Exam and Legal Education in Japan

Japanese new JD program has confounded not only law students, scholars and lawyers but also politicians and media. In this paper, I will briefly tracked the difference between Old and New bar exams with regard to the number of applicants they have attracted, in comparison to M.D. and Pharmacist programs. Some arguments on related but discursive topics will follow. As a traditional profession, lawyers’ status has been so prestigious and they are assured of high income. Therefore the bar exam, the main gate for being lawyers, have attracted the most talented students, at least it is supposed to be so even now. Recent decreased number of applicants for the new JD program seems to show that those students who are capable avoid going to law schools. Some local bar associations strongly opposed to the rapid increase of lawyers. However, it was repeatedly discussed that the more bar exam passers caused the less qualified legal professions. Characterization of Si Interface in FIS Structure by Photoreflectance Spectroscopy

SrBi2Ta2O9(SBT) thin lm grown on SiO2/Si by a pulsed laser deposition was evaluated by photore ectance spectroscopy (PRS) which is one of the non-destructive techniques to characterize an interface. The stress of a SiO2/Si interface of ferroelectric-insulator-semiconductor (FIS) structure has been evaluated by using this method. As a result, there is a tensile stress which is larger than that before deposition, and the stress becomes large according to increasing SBT thickness. Moreover, when ferroelectric thin lm is poled, the stress becomes small with increase of the voltage.

<P>Heat shock response is an adoptive response to proteotoxic stress, and a major heat shock transcription factor 1 (HSF1) has been believed to protect cells from cell death by inducing heat shock proteins (Hsps) that assist protein folding and prevent protein denaturation. However, it is revealed recently that HSF1 also promotes cell death of male germ cells. Here, we found a proapoptotic Tdag51 (T-cell death associated gene 51) gene as a direct target gene of HSF1. Heat shock and other stresses induced different levels of Hsps and Tdag51, which depend on cell types. Hsps bound directly to the N-terminal pleckstrin-homology like (PHL) domain of Tdag51, and suppressed death activity of the C-terminal proline/glutamine/histidine-rich domain. Tdag51, but not major Hsps, were induced in male germ cells exposed to high temperatures. Analysis of Tdag51-null testes showed that Tdag51 played substantial roles in promoting heat shock-induced cell death in vivo. These data suggest that cell fate on proteotoxic condition is determined at least by balance between Hsp and Tdag51 levels, which are differently regulated by HSF1.</P>

For precise control of tension and thickness in a tandem cold millinac celeration and deceleration conditions, we employ an onlin ear model in cluding the rolling speed as a time-varying parameter. It is demon strated in simulation results that nonlinear receding horizon control by realtime optimization achieves satisfactory performance for the nonlinear model.

At the Kyoto University Research Reactor Institute (KURRI), a clinical study of boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) using a neutron irradiation facility installed at the research nuclear reactor has been regularly performed since February 1990. As of November 2014, 510 clinical irradiations were carried out using the reactor-based system. The world’s first accelerator-based neutron irradiation system for BNCT clinical irradiation was completed at this institute in early 2009, and the clinical trial using this system was started in 2012. A shift of BCNT from special particle therapy to a general one is now in progress. To promote and support this shift, improvements to the irradiation system, as well as its preparation, and improvements in the physical engineering and the medical physics processes, such as dosimetry systems and quality assurance programs, must be considered. The recent advances in BNCT at KURRI are reported here with a focus on physical engineering and medical physics topics.
