Eucommiae Cortex(Eucommia Ulmoides Oliver) Modulates MUSCLE Atrophy In Aged Mice

Purpose: Although exercise is the only way to suppress sarcopenia, using it for treating sarcopenia in the elderly is very difficult. Sports supplements used for the purpose of maximizing the benefits of exercise may include drugs that directly modulate sarcopenia. Therefore, the intake of sports supple-ments can be expected to have a synergistic effect of strengthening muscles in combination with exer-cise. Methods: In this study, we attempted to find a candidate adjuvant that might have a synergistic effect in the treatment of sarcopenia. To test the effect of Eucommiae(Eucommia ulmoides Oliver) cortex extract, which is used in Korean herbal medicines, in the treatment of sarcopenia, mice were divided into 3 groups: a control group(CON), a sarcopenia model group (age-elicited group; AEG), and a group consisting of sarcopenia model mice being administered with Eucommiae cortex extract(ECTG). Results: We identified muscle loss in aged mice and applied this mouse model to evaluate the effi-cacy of sports supplements. Muscle loss was reduced as a result of treatment with Eucommiae cortex extract to aging mice. The expression of Caspase-3 was measured in the femur using specific an-tibodies. Muscle mass was analyzed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. In the AGE group, protein expression of Caspase-3 was increased; however, in the ECTG group, Caspase-3 expres-sion was significantly reduced. Conclusion: These findings suggested that Eucommiae cortex extract decreased muscle loss and muscle cell death by regulating Caspase-3.
A Floorprint-Based Defect Tolerance for Nano-Scale Application-Specific IC

<P>A floorprint-based yield modeling, assurance and optimization method for the defect tolerant NASIC system under broken nanowire (NW) defects has been proposed in a short version of this paper, and the proposed models and methods are further validated and demonstrated through extensive parametric simulations in this paper. A yield model for each defect tolerant NASIC technique is developed based on the nature of the defects of concern in a floorprint-based analysis, thereby establishing an adequate foundation to evaluate and optimize the manufacturing process and defect tolerance by providing a capability to take into account the effect of each individual defect tolerance technique or synergetic effect of various combinations of the techniques on the overall expected yield of the product. According to the simulation results given in this paper, the defect tolerant NASIC system with 15 row and column NWs, respectively, each with length = 0.000034 on horizontal and vertical core nanoarray in a nanotile can achieve a yield higher than 99.8%. Ultimately, intelligent exploitation of the proposed yield modeling and simulation methods will make possible to realize a reliable NASIC-based computing system.</P>

<P>This prospective study surveyed the prevalence of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) in Korean patients with coronary arterial disease (CAD) or cerebrovascular disorder (CVD). From March 2010, 576 hospitalized patients in cardiovascular or stroke center were enrolled as the study group. Ankle-brachial index (ABI) was measured and the cut-off point for diagnosing PAD was ≤ 0.9 at rest. A total of 424 hospitalized patients in the Department of Surgery and aged ≥ 50 yr was enrolled as the control group. The prevalence of PAD was significantly higher in the study group than the control group (7.6% vs 1.7%; <I>P</I> < 0.001). To analyze the relationship of other vascular diseases and PAD, the patients were regrouped; group A (no CAD or CVD), group B (CAD only), group C (CVD only), and group D (CAD and CVD). Compared with group A, those with other vascular diseases (group B, C, D) had significantly higher prevalence of PAD, diabetes, dyslipidemia, renal insufficiency and claudication. The trend that patients with CAD or CVD are at risk of PAD is observed in this cross-sectional study in Koreans. Routine ABI measurement is recommended in these high-risk groups for early detection and proper management of PAD.</P>

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of erythropoietin (Epo) on both acute and chronic limb ischemia (ALI and CLI) and to evaluate the differences in mechanisms according to the method of Epo administration. Hindlimb ischemia was made in BALB/c mice with femoral artery ligation. The mice were divided into four groups: Group 1(control, no treatment), Group 2 (ALI, early multiple doses), Group 3 (ALI, early single high dose), Group 4 (CLI, late multiple doses). Blood flow ratio significantly increased in Group 2 in 4 weeks. Expression of pAkt and Erythropoietin receptor were significantly higher in Group 2 on postoperative day (POD) 7. The number of CD31- and vascular endothelial growth factor- positive cells were significantly higher in Group 2 on POD 7 and 56. Group 3 and 4 showed a tendency of higher cell counts than the control. The early sustained Epo was effective in improving blood flow through angiogenesis. In chronic phase, weekly multiple dosing of Epo induced angiogenesis, however, the blood flow ratio did not increase significantly. The results of this study suggest that Epo administration during the acute phase followed by maintenance for several days may be important for increasing blood flow and angiogenesis.
