Artist Teachers/Teaching Artists: Negotiating Pedagogic Identities
Vol.11 No.1
Within the context of further professional development art teachers and educators often reflect on their pedagogy through discursive and written modes of analysis and research. However, in recent years there has been a turn to visual practice as research and this paper maps how four MA students and one doctoral student engage with its possibilities. Rather than conceiving artistic practice as an alternative to their pedagogic situation, each of them finds a way to re-engage more fully with practice so as to understand this situation more fully; in this way they are able to transform both their artistic and their pedagogic practice simultaneously. The first MA student finds a way to enter art teaching by re-imagining the pedagogy of her childhood in domestic settings; the second reinvigorates his teaching with reference to artistic practices developed within a friendship; the third crosses disciplinary subject boundaries to transform the outcomes of school art; the fourth, investigates pedagogic power relations through performative strategies while the doctoral student attempts to dissolve the boundaries that make art and art education distinct categories.

Background and Purpose Interventions to reduce the risk for cerebrovascular events (CVE; stroke and transient ischemic attack [TIA]) after radiotherapy (RT) for head and neck cancer (HNCA) are needed. Among broad populations, statins reduce CVEs; however, whether statins reduce CVEs after RT for HNCA is unclear. Therefore, we aimed to test whether incidental statin use at the time of RT is associated with a lower rate of CVEs after RT for HNCA. Methods From an institutional database we identified all consecutive subjects treated with neck RT from 2002 to 2012 for HNCA. Data collection and event adjudication was performed by blinded teams. The primary outcome was a composite of ischemic stroke and TIA. The secondary outcome was ischemic stroke. The association between statin use and events was determined using Cox proportional hazard models after adjustment for traditional and RT-specific risk factors. Results The final cohort consisted of 1,011 patients (59±13 years, 30% female, 44% hypertension) with 288 (28%) on statins. Over a median follow-up of 3.4 years (interquartile range, 0.1 to 14) there were 102 CVEs (89 ischemic strokes and 13 TIAs) with 17 in statin users versus 85 in nonstatins users. In a multivariable model containing known predictors of CVE, statins were associated with a reduction in the combination of stroke and TIA (hazard ratio [HR], 0.4; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.2 to 0.8; P=0.01) and ischemic stroke alone (HR, 0.4; 95% CI, 0.2 to 0.8; P=0.01). Conclusions Incidental statin use at the time of RT for HNCA is associated with a lower risk of stroke or TIA.
The Potential Space of Art : Creativity, Affect and transgression
Vol.13 No.1
investigate the conditions that enable creativity to flourish school art education by looking at the environmental conditions that support and sustain creative activity. In the process I critique the emphasis on creative individuals drawing in Vygotskian notion of learning as a social event as well as critiquing the benign profile of creativity as a primarily productive process. The latter is examined in relation to a transgressive event in which school students "attack" their teacher through the license afforded them by a drawing "game." This is theorized in relation to Klein and her insistence on the persistence of infantile phantasy and its signiticance for creative action. To bring these ideas together I draw on Winncott's notion of a "potential space" as one in which safe, materna environments allow children to take risks, a necessity for creativity.
Vol.11 No.1

Diabetes mellitus is a dangerous disease worldwide. Indonesia has 10 million diabetic and 17.9 million prediabetic citizens. Unfortunately, less than half of these diabetic individuals are aware of their conditions and less than 1% of those receiving medical treatment achieve their healing targets. Because acupressure is believed to be an effective treatment without the use of drugs, in this study we investigated acupressure as a comfortable and effective way of treating patients with diabetes mellitus. This pilot study involved 30 participants who were split into two groups: 15 each in the experimental and the control groups. The experimental group underwent acupressure at the Zusanli (ST-36) acupoint for 30 minutes per visit for 11 weeks, whereas the control group continued their regular treatment; participants in both groups had their blood glucose randomly checked weekly. Data were analyzed using the Generalized Estimating Equation model; the result showed that the two groups were significantly different (pZ0.331 > aZ0.05; mean differenceZ99.14; Bonferroni sig. pZ0.000 < aZ0.05) and that acupressure at ST-36 was effective in reducing blood sugar. This research showed that acupressure was an effective method for reducing blood glucose and was helpful for reducing complications due to diabetes.
Vol.13 No.1
