        A systematic investigation of experimental conditions on the particle size and structure of TiO2 nanoparticles synthesized by a sol-gel method

        TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared by a sol-gel method using TiCl4 as a precursor. The effect of the TiCl4/H2O molar ratio and DBS/ethanol (two important parameters in this process) on the particle size and structure of the samples were studied. The structure and morphology of the nanoparticles were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. A systematic study was made by using the results of Design-Expert software. The optimum ratio of TiCl4/H2O and DBS/ethanol, to achieve the smallest particle size and the highest rutile content, were studied. Results showed that a lower TiCl4/H2O molar ratio led to smaller nano particles and that this goal is achieved for the lowest TiCl4/H2O molar ratio and intermediate DBS/ethanol values.

        A new ternary mixed-matrix membrane (PEBAX/PEG/MgO) to enhance CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 separation efficiency

        Mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) composed of suitable CO2-philic polymers and fillers can be attractive candidates for CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 separation due to their high CO2 permeability, good thermochemical stability, low fabrication cost, and fast production process. In this research, a novel ternary MMM was fabricated via the blending of poly (amide 12-b-ethylene oxide) (PEBAX-1074) with polyethylene glycol (PEG-200) and magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles mixture. The effects of various loadings of the fillers on CO2, N2, and CH4 permeability values through the membranes were studied. Permeation of CO2, N2, and CH4 gases through the resultant membranes at pressures of 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 bar and temperatures of 25, 35, 45, and 55 °C revealed the superiority of the MMMs for CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 separation in comparison with the pristine membranes. Particularly, at 25 °C and 2 bar, the CO2 permeability, as well as ideal CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 selectivity of the optimized MMM containing 40 wt% of PEG-200 and 8 wt% of MgO nanoparticles, rose to 210.1 Barrer, 24.9 and 60.9, corresponding to enhancement of around 225%, 23% and 24% of the CO2 permeability and selectivity compared to the neat membrane, respectively. Thus, the fabricated MMM has a satisfying potential to separate CO2 from N2.

      • Stressful Life Events and Risk of Colorectal Cancer: A Case-Control Study of Iran

        Background: Very few analytical studies are available on any association between stressful life events (SLE) and colorectal cancer (CRC), at least in Iran. The aim of this case control study was to determine the association between stressful life events (SLE) and colorectal cancer. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted in four hospital colonoscopy units in Tabriz city of Iran including 414 participants aged 40-75 years: 207 cases with CRC confirmed by pathology and colonoscopy findings and 207 controls free of neoplastic conditions were selected (from the same hospitals at the same period for the cases and after matching for age and sex). Stressful life events were assessed using a 43-item Holmes and Rahe Life Events Questionnaire. Multivariate logistic regression was used to estimate adjusted odds ratios for SLE and risk of CRC. Results: The stressful life event mean score in the case group was 141.3, in contrast to 63.8 in the control group (p<0.011). After adjusting for confounders, death of dear ones increased the risk of CRC (OR: 2.49; 95%CI: 1.41-5.13). Other types of stressful life events (family and husband disputes, serious occupational problems, unemployment of > 6 months, and Serious financial problems) were also associated with CRC, but without statistical significance. Conclusions: According to our findings, it seems that SLE may increase the risk of CRC.

        Bioacoustics of Trogoderma granarium Everts (Coleoptera: Dermestidae)

        Trogoderma granarium Everts (Coleoptera: Dermestidae) is one of the major destructive pests of grain products in hot and dry parts of the world. No information has been made available on the bioacoustic signals (BASs) of T. granarium. In this paper, the bioacoustic features of this insect have measured from larvae and adult males and females. No anechoic chamber was used in this study. The extracted features were compared to evaluate the ability of the acoustic method to determine larva or adult as well as their sex. Adult males and females and larvae T. granarium produced BASs with a length of 2–11, 2–52, and 2–30 ms with a maximum sound pressure level of 3, 36, and 17 dB, respectively. At least 60 % of all BASs were in the ranges of 2–12 impulses in larva and adult stages. The sum of the total BASs was different in larvae and adult stages. Adult males had the least number of BASs compared to adult females and larvae. Detection of the growth stage and determination of the sex of the adult T. granarium by acoustic method in the time domain depends on the feature extracted from BASs and number of their impulses. Furthermore, in the frequency domain, the most dominant frequency bands were in the range of 1–8 kHz. In this band, the most dominant frequency band was 3.5–4.5 and 1–1.7 kHz for adult males and larvae, respectively. The most dominant bands of 1–3 and 4–5 kHz were observed for adult females.

        Vermicomposting of Sewage Sludge by Lumbricus rubellus Using Spent Mushroom Compost as Feed Material: Effect on Concentration of Heavy Metals

        Vermicomposting of sewage sludge (SS) using spent mushroom compost from Pleurotus sajor-caju as feed material was conducted to determine the effect on the concentration of heavy metals, namely Cr, Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn. Previous studies have reported the feasibility of brandling worms, Eisenia foetida, for vermicomposting SS, whereas we conducted vermicomposting by employing red worms, Lumbricus rubellus, with a combination of different percentages of SS and spent mushroom compost (SMC) for 70 days subsequent to 21 days of precomposting. The vermicompost produced in treatments with a low percentage of SS were fine in texture, dark in colour and odourless in contrast to the initial physical characteristics. Results indicate that growth in earthworm numbers and biomass gain was maximum at 25 : 75 (TD)of SS : SMC compared to other treatments with 5 and 8-fold increases, respectively. The heavy metals contained in vermicompost were 0.25 ~ 11.57-fold higher than the initial concentration due to mineralization and excretion of non-accumulated heavy metals existent in the earthworms’gut, which were present prior to treatments. Even so, the concentration was below the limits set by EU and US biosolid compost standards and safe to be utilized as a biofertilizer and soil conditioner.

        Does surgical procedure type impact postoperative pain and recovery in deep inferior epigastric artery perforator flap breast reconstruction?

        Background The deep inferior epigastric artery perforator (DIEP) flap is the commonest flap used for breast reconstruction after mastectomy. It is performed as a unilateral (based on one [unipedicled] or two [bipedicled] vascular pedicles) or bilateral procedure following unilateral or bilateral mastectomies. No previous studies have comprehensively analyzed analgesia requirements and hospital stay of these three forms of surgical reconstruction. Methods A 7-year retrospective cohort study (2008-2015) of a single-surgeon's DIEP-patients was conducted. Patient-reported pain scores, patient-controlled morphine requirements and recovery times were compared using non-parametric statistics and multivariable regression. Results The study included 135 participants: unilateral unipedicled (n=84), unilateral bipedicled (n=24) and bilateral unipedicled (n=27). Univariate comparison of the three DIEP types showed a significant difference in 12-hour postoperative morphine requirements (P=0.020); bipedicled unilateral patients used significantly less morphine than unipedicled (unilateral) patients at 12 (P=0.005), 24 (P=0.020), and 48 (P=0.046) hours. Multivariable regression comparing these two groups revealed that both reconstruction type and smoking status were significant predictors for 12-hour postoperative morphine usage (P=0.038 and P=0.049, respectively), but only smoking, remained significant at 24 (P=0.010) and 48 (P=0.010) hours. Bilateral reconstruction patients' mean hospital stay was 2 days longer than either unilateral reconstruction (P<0.001). Conclusions Although all three forms of DIEP flap breast reconstruction had similar postoperative pain measures, a novel finding of our study was that bipedicled DIEP flap harvest might be associated with lower early postoperative morphine requirements. Bilateral and bipedicled procedures in appropriate patients might therefore be undertaken without significantly increased pain/morbidity compared to unilateral unipedicled reconstructions.

        Comparison of microbial communities during the anaerobic digestion of Gracilaria under mesophilic and thermophilic conditions

        <P>Mesophilic and thermophilic anaerobic digesters (MD and TD, respectively) utilizing Gracilaria and marine sediment as the substrate and inoculum, respectively, were compared by analyzing their performances and microbial community changes. During three successive transfers, the average cumulative methane yields in the MD and TD were 222.6 +/- 17.3 mL CH4/g volatile solids (VS) and 246.1 +/- 11 mL CH4/g VS, respectively. The higher hydrolysis rate and acidogenesis in the TD resulted in a several fold greater accumulation of volatile fatty acids (acetate, propionate, and butyrate) followed by a larger pH drop with a prolonged recovery than in the MD. However, the operational stability between both digesters remained comparable. Pyrosequencing analyses revealed that the MD had more complex microbial diversity indices and microbial community changes than the TD. Interestingly, Methanomassiliicoccales, the seventh methanogen order was the predominant archaeal order in the MD along with bacterial orders of Clostridiales, Bacteriodales, and Synergistales. Meanwhile, Coprothermobacter and Methanobacteriales dominated the bacterial and archaeal community in the TD, respectively. Although the methane yield is comparable, both MD and TD show a different profile of pH, VFA and the microbial communities.</P>

      • Reduced graphene Oxide/Poly(1,5 dihydroxynaphthalene)/TiO<sub>2</sub> nanocomposite conducting polymer coated on gold as a supercapacitor electrode

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A novel reduced graphene oxide/poly(1,5-dihydroxynaphthalene)/TiO<SUB>2</SUB> (RGO/PDHN/TiO<SUB>2</SUB>) ternary nanocomposite conducting polymer is electrochemically synthesized on gold electrodes for supercapacitor applications. The RGO/PDHN/TiO<SUB>2</SUB> nanocomposite polymer film is characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR), and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The electrochemical performance of the nanocomposite polymer-modified electrode in 1.0 M HClO<SUB>4</SUB> is investigated by various electrochemical methods such as cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge-discharge, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The RGO/PDHN/TiO<SUB>2</SUB> nanocomposite polymer film in a three-electrode system exhibits a large specific capacitance of 556 F g<SUP>−1</SUP> in comparison with those obtained using RGO/PDHN (432 F g<SUP>−1</SUP>) and PDHN (223 F g<SUP>−1</SUP>) at a current density of 2.4 A g<SUP>−1</SUP>. Simultaneous usage of the electrical double layer capacitance (EDLC) of RGO with the pseudocapacitive behavior of PDHN and TiO<SUB>2</SUB> results in the large specific capacitance in RGO/PDHN/TiO<SUB>2</SUB>. The electrochemical self-stabilities of RGO/PDHN/TiO<SUB>2</SUB>, RGO/PDHN, and PDHN polymer films are investigated by continuous cycling between −0.20–0.45 V. The RGO/PDHN/TiO<SUB>2</SUB> nanocomposite yields longer self-stability than that of other polymers after 1700 cycles and maintains about 74% of the initial capacitance values.</P>
