This study examined the subacute oral toxicity of Dendropanax morbiferus H.Lév leaves hot-water extracts (DMWE) using male and female Spargue-Dawley rats. Rats were orally administered the DMWE at dose levels of 0, 250, 500, 1,000, and 2,000 mg/kg body weight (BW) for four weeks. For experimental period, clinical signs and the number of deaths were examined, and feed intake and BW of all experimental animals were measured once a week for four weeks. At the end of the experiment, blood samples were collected from all rats, and all animals were euthanized and autopsies were performed to collect major organs. No dead animals were found during the experimental period. In addition, no differences were found between control and DMWE-treated groups in feed intakes, BW changes, organ weights, clinical signs, hematological parameters, and serum biochemical parameters. The results of this study provided evidence that oral administration of DMWE at the dose of 2,000 mg/kg BW is safe in rats and may not exert severe toxic effects.

We theoretically investigate the origin of the sharp spectral peak near the critical angle in the spectral power density profile of a top-emitting organic light-emitting diode (OLED). On the basis of the point dipole model, spectral power densities of the top-emitting OLED are calculated with respect to the thickness of the capping layer (CPL). Sharp peaks in the spectral power density profile are observed at certain CPL thicknesses near the spectral interface between the radiation-and waveguide-mode regions, which is determined by the critical angle. By calculating the waveguide-mode spatial profile, the sharp peak in the spectral power density profile is identified as the radiation-mode-like waveguide mode, which has a very large evanescent length near the cut-off condition of waveguide modes. By decomposing the total spectral power density into the out-coupled light and absorption loss components, we demonstrate that the sharp spectral peak near the critical angle can enhance the relative power contribution of the absorption loss.
We report on an Er-doped fiber oscillator that produces 146 fs pulses with 156 mW average power at a repetition rate of 49.9 MHz. The pulse energy reaches 3.13 nJ, surpassing the conventional power limit in the dispersion-managed soliton regime. Such high pulse power is obtained by devising a hybrid mode-locking scheme that combines saturable absorption with nonlinear polarization evolution. The oscillator also offers excellent temporal purity in the generated pulses with high power, providing a robust fiber-based frequency comb well suited for industrial uses.

We propose the Poynting vector analysis of the air mode in a top-emitting organic light-emitting diode (OLED) by combining the transfer matrix method and dipole source term. The spatial profiles of the time-averaged optical power ow of the air mode are calculated inside and outside the multilayer structure of the OLED with respect to the thickness of the semi-transparent top cathode and capping layer (CPL). We elucidate how the micro-cavity effect controlled by the thickness variation of the semi-transparent top cathode or CPL affects the internal optical power and absorption loss inside the OLED multilayer and the external optical power coupled into the air. When the calculated absorption loss and external power obtained by the proposed Poynting vector and currently-used point dipole models are compared, two calculation results are identical, which demonstrates the validity of the two models.

The existence of tumorspheres (TSs) might confer treatment resistance to pineoblastoma (PB). The existence of PB TSs with cellular immortalization potential has not yet been reported. We developed a procedure for isolating TSs from recurrent PB (rPB) and tested whether their properties made them suitable for use as a patient-derived xenograft (PDX). Immunocytochemical staining, RT-PCR and quantitative real-time PCR showed that, among stemness proteins, CD133, musashi and podoplanin were expressed at elevated levels in rPB TSs, but nestin was not. rPB TSs cultured under neuro-glial differentiation conditions expressed TUBB3, but not GFAP, MBP or NeuN. Unlike glioblastoma TSs, rPB TSs showed no clear evidence of invasion in 3D invasion assay or increased expression of genes associated with epithelial-mesenchymal transition. An orthotopic xenograft showed that tumor xenografts replicated the histopathological features of the patient tumor and expressed similar genome profiles, as determined by short tandem repeat genotyping. These data demonstrate the isolation and the characterization of rPB TSs for the first time. Using an orthotopic xenograft, we showed that rPB TSs could replicate the patient tumor, demonstrating their potential as a PDX for precision medicine.
