An ozone treatment system was introduced for an alternative method for municipal sludge treatment and disposal. An economic feasibility was examined on the basis of the cost equations. If the ozonation of waste activated sludge is targeted to reduce sludge mass or volume, a high degree of ozone dosage might be necessary. A higher ozone dose, however, results in a signficant increase of the total cost. On the contrary, a low ozone dose may result in the insufficiency in sludge reduction and dewatering improvement in spite of low capital and energy cost. Thus, there might exist an optimal ozone dose for economical sludge treatment and disposal. The sludge treatment system using ozonation for reduction and recycling is corm pared with incineration, one of promising alternatives for landfill in Korea. The cost of ozonation increases almost linearly with the plant capacity. The operational and maintenance (O&M) cost increases sharply together with increase in pure oxygen requirement. Although the O&M cost of ozonation system increases with the ozone dose required, the optimal total test appeared to exist at the ozone dose of 0.2g O₃/g DS considering other relevant costs. Through a simple cast assessment, the ozonation process proposed here appears to be cost-effective for small and medium scale wastewater treatment plants. Furthermore, the ozonated sludge can have many recycle options since it almost guarantees 100% inactivation of pathogens.
