This study aims at investigating the usefulness of press releases, documents sent to the media for the purpose of announcing a variety of news items such as scheduled events and new products, as reference materials in professional translation education for undergraduate students, focusing on Korean-to-English translation of texts on economy / finance. The findings based on the survey of 55 undergraduates and the analysis of a total of 143 target texts translated by 175 undergraduates are as follows. First, the survey respondents are most frequently using online linguistic dictionary among a variety of reference materials when they translate texts on economy / finance which requires more extralinguistic knowledge than translation of texts on other subject matters. Second, heavy dependence on these materials among undergraduates may have resulted in extralinguistic errors. Third, the use of press releases produced by government departments or institutions can help address the errors, suggesting their usefulness as more accurate and reliable reference materials.

Based on the perspective of frame semantics, this study aims at analyzing the errors by graduate students in translating texts on a specialized subject, i.e. economy/finance, related to insufficient understanding of subject areas or concepts, and the improper use of terminology; these were the two biggest challenges faced by students in translating such texts (Hong, 2015). Following were the results from an investigation of 128 translations by 71 students at a Seoul-based graduate school of translation and interpretation. First, the students invoked inaccurate or limited frames when trying to understand the meaning of subjects or concepts in the original texts, which possibly led to inaccurate or monotonous expressions in their translations. Second, even if the students invoked accurate and appropriate frames, they often chose expressions which evoked inaccurate or inappropriate frames, indicating they were unaware that a frame for a certain word or expression in one language can be precisely distinguished when it translates into another language, depending on its subjects or objects. These results suggest that insufficient knowledge or awareness of frame may cause errors by affecting the invoking and evoking process, which highlights the need to focus on relevant knowledge in translation classes in specialized areas. This study is significant in two aspects. First, the attempt to investigate translation on specialized areas adopting the concept of cognitive frame distinguishes itself in terms of subject area and method from previous framerelated research which focused merely on the translation of cultural elements or/and conceptual metaphor. Second, the analysis of translation of multiple students, both from English into Korean as well as from Korean into English, helped in identifying consistent patterns regardless of individuality and language direction, which can enhance the generalizability of research findings as well as the plausibility of conclusion.
영화 ‘기생충’의 문화소 자막 번역에 대한 중국 학생의 수용 연구

한국 영화 ‘기생충’이 제92회 아카데미 시상식에서 주요 4개 부문에서 수상했음에도 이 영화의 문화소의 자막 번역에 대한 연구는 중국에서, 그리고 수용의 관점에서 진행된 바 없다. 그러한 의미에서 본 연구는 이 영화의 문화소 자막 번역에 대한 중국 학생들의 수용 양상을 구조화 및 반구조화 설문지를 통해 고찰하고 수용 양상 간 차이의 원인을 파악하고자 한다. SPSS 소프트웨어를 통한 신뢰성 검증 후 설문조사 결과를 분석한 결과, 이 영화의 자막 번역에 대한 중국 학생들의 수용은 대체로 긍정적이었으며 이는 문화소 자막이 TT 중심 번역 전략을 택했기 때문인 것으로 판단된다. 또, ST 중심 전략으로 번역된 일부 자막 역시 학생들이 이해하기 어렵지 않았는데 이는 다매체 요소의 도움을 받았기 때문이다. 본 연구 결과는 이 영화의 다른 자막에도 유용한 번역 지침을 제공할 수 있을 것이다. While the 2019 Korean film Parasite won four leading awards at the 92nd Academy Awards, no research has been conducted on the subtitle translation of CSI (cultural specific items) in this film in China and from the reception viewpoint. Against this backdrop, this study aims to examine the reception of CSI subtitle translation of this film among Chinese college students by using a structured questionnaire and a corresponding open-ended questionnaire and find out the underlying reasons for differences in reception among the students. After verifying the reliability of the questionnaire results via SPSS software, the paper analyzed the results and found that the subtitle translation of this film, in general, is easy to be accepted by Chinese college students, and the reason seems that the CSI subtitles adopt more TT-oriented translation strategies. In addition, some ST-oriented translation was generally not difficult to be understood by students with the help of multimodal assistance such as image assistance. The findings can provide some helpful translation guidance for other subtitles of this film.
