The idea of the essence and certainty of faith stated in the Westminster Standards is the result of the most vigorous and elaborate discussion in the seventeen-century English puritanism. Traditionally, it has been accepted that the Westminster divines faithfully succeeded Calvin’s idea of faith. Since the late twentieth century, however, some have raised objection to this traditional view; while Calvin identified assurance with faith and understood assurance as the essence of faith, the Westminster standards distinguished assurance from faith and denied assurance as the essence of faith. The foremost purpose of his study to argue that Calvin and the Westminster standards held the consistent idea about faith and assurance by scrutinizing the Large and the Small Westminster Catechisms along with the Confession. This close analysis also aims to illustrate the theological significance of the Westminster Catechisms which has been relatively neglected. Against both arminianism and antimonianism, the seventeenth-century English puritans tried to stress the correct biblical understanding of faith and its proper application in Christian life. But they did not disregard the idea of the sixteenth-century reformers that faith resulted totally from saving grace, its beginning, continuance, and fulfillment depended solely on the persevering work of the Holy Spirit. Such a biblical idea of faith and its faithful application in the Westminster standards still offers a valuable teaching for the Christian life in Korean Church today, which experiences a confusion between the misunderstanding of cheap faith and the treacherous ambition of deferred faith.
