The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of masonry infill walls with different size of openings on seismic response of a reinforced concrete building. When designing a structure, in most of the cases, engineers disregard the masonry infill walls considering them as nonstructural components. However, masonry infill walls can cause a change in seismic response of structures. Especially, the ones with different size of openings can result in torsional behavior. A four-story reinforced concrete structure is used in order to evaluate the effect of asymmetric masonry infill wall on seismic response of reinforced concrete building. The masonry infill walls were modeled as compressive diagonal struts which are commonly used. Infill wall with different size of openings were used to create uni-directional eccentricity. Four earthquake records scaled to 4 different intensity levels were used as the ground motions for the analyses of example structures. The results of the analyses indicate that masonry infill walls have a negative effects on the seismic response of the building, when the building is subjected to earthquakes that is relatively stronger than the design earthquake. Masonry infill walls can change the distribution of damage throughout the structure.
