Vol.29 No.-

The purpose of this paper is to analyze an irony on binary opposition through Toni Morrison`s Sula. Sula represents an irony on binary opposition through a newly changed model with an unique character of African Americans in 1960s-1970s. Especially, Morrison tries to demonstrate the essential identification between good/evil through two extremely opposite characters- Sula and Nel. She believes that the boundary between good and evil has been judged by traditional and conventional basis and it is hard to view and recognize what is lying inside as a substance. Sula is a symbol of the evil who behaves in her own philosophy and even has an inappropriate relationship with her community. Sula is an extremely free woman and Sula`s sexual relationship with her friend`s husband caused her to be almost exiled from the community. On the contrary, Nel, introduced as Sula`s mirror image is a sincere puritan as well as an ethic black woman adapted by the long-established custom. Their different image on the binary opposition makes them find their alter-egos in each other even though they are not even aware of them themselves. However, their identity firmly constructed based on the circumstance of their family history leads two women to the different attitudes toward life. At the point of the characters` absolutely different perspective, Sula seems like a novel leaded by a woman like an evil because of her strong effect on an innocent community including Nel. However, readers become to realize that the boundary of the binary oppositions does not mean exactly what they are supposed to be and to acknowledge Morrison`s intention that is to subvert the fixed idea on binary opposition. Sula also has a variety of ironical images such as characters` names, the name of the community, and even the symbols of events. What Morrison focuses on through the whole sets of images on binary opposition is to look into the signified meaning beyond what the thing signifies. Also, she emphasizes the binary opposition always does not function ironically on the standard of the custom or tradition.

Vol.56 No.1

The purpose of this paper is to examine how the TOEIC score is positively influenced by implementing the schema activation in TOEIC LC and RC classes during a three week long D University English Immersion Program in Chungnam Province. Two different level-based LC and RC classes showed that the schema theory contributes to obtaining higher scores in TOEIC. Considering the theoretical idea of the schema, EFL learners who have internalized memories and/or experiences in certain circumstances easily comprehend information during the paper test, in forms of images and vocabulary. This paper demonstrates that previously constructed schema have a cognitive function which motivates TOEIC learners to try and understand unfamiliar expressions. In particular, this paper also verifies that the improvement of the TOEIC LC score is significantly higher than that of the TOEIC RC score in the schema activation class.

Vol.54 No.1

This paper examines the intertextuality of Toni Morrison`s Beloved and Jazz upon the theme and the narrative strategies. While these two texts have the different time background, there are the distinguished similarities of characters` roles and images. In addition to the function of the characters, the musical narrative method also strongly supports Morrison`s main massage which is African American`s overcoming the trauma from their history. Morrison is concerned about the loss of African American`s confidence and identity even after the slavery emancipation. The characters in Beloved suffer from the trauma of the diaspora and subsequently it affects the characters in Harlem, New York of Jazz. Although the conflict that the characters in Beloved and Jazz have expresses the different aspects, there exist the similar reasons originated from the African American`s history. Additionally, the musical narrative strategy is a key device to describe the character`s loneliness and isolation in both texts. African American`s music has also developed as an important medium to heal their problem and have them communicate with each other in their society. The music enables Morrison`s texts to express African American` miserable history and also the possibility of overcoming their identity while it mingles together with the language.

Vol.58 No.3

This paper analyzes the aspects of consciousness revealed within the diaspora texts of Chang-rae Lee``s Native Speaker and Toni Morrison``s Jazz. Korean immigrants and their children realize that assimilation may be the best way they can live just like the native Americans, but it is never easy for them to succeed because they have internal conflicts in private realms and public realms according to Hannah Arendt``s theory. Due to language barriers with naturalized Korean American children and their Korean immigrant parents, the communication at home which is called the private realm causes them to be alienated. Meanwhile, African American family history in the southern part of America affects them to keep grasping their consciousness and forces them to remain silent. This situation causes another severance of communication among African Americans and even pushes them to commit the extremely tragic violence. These are how these two ethnic groups came to have ambiguous identities and fail to have a sincere national citizenship. Now, it is urgent for these two ethnic people not to look on their life and to recognize how significant the balance of communication between the private realm and the public realm.

Vol.11 No.3

The Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s in New York was the significantly advanced era for the African American`s history. The cultural characteristics and its values of African Americans were paid much attention to by the white people and diverse types of Afro-American arts were exploded with great popularity. In the period of the post war, in particular, the infinite possibilities in the flourishing city had a huge scale of immigrants gather in the North of the U.S. African Americans also rushed to the industrial cities from the South in order to obtain a job which can guarantee more stable status of economy under the decent freedom and authority. Harlem in Jazz, however, was not perfect space for African Americans as they expected. As they confronted the city directly after slavery for the first time, African Americans did not know how to respond to it and had no choice but to comply with the city`s discrimination and sometimes were forced to be silent again. The unresolved desire and anxiety of the individual and even the gloomy jazz music on the street drove the characters out to another marginal life in the city which is nothing but seemingly gorgeous. Jazz implies the various symbols and techniques of jazz music used as narrative strategy as well as the political and social situation of Harlem Renaissance era. Morrison narrates the brutal violences and racial tragedy very indifferently like playing the urban music, which sounds more shocking than the fact of the cruel affairs. Through Morrison`s narrative techniques, Jazz reconsiders the issues of the African American community in modern society and reclaims their inherent spirit and motherhood to forgive and harmonize the African American community.

Vol.38 No.4

The purpose of this study is to analyze the aspect of consciousness of transnational adoptee sisters in Jane Jeong Trenka s The Language of Blood with object relations theory. Especially, it is about how attachment with their birth parents affects the process and identity formation. Object relations theorists argue that attachments between infants and mothers have an important effect on human life, and that childhood experiences and environment are deeply involved in mental development. Carol specifically imprints the trauma of maternity loss, and has no illusion of birth mother and motherland due to the memory of the poor economic condition and birth father’s violence. And now, she is a middle class American through an active assimilation. Jane also has a problem of her maternity privation in her unconsciousness because she had an absolute lack of attachment to her birth mother. As she realizes that the birth mother’s maternity cannot be replaced with her adoptive mother, she suffers from mental illness as her fantasy and internal conflicts about the maternity. Jane eventually reunites with her birth mother. She forgives and mourns her birth mother, and heals the painful trauma and decides to live her own life, not as an adoptee’s.
