Hematologic and hemodynamic findings during hemodialysis in 13 beagle dogs

Hemodialysis is an effective therapy for renal failure in veterinary practice. To evaluate hematologic and hemody- namic changes during hemodialysis, 13 dogs were treated with hemodialysis, after which complete blood cell counts (CBC), serum chemistry, and mean systolic blood pressure were analyzed. For CBC, white blood cells (WBC) and platelets underwent significant changes. In serum chemis- try, there were significant differences in blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, total protein, albumin, globulin, amylase, calcium, potassium, and phosphorus contents. Further, mean systolic blood pressure suddenly increased in early hemodialysis and decreased significantly thereafter. During hemodialysis, adverse effects were observed in some dogs as follows: bleeding (1 dog), anemia (2 dogs), leukopenia (8 dogs), thrombocytopenia (2 dogs), and hypotension (1 dog). This study demonstrates hematologic and hemodynamic effects during hemodialysis as well as complications similar to human medicine. Before applying the commercialized human hemodialysis system to canine renal failure patients, we monitored hematologic and hemodynamic findings dur- ing hemodialysis in healthy beagle dogs.
Single Extrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt in 3 Dogs; CT Findings and Progress

Two Maltese (2-year-old, intact female and 4-month-old, intact female) and a Pekingese (10-year-old, intact male) dogs were referred due to vomiting, anorexia, head-pressing and hypersalivation. Physical examinations, complete blood count, serum chemical analysis, radiography, ultrasonography and computed tomography (CT) were evaluated. Laboratory findings in these dogs included high hepatic enzyme, serum bile acid and ammonia concentration. Microhepatia was found on abdominal radiographs in two dogs. The existence of portosystemic shunt was presented in abdominal ultrasonography. The shunt vessel was identified in all dogs by CT imaging. Based on three-dimensional CT reconstruction, the origin and termination of each shunt vessel were defined certainly. In consequence, each dog was diagnosed single extrahepatic portosystemic shunt. After diagnosis, surgical treatment was performed in all dogs. This case report describes clinical finding, imaging characteristics, and three-dimensional CT imaging of single extrahepatic portosystemic shunt cases.

The mare had lameness and asymmetry edematous on its tarsal and metatarsal joints at the initial physical examination. The pain was elicited with a palpation along the metatarsal articulations. No significant abnormalities were detected in the screening test. However, thermographic images revealed a significant increase in the surface temperature at the joint of the hindlimb when compared to the reference range. At necropsy, an irregularity of the surface and excessive synovial fluid were observed on the right tarsal joint. No bacterial growth was shown in the cultures of synovial fluid. Staphylococcus aureus was detected in the subcutaneous discharge. Taken together, the thermography images were very useful in localizing the area of injury and were an effective diagnostic methodology for assessing lameness.
