East Japan Railway Company developed an digital ATC signalling system instead of conventional ATC system and now is making progress the construction tokyo area Keihin-Tohoku Line between Minamiurawa and Tsurumi. But replacing into new system with existing ATC system in operation should be performed without affecting current running system and the technology that makes it possible for current system and new system to coexist, initialization of system, preparation for an emergency should be organized not to affect overall system. Controlling method of digital ATC signalling system and "assurance technique" for solving the problems when replacing will be mentioned in this paper.

A track-circuit device exploits two rails as a conductor of an electrical circuit. It detects the presence or absence of the trains with variation of received level when wheel sets of the train shunt rails together. So, it plays an important role in train operation. Non-insulated audio frequency(AF) track-circuit device can separate the rails into tracks by insulated joints without physically cutting the rails. And it transmits AF signals at track boundary, of which frequency is different between adjacent tracks. It has been employed at station-to-station section of domestic high speed rail, general rail, and subway. But It was not used at station yard of complicated general railway where lots of branches exist. In this paper, we consider current development status of non-insulated AF track-circuit device for the use of station yard.

A study which is to develop the low-cost urban railway system for low-density line such as Gwang-ju subway Line 2 is in progress, and its TCS(Train Control System) is required as an economic system which is able to train operation suitable in low-density line. We have developed the signaling equipment which is configured with automatic block system between stations, and the control center’s equipment in order to meet the requirements of TCS mentioned above. In this paper, we propose the control procedure of ATS to be required for train operation management in the low-density line such as Gwang-ju subway Line 2. The control procedure of ATS considered all features such as the requirements analysis for train operation management, the functions of train control system to be applied and the block type. Also, it considered the station(interlocking, passenger, turn-back) type, station control(stop, route, departure, turn-back departure, turn-back) type, and train operation management for exiting and entering depot. The ATS control procedure proposed in this paper has an advantage in the cost and efficiency through unification and optimization of its function. And in cost of operating and maintenance, the ATS system has a feature that can be significantly reduced.

The intelligent safety system for level crossing which employs information and communication technology has been developed in USA and Japan, etc. But, in Korea, the relevant research has not been performed. In this paper, we analyze the cause of railway level crossing accidents and the inherent problem of the existing safety equipments. Based on analyzed results, we design the intelligent safety system which prevent collision between a train and a vehicle. This system displays train approaching information in real-time at roadside warning devices, informs approaching train of the detected obstacle in crossing areas, and is interconnected with traffic signal to empty the crossing area before train comes. Especially, we present the video based obstacle detection algorithm and verify its performance with prototype H/W since the abrupt obstacles in crossing areas are the main cause of level crossing accidents. We identify that the presented scheme detects both pedestrian and vehicle with good performance. Currently, we demonstrate developed railway crossing intelligence system at one crossing of Young-dong-seon line of Korail with Sea Train cockpit.

The collision accident between train and automobile at the level crossing comprises more than 90 percent of all level crossing accidents and has tendency to be caused by human mistakes(ignoring STOP sign, careless driving, poor skill in driving, and so forth) more than other railway accident. VMS(Variable Message Signs), the intelligent technology usually used for the highway efficiency, can be applied to a level crossing system to inform automobile drivers of entry-and-exit information of train, upcoming of the next train, accident, and failure of crossing control facilities. In this study prototype of real-time information display equipment to inform automobile drivers of the level crossing related information is presented. The plan for pilot test-bed construction of the prototype are investigated for feasibility analysis.

The synchronized visual message system device of level crossing provides warning system with the use of developed corresponding technology when the train is approaching forward to limited distance in level crossing. To ensure of safety driving for coming transit from road, it detect the location and velocity of train and transport the information to wayside warning device to preventthe collision with train. This paper is about the detailed design of synchronize VMS for passing transit at the level crossing and develop the physical contents of level crossing VMS with expression words, operational device, massage transportation algorism which are based on the proto type study of communication method and information contents for level crossing VMS.

Korean-Automated Guideway Transit (K-AGT) was successfully developed through Light Rail System Development Project. Since then the domestic development rate of on-board signalling system of light rail has been improved up to 90% by Practical Utilization Project of Light Rail. After utilization project furthermore POSCO ICT has developed the wayside signalling system of CBTC including wireless communication equipment. KRRI carried out the performance test of the wireless communication interfacing and using the other CBTC equipments of KyungSan Test Line so as to see whether it conforms IEEE 802.11x international communication standard in view of operational concept of CBTC. In this paper we presents the test plan test items and the analysis results of maximum communication distance tests between on-board and wayside radio sets.
