Vol.46 No.-

No, Ja-Young is a writer who achieved commercial success with the flame of love, resistance in 1920`s. But he lost prestige as a writer because of the frequent plagiarism. Fellow writers didn`t allow that he was a writer, for they thought that he wrote less than worthy novels. No was excluded from Literary circle, that is not the problem of a writer but the symbolic event which means the specialization of Literary circles at that time. No`s novels had something to do with ``sin-pa-so-sul``, that is dime novel and is made of ``ddak-ji-bon``. The former provided a triggering event and the latter were written much after the model of narration and sensibility of the former. They fell to be recoded but was present as an undercurrent in the history of literature. The more it is far from ``sin-pa-so-sul``, the more it is a good novel. In that sense, writers regarded ``sin-pa-so-sul`` as reference model from the denial side. Therefore, the study of ``sin-pa-so-sul`` provides new view point of prospecting the history of Korean modern literature.

Vol.25 No.4

This thesis examines the possibility of developing Christian-related personal competency through novel education in Christian universities. Today, Christianity is not a popular symbol among students. Nevertheless, Christian universities have a responsibility to teach students about the founding philosophy. In the field of education, the soul of Christianity is related to personality education. P University interprets Christianity as selflessness. As a liberal arts education, novel education helps students develop sympathy. If we see altruism as sympathy ability, novel education is suitable for personality education in Christian universities. In this regard, I suggested reading Raymond Carver's The Cathedral (1981). This work depicts the sympathy between a blind person and a non-disabled person. It was expressed as a figure holding two hands that was drawing the Cathedral. Auguste Rodin's The Cathedral(1908) was represented as a hand-to-hand contact. The similarity between the two works leads students to reflect on the nature of Christianity and to think about the meaning of sympathy.

Vol.93 No.-

The purpose of this article is to reveal the characteristics of Fall of Vietnam as the narrative of cracks and sutura through the analysis several editions of Fall of Vietnam and the secondary text related to that. Fall of Vietnam is a book published in Chinese in 1905 by Liang qi-chao(1873~1929) after hearing Phan Boi Chau(1866~1940)'s words. After that, Hyeonchae(1886~1925) translated it into a mixed style of writing Korean with Chinese characters in 1906, followed by Ju Si-gyeong(1876~1914) and Lee Sang-ik(1881~?) in 1907 to translate it into the Korean style. Judging from the fact that three versions were published within a short period of time, we can guess what the ripple effect was in Korea at that time. Fall of Vietnam was banned from publication in 1909 by Japan. There are no traces of books that dominated the reading scene in Korea and China in the early 1900s in Japan at that time. The content of the book, which criticizes France as the Empire, did not attract the interest of Japan as a novel or a history book. This symbolically shows that the path to political solidarity is not easy even though using the same Chinese character. Fall of Vietnam was read in the late Korean language and even during the Japanese colonial period, when publication was prohibited. Reading Fall of Vietnam led to a passion for patriotism and enlightenment. However, Fall of Vietnam was not necessarily read in this way. It was read at the level of sharing the sorrow caused by the loss of the country, and it was also read at the level of finding the cause of the collapse of nation. It was also read in terms of discussing differences in colonial rule. It contains the defeatism that we cannot overcome the colonial rule of the empire on our own.

Vol.61 No.-

This paper deals with 'patterns of development' in the writing textbook for the college students. ‘Patterns of development in writing’ is important part of writing education for beginners. For studying the patterns of development, students learn the concept and practice within the defined the frame. If, in the writing class, as perspective of writing education, there are interventionism, maturationism and interventionism, among them, interventionism is associated with teaching patterns of development, which is the reasons that professor can teach the concept easily. It wasn't until the 1970s that the writing textbook for college students was composed and educated. The patterns of development is an important part of the writing curriculum. The current college textbook, however, does not clearly state why the patterns of development is required. So they deal with how English and Japanese textbooks described the topic of the patterns of development that is to exposition, narrative, description, and argument. In the writing textbook, ‘patterns of development in writing’ has started from English writing education and japan accept it in Meiji period and Korea accepted it in the 1970s. About 'patterns of development in writing', I proposed as follows. First, the patterns of development are the way to identify and think about the subject. Second, it is better to focus on the description than to introduce the one of four forms. Third, narrative, description, and argument are put in the subsection of the exposition. Finally, it is good to place patterns of development in writing in the writing process.

Vol.41 No.-

This paper is an attempt to shed light upon life and works of Yook Jung-Soo who wrote Shin-so-seols during the late Chosen Dynasty. His works include Shadow of Blood,Larva, and the Sound of Waterwheel which were published in ChangHak-bo in February,April, and May of 1908. In the same year,he additionally wrote a Shin-so-seol, titled Gayageum and Toongso Under the PineTree. The list of the aforementioned four works is the only known works by YookJung-Soo. I also discovered that YookJung-Soo translated OkRhee-hon, a Chinese novel ,into Korean. This work was serially published in MaeilShinbo, a Korean daily, between February 15,1919 and May 3,1919. The scope of this paper is not limited to YookJung-Soo`s life, but it also covers the lives of YookYong-Jong, his grandfather ,and YookJong-Yoon, who wash is father. His grandfather YookYong-Jong was a leading advocate of the OpenDoorPolicy, which was known as DongdoSeoggiron towards the end of Chosen Dynasty. YookJong-Yoon, his father, was a pro-Japanese politician in the same era. YookJung-Soo was a graduate of PaiChaiHakdang and a life-long member of YMCA. In this paper, I attempted to prove that the novel Gayageum and Toongso Under the Pine Tree was heavily influenced by his grandfather`s thought. In addition, I uncovered that YookJung-Soo stopped writing due to his father s pro-Japanese activities. YookJung-Soo introduced epistlatory and personal journal styles in his final work OkRhee-hon. This shows that YookJong-Soo had deep interest in using variety of techniques.

Vol.49 No.-

Bang, In-keun was a publisher of Cho-sun-mun-dan and a modern Korean popular novelist. Those days, he wasn``t recognized as a writer by colleagues of literary circle. They regarded him as a writer who wrote dime novels. He accepted their criticism about his popular novels. In his later years, he repented of having not written Christian fictions that dealt with Christianity. He wished that he had been a writer of Christian fictions. But contrary to his repentance, I think that he is a memorable writer of Christian fictions because he produced achievements of Christian fiction history in Korea. He was a journalist in the Christian Messenger, Ki-Dok-Sin-Bo that was published by Presbyterian and Methodist from 1915 to 1937. In this, he wrote Christian children``s stories, essay, and novels named Searching utopia, Revolution, The song of birds that don``t cry. Specially, Searching utopia is a narrative that a libertine repents his the past through Cristian faith. I think that it is a memorable novel of Christian fiction history in Korea, because there were few Christian fictions at that time. Interestingly, his popular novel, Light of Evil city resembles with Christian novel, Searching utopia. For example, Two novels center on the love of a young students and a triple love affair. They represent that a City is the space of evil and a farm village is the space of good dichotomically. That is to say, Christian novel, Searching utopia has popular appeal. I think that it is not a feature of Bang``s Christian novels but a feature of Christian novel, because a purpose of Christian novels is to be read to many people for evangelizing. It shows that Christian narrative relates popularity.

Vol.- No.50

The goal of this paper is to review the relative importance of the korean evangelism document published by Sammun publishing company for gospel preaching in the early 1890s. ``Dialogue between the two friends Zhang and Yuan``, ``Leading the family in the right way`` and ``Conversation with a Temple Keeper`` are a kind of the narrative literature in the form of questions and answers to introduce a doctrine. One of them, ``Dialogue between the two friends Zhang and Yuan`` recounts twelve meetings between a Christian believer and one of his neighbors and they discuss the major themes of Christian doctrine. The writer places the dialogues firmly within a context. And in ``Leading the family in the right way``, Mr. Lee has religious beliefs after he met missionary in church. This novel has rich contents because it is a work of doctrine emphasized more than the narrative. Also, in ``Conversation with a Temple Keeper``, christian missionary reasons with a temple keeper on beliefs and he finally persuade a temple keeper to have christian beliefs logically. Significantly, these novels influenced on the articles, which had interlocutory style and put in a newspaper in the late 1980s. As written style, the chinese novels written by western missionary living in China were translated into Korean language by western missionary living in Korea. Considering a great deal of weight of narrative literature written in question and answer form published by newspaper at the modern turning point in the late 1880s, the evangelism documents published by Sammun publishing company were worthy of notice. This paper demonstrated indirect and direct relationships between the narrative editorial of newspaper in the form of questions and answers and these novels. Above all, Considering a description in the form of questions and answers of the newspaper, the early newspapers can be regarded as a missionary newspaper connected with Sammun publishing company. Though korean language writing, a missionary draw the people as believers and at the modern turning point an intellectual have a possibility to draw the people as a people. Considering the meanings of modern novel as calling names of a people, a role of korean evangelism document can not overlook.

Vol.- No.56

This paper is written to discuss the reason of studying abroad in America in Sin-so-seol. The origin of Sin-so-seol was in 1884, because it is Tribulations of age as the time of war and reform. There were the Sino-Japanese War, the Gabo(甲午) Reform, and Dong-Hak Peasant War. It means that Sin-so-seol``s writers thought the hardships of Korean in 1884 as material for a novel. In Sin-so-seol, a hero and a heroine went to America to study in many case. The ultimate purpose of their studies in America was to modernize Korea with their new learning from Amerian universities. But their studying abroad in America came from the fantasy for the civilization and a desire of successful career. Interestingly, they selected not Japan but America in which they studied abroad. The reasons is as follows. First, Korean thought that America is the modt prosperous country. Second, Christian missionaries helped Korean stdent to study abroad in America. Third, Korean believed in America than in Japan.
