The strain SL-387 which produces new inhibitors of aminopeptidase M, MR-387A and B, was isolated from a soil sample. The strain has branched substrate mycelia, from which aerial hyphae develop in the form of open spirals. Spore surface is smooth. Melanoid and soluble pigme- nts were observed. The isolate contains LL-diaminopimelic acid in its cell wall hydrolysate, and has no pectinolytic activity. The strain SL-387 is closely related to Streptomyces griseoruber and S. naganishii, but is different from these strains in some cultural and physiological characteristics. This strain was, therefore, designated as Streptomyces sp. SL-387. The effects of several carbon and nitrogen sources on the production of the inhibitor were examined. Among them, glucose, galactose, mannose, and xylose were effective as a carbon source and soybean meal, soytone, fish meal, and gluten meal were effective as a nitrogen source. The maximum peak of the inhibitor production in jar fermentor was obtained on the fifth day of culture.

Scillascilloside E-3 (1) and E-1 (2) were isolated from the bulbs of Scilla scilloides. The cytotoxic activities of these compounds were tested against murine (B16/F-10, 3LL) and human cancer cell lines (MCF7, PC-3, HT29, LOX-IMVI, A549 and HT1080). These compounds exhibited a significant cytotoxic activities against all tested cancer cells. Futhermore, the contents of 1 and 2 in S. scilloides are 43.2 and 27.9 mg/kg, respectively.

A diverse panel of human tumor cell lines and a mouse melanoma cell line (B16-F1) were used for the cytotoxicity test of the nine sesquiterpene lactones with ${\beta}-methylene-{\gamma}-lactone$ group isolated from Hemisteptia lyrata, Chrysanthemum zawadskii and Chrysanthemum boreale. In the cell adhesion inhibitory activity test against B16-F1 mouse melanoma cell, hemistepcin B, cumambrin B, costunolide and tulipinolide were shown significant activities with $IC_{50}$ range of 2.2, 4.1, 0.9 and $0.3\;{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. In the cytotoxicity test against human tumor cells, the most active compound was costunolide having $IC_{50}$ values of below $0.3\;{\mu}g/ml$ against all the tested cell lines except for UACC62. Cumambrin A, hendelin and costunolide exhibited more strong activity against HCT15 and UO-31 cell lines than a positive control, adriamycin. All tested compounds showed an $IC_{50}$ values of below $5.0\;{\mu}g/ml$ against all the tested cell lines.

Media optimization for the production of MR-387A and B, novel aminopeptidase M inhibitors by Streptomyces sp. SL-387 isolated from a soil was studied. Optimized medium was consisted of 1% glucose, 3% soybean meal, 0.2% yeast extract, 0.1% beef extract, 0.3% NaCl, 0.01% K₂HPO₄, 0.3% CaCO₃. 0.001% MnCl₂·4H₂O, 0.001% ZnCl₂·7H₂O, and 0.0005% MgSO₄·7H₂O, and adjusted to pH 7.0 before autoclaving. When the optimized medium was used as a fermentation medium, maximum productivity of MR-387 was reached at 120 hours of fermentation, and total productivity was 909.1 U/㎖.

A strain that inhibited the growth of Pellicularia sasakii was isolated from the soil and identified as Pseudomonas aeruginosa 3120. A dark brownish antibiotic. MRL3120 isolated and purified from the culture broth of P. aeruginosa 3120 was soluble in ethylacetate, chloroform and methanol, and it was active against gram-positive and negative bacteria as well as fungi. The structure of MRL3120 was identified as a chelate compound consisting of two N-methyl-N-thioformyl-hydroxylamine and a copper ion by the analysis of UV. IR, and EI-MS spectra and other physico-chemical properties and supposed to have a structure of fluopsin C related compound. Addition of CuSO₄ into the fermentation medium containing soybean meal increased antifungal activity but no activity was found in the presence of EDTA (0.1%, v/v). However antibiotic MRL3120 was not produced in the fermentation medium containing soytone instead of soybean meal but it was rapidly produced by the addition of CuSO₄.
