The effect of several compounds on the enzyme action of the nitrile hydratase was studied. An excess of acrylonitrile as substrate was shown to inhibit the activity of the enzyme. This inhibition occured at a substrate concentration of 0.2 ㏖/L. The nitrile bioconversion products (acrylamide, propionamide) and their structural analogues (acrylic acid, cyanide) were shown to inhibit the enzyme competitively. The most important inhibition found was that of cyanide (K_i=3.8×10^(-3) ㏖/L), a breakdown product of some nitriles.

Experimental and theoretical studies on three-phase hollow fiber bioreactor were performed using an asymmetric hollow fiber in which glucose oxidase was entrapped in the porous sponge region and silicone coating was applied on top of that. Oxygen limitation has been confirmed by theory and experiment when the glucose concentration was above 75 mM. The measured effectiveness factor was lower by 15-25% than the predicted one, which may be attributed to the deactivation of the enzyme upon immobilization. The theoretical and experimental values were in good agreement within error limits of 15-25%.

The artificial kidney is reviewed with an emphasis on the chemical engineering aspects. This remarkable lifesaving device helps many people with acute or chronic kidney failure to extend their lives. Its history of development, transport phenomena in a dialyzer, shape of dialyzers, dialysis fluid and adsorbents are reviewed briefly. Also a simple modeling of the treatment is presented.

The application of physics, mathematics, chemistry and various kinds of engineering principles to problems of medicine and biology has increased tremendously for the last twenty years. Especially the close interaction between medicine and engineering has resulted in the birth of a new field, biomedical engineering. The role of chemical engineer in this new interdisciplinary area is reviewed here with a brief introduction to other relevant areas like biomechanics and biomedical electronics.
