This paper describes a system that can be used to recognize unknown materials regardless of the change in ambient temperature by using temperature response curve fitting and fuzzy neural network(FNN). There are problems with a recognition system which utilize temperature responses. It requires too many memories to store the vast temperature response data and it has to be filtered to remove the noise which occurs in experiments. Thus, this paper proposes a practical method using curve fitting to remove the above problems of memories and noise. Also, the FNN is proposed to overcome the problem caused by the change of ambient temperature. Using the FNN which is learned by temperature responses on fixed ambient temperatures and known thermal conductivity, the thermal conductivity of the material can be inferred on various ambient temperatures. So the material can be recognized via its thermal conductivity.

This paper describes an effort of improving performances of ultrasonic ranging system using V40 microprocessor. Conventional ranging systems are somewhat inaccurate because they do not have capability of compensating changes in medium condition. The novel ranging system overcomes this disadvantage by placing a dummy sensor functioning as a standard calibrating instrument in the same medium and by providing data processing capability using V40 controller. Also data communication between V40 and personal computer via RS232C makes it possible to use the ranging system for varieties of other applications such as analysis of static and dynamic system.

To manage lead-acid battery efficiently and to use it longer in UPS, the state of charge(SOC) indicator of the battery is needed. So a new approach to developing battery SOC indicator for UPS is discussed in this paper. This method to determining SOC by combining the available data of discharge characteristics of a battery with neural network(NN) is presented. The 3-layered NN with back propagation algorithm has been used Exprement results show that the proposed method is appropriate as SOC indicator of the battery.

A speed controller of a induction motor using Microcontroller and Fuzzy logic is presented in the paper. Generally, fuzzy logic controller is known as a controller which can be coped with a non-linear and a complex system. A fuzzy logic is used for robust and fast speed control and space vector modulation method is used for PWM wave generation in this proposed system. The results of experiment show excellence of the proposed system and that the proposed system is appropriate to control the speed of a induction motor for industrial application.
