The subjects of this study were 258 Korean-Chinese parent-child dyads of an elementary school in Yanbian Province, northeastern China. Research questions covered relationships among children`s school adjustment and ecological factors, significance of factors within ecological levels, and direct and indirect effects in causal relationships. Results showed significant effects within each ecological level. Achievement motivation of the individual system, home environment and social support of the microsystem, and mother`s job satisfaction in the exosystem had significant relationships with children`s school adjustment. Mother`s education and job satisfaction influenced school adjustment through home environment; the causal relationship between social support and school adjustment was mediated by achievement motivation. Personal and general factors from each ecological level were more significant than ethnic related factors in explaining children`s school adjustment.

In this study, children`s representation of attachment was assessed by the Attachment Story Completion Task(Bretherton, Ridgeway, & Cassidy, 1990) administered to 101 5-to 6-year-old children(56boys, 45girls). Teacher-child relationship and social competence were evaluated by a questionnaire administered to preschool teachers. Based on the children`s representation of attachment in their narrative responses to the story stems, 56.4% of the children were classified as having secure, 22.8% as insecure-avoidant, and 20.8% as insecure-disorganized attachments. Children with secure representation of attachment exhibited more social competence and fewer behavioral problems in the child-care setting than children with insecure representation of attachment. This study showed that the child`s internal model of attachment formed from experience with caregiver is capable of transmitting social relationships outside the home.

Korean proverbs concerning parent child relationships were collected from literature. 95 proverbs were selected for this study. The proverbs were categorized by meaning; value of child, affection toward child, boy-preference, positive-negative affection coward daughter, importance of child`s education, child-rearing stress, identification of parent, authoritative control, and filial piety. The subjects (223 married men and 224 married women) were asked to indicate their understanding of the meaning of the proverbs. The degree of agreement was analyzed. The results revealed variability in their understanding and the high degree of agreement on the proverbs. Demographic variables, age, educational level, and religion, appeared to be the important factors in the subjects` agreement.
