        왜 영화소설이 필요한가?

이자원(Lee Ja won) 영상영어교육학회 2010 영상영어교육 (STEM journal) Vol.11 No.2

This paper deals with two issues: how to encourage students to read more and how to successfully teach students of mixed language proficiency in one class. Recently there has been less and less reading content in the Korean college curriculum. However, reading has an important role to play in enhancing overall language proficiency and it should not be ignored in language classes. Mixed level classes are quite common in Korean language schools. They are one of the causes for the decline in reading classes at the college level. This paper considers possible solution to these two issues: using a suitable text. Brown (2007) argues that teachers should use textbooks that are intrinsically motivating. In order to investigate this, two classes, each consisting of 80 students (A and B) were assigned the novel The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks as a study text while also being required to watch the movie based on the book. The research was conducted over a period of 3 months. The findings showed that novels that have movie adaptations can be considered suitable study texts for language students. The movie provides the schema for students to approach the book, helping them to understand the contents of the book. The results also showed that putting students of different language-levels together in a movie-based language class made language learning possible at different levels in the same class.

영화대사암기 증진을 위한 감정 단어들의 역할 연구

        이자원(Lee Ja won),박영(Park Young) 영상영어교육학회 2016 영상영어교육 (STEM journal) Vol.17 No.3

The aim of this paper is to suggest one very useful memory activity through emotional words and expressions in movies. In this paper, the concept, ‘valence’ (Kuperman, Estes, Brysbaert, & Warriner, 2014) was used to activate memorization. In order to do this, five subjects were chosen from college level students. The movie Cruel Intentions was used as a teaching material. Two sets of tests were given to the subjects. One was word recognition. 15 words (5 positive, 5 negative, and 5 neutral) were given to the subjects. The response speed and rate of correct answers were analyzed. The results showed that the response speed was 2.68 seconds (positive), 2.72 seconds (negative) and 3.28 seconds (neutral) and that the rate of correctness was 36% (positive), 80% (negative) and 48% (neutral). This indicates that negative words were helpful in enhancing word recognition. A sentence recall test was also applied with 15 sentences, each including one of the above 15 words. The findings for correctness were 82.4% for positive, 85.6% for negative, and 81.6% for neutral. Errors were less than one word in each of the three categories. The results of the survey suggest that the word recognition test helped greatly with the subjects’ sentence recall.

        Authenticity in Movies

이자원(Lee Ja won) 영상영어교육학회 2005 영상영어교육 (STEM journal) Vol.6 No.2

The use of "authenticity" in teaching foreign languages has been accepted as an effective teaching method. It is believed that such authentic texts provide learners with a language-rich environment and they play a key role in promoting communicative skills. McGarry (1995) argues that authentic texts can enable learners to work independently of the teacher if used extensively and appropriately. In other words, authentic texts are useful self-study materials. McGarry calls this "leaner autonomy," which means that learners should take more responsibility of their own study of the foreign language than done otherwise before. Taking consideration of the unique characteristics of the individual learner and the student-centered method of study, further research on this authenticity will be compared with these new trends in education. In this paper, therefore, one suggestion made is that movies are the best way to foster an authentic language-rich environment and to understand the relationship between language form and the communication function in an EFL setting like in Korea. In order to accomplish this, this paper will first clarify the definition of "authenticity." Second, it will examine why authentic texts are useful in language acquisition. Third, it will explain why contrived language texts are not appropriate materials in the development of communicative skills as defined in terms of authenticity. And lastly, the following three questions about the use of movies will be discussed: why, what and how.

미국 드라마를 활용한 수업모형에 대한 연구

        이자원(Lee Ja won),이기정(Lee Kee Jung) 영상영어교육학회 2009 영상영어교육 (STEM journal) Vol.10 No.1

This paper sheds light on how American soap opera can be used in language classes by suggesting a teaching model. The model helps dispel the belief that words used in American soap opera are too difficult for students with low intermediate proficiency. More specifically, the model largely focuses on the use of nouns for two reasons: (a) nouns are readily accessible even for students with low intermediate proficiency, and (b) first and second language acquisition theories support that nouns are typically acquired first in the process of language learning. In addition, the model promotes different skills of language, i.e., speaking, listening, and reading. For speaking, simple and easy routines and expressions are given to students who are then instructed to practice and internalize them. For listening, a cloze test is provided with emphasis on nouns with which students are already familiar, followed by dictation of the short routines and expressions. For reading, students are asked to read the drama's script accompanied by translation, with focus on grammar and pronunciation. The pedagogical suggestion rooted in whole language learning can offer an instructive and enjoyable learning experience.

표현력 강화를 위한 언어자각력 증진에 관한 연구

이자원(Lee Ja won) 영상영어교육학회 2008 영상영어교육 (STEM journal) Vol.9 No.1

This paper emphasizes the importance of developing an initial Language Awareness in order to build up the ability of learners to use English language expressions. Three sample activities designed to promote Language Awareness were developed and through the involvement of thirteen participants their effectiveness was studied. The participants learned English expressions by watching movies and television sitcoms and engaging in different activities based on the input they had experienced: discussion activities, discussion plus caption activities, and discussion plus silent-viewing caption activities. According to this study, discussion plus silent-viewing caption activities appear to be the most effective in promoting Language Awareness. It is suggested that this strategy is more effective in producing the successful acquisition of expressions as it allows learners to focus on language forms and is more supportive from the viewpoint of psycholinguistics.

        영화 선정기준에 관한 연구

이자원(Lee Ja won) 영상영어교육학회 2000 영상영어교육 (STEM journal) Vol.1 No.-

Using movies to teach English has become popular of late. The appeal of movies is understandable given that so many students enjoy watching film. However, if the EFL lecturer is to satisfy the goal of teaching English, then 3 criteria need to be satisfied in selecting films for use in the classroom. First, the movies considered should be popular and current so that they appeal to students. Second, the movie scripts should be interesting and contain usable English language. At this point in the selection process, some movies will have been discarded and others added. Third, the instructor needs to examine the films in terms of what I want students to learn from this film and how the items can selected for learning be practiced ; the final stage of sorting takes place in consideration of this last criterion. After working out activities for the third criterion, the instructor has a film lesson that satisfies popular demand and interest and is based on sound pedagogical objectives.
