Dry water is a core-shell structured powder which comprises a very fine water core covered with hydrophobic silica particles. Recently, the dry water has attracted attention as a new type of fire extinguishing agents. However, characteristics of the dry water as a fire extinguishing agent have not been revealed until now. To our best knowledge, this is the first work to uncover effects of particle size of the dry water on the fire extinguishing performance. Pristine dry water, which has heterogeneous particle size distribution, was carefully separated by sieving method into three fractions which were a small size (ca. 110 ㎛) fraction, a medium size (ca. 220 ㎛) fraction and a large size (ca. 400 ㎛) fraction. Microscopic observations confirmed the effective separation of dry water’s particle size. In extinguishing tests of wood cribs fire, the medium size dry water showed most excellent fire extinguishing performance, as compared to other dry waters having small (ca. 110 ㎛) and large (ca. 400 ㎛) particle size. The good performance of the medium size (ca. 220 ㎛) dry water may be attributed to the balance between cooling effect of the water core and smothering effect of the silica particles. It is also revealed that small size dry water has poor flowability than large size dry water.

- Although hydrazine is an excellent liquid propellant, caution is required during storage and handling due to its high toxicity and reactivity. Safety guidelines should be established in consideration of the chemical reactivity by unintended leakage. In this study, the status of hydrazine facilities at launch site and safety standards for storing and handling were investigated and then, the reactivity between chemicals and hydrazine was analyzed. As a result of the analysis, hydrazine has reactivity with the exception of fuel oil. This paper emphasizes the imperative nature of constructing a dedicated hydrazine storage facility. Ensuring compatibility between hydrazine and the materials used in storage containers and handling equipment is crucial to prevent undesired reactions that could compromise safety. During rigid body collisions, there are local deformation on the contact surface of colliding bodies and it plays an important role in prediction of rigid body collisions. In this study, the local deformation of contact point during collisions has been modeled as linear, coupled and nonlinear compliance between normal and tangential direction of contact surface. An investigation is made of the phenomena occuring at the contact surface of rigid bodies for the impact and the result is discussed for each modeling of local deformations by various modelings.

Core-shell dry water (DW) has attracted significant attention as a promising candidate for future fire extinguishing agents, owing to its high water content, powdery structure and ease of handling. However, the lack of detailed information regarding the characteristics of DW has considerably hindered efforts to improve its fire extinguishing performance. This study is the first attempt to elucidate the origin of the effects of particle size of DW on fire extinguishment. Pristine DW was fractionated into three different particle sizes via careful sieving. Through systematic analyses, it could be determined that smaller DW could be vaporized at lower temperatures, thereby facilitating good cooling and smoldering of flames. However, small DW cannot sufficiently penetrate flames, which makes it difficult to reach the burning surface. However, medium-sized DW exhibited a balance in its cooling, smoldering, and penetration effects. Thus, it achieved better performance in fire extinguishment when compared to small- and large-sized DWs. It was also demonstrated that the fire extinguishing capability of medium-sized DW can be significantly enhanced by adding NaHCO3 in the water core of the DW.
