The purpose of the study is to analyze science textbooks with earth science content and social studies textbooks with geography content by comparing the common content in terms of grades, amounts and types of the learning materials, and the learning activities. This analysis is aimed at suggesting a sound direction for the future, revised version of the national curriculum. The subjects of the study are the science and social studies textbooks from grades three to ten. This study analyzes how the common learning content is presented in each type of textbook with respect to grades, amounts and types of the learning materials, and learning activities. The findings of this study are as follows. First, content overlaps were found in both the earth science and geography sections. The same levels of learning content were dealt with in both textbooks of the same grade. Learning content requiring specific scientific knowledge is presented in the geography sections of the textbooks prior to the earth science sections of the textbooks. The issues raised in this study suggest how the national curriculum should be revised along with the textbooks dealing with earth science and geography. (190 words) 본 연구의 목적은 지구 과학을 포함하는 과학 교과서와 지리를 포함하는 사회 교과서를 비교하여 공통된 내용을 제시하는 학년, 교과서 분량, 학습 자료의 형태와 활동 방법을 알아봄으로써, 특징을 분석하고 교육 과정 개정의 올바른 방향을 모색해 보는 것이다. 본 연구는 초등학교 3학년부터 고등학교 1학년까지의 과학 교과서와 사회 교과서를 대상으로 서로 연관성이 있는 내용을 뽑아 범주화했다. 핵심 학습 내용, 내용이 제시된 학년, 각 내용이 차지하고 있는 분량, 학습 내용에 접근하는 방법과 제시 자료를 알아보고, 지구 과학 영역과 지리 영역에서 공통적으로 등장하는 학습 내용을 기준으로 내용이 제시된 학년, 각 내용이 차지하고 있는 분량, 학습 내용에 접근하는 방법 및 제시 자료를 정리했다. 분석 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 지구 과학 영역 교과서와 지리 영역 교과서에 중복되는 부분이 많이 발견되었다. 이러한 중복은 동일 영역 내 학년 간 교과서 내용의 단순 중복 문제, 동일 학년에서 지구 과학 영역과 지리 영역의 학습 내용 중복 문제, 그리고 동일한 주제의 두 영역 간 학년 선후 문제 등에서 나타났다. 둘째, 중복되는 내용의 제시 방법은 다소 차이가 났다. 추후 교육 과정 개정과 교과서 개발 시 지구과학과 지리 교과목의 중복 문제 해결을 위한 논의가 필요하다.
