Red pepper is seriously damaged by thrips (Thrips palmi) and anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum acutatum throughout its development. Because of biotic constraints, producers often depend on chemicals that are expensive and have adverse effects on the environment, operator, and beneficial insects. In addition, resistance is developed because of the repeated use of chemicals. In recent decades, the use of microorganisms in crop protection has become a credible alternative because it is eco-friendly. In this study, we aimed to select isolates with insecticidal and fungicidal activities against the pathogens that cause anthracnose and thrips. We treated T. palmi adults and juveniles with 13 strains of entomopathogenic fungi (isolated from the soil by using the insect-bait method), and 6 strains showed excellent insecticidal activity (70-100%) 5 days after the treatment. The selected isolates were cultured with C. acutatum to screen for the strain with excellent anti-fungal activities, among which an isolate FT333 showed more than 95% control efficacy against C. acutatum in vitro. The isolate was identified as Isaria javanica through its morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis of the ITS and β-tubulin nucleotide sequences. The Isaria javanica FT333 isolate could be used effectively for dual bio-control of thrips and anthracnose during red pepper cultivation.

The palm thrips, Thrips palmi is one of the most important pests of greenhouse. But development of insecticide resistance caused by repeated treatment of chemical insecticide make difficult to control thrips at farm. In this study, insecticidal activity of entomopathogenic fungi, Isaria fumosorosea FG340 against palm thrips as alternatives to chemical insecticide was evaluated at laboratory and greenhouse and formulated I. fumosorosea FG340 was tested in laboratory and pepper field. I. fumosorosea FG340 caused 88.1~100.0% mortality in laboratory assay and 73.3~90.6% mortality in greenhouse assay after 7 days. Formulated I. fumosorosea FG340 showed 92.7%~100% mortality in pesticide-free pepper farm. Therefore we expected that I. fumosorosea FG340 will be used as effective control agents for thrips at farm.
담배거세미나방의 생물적 방제를 위한 곤충병원성 곰팡이 Beauveria bassiana의 선발 및 특성 검정

The tobacco cutworm, Spodoptera litura is polyphagous sporadic pest and difficult to control using chemical insecticides because of the development of insecticide resistance against almost all the insecticide group. For environmental friendly control of tobacco cutworm, entomopathogenic fungi could be used as alternative. We conducted bioassays to select high virulent isolate to larva of tobacco cutworm with twelve entomopathogenic fungi which were collected from soil samples by insect-bait method. As a result of bioassay using leaf disc, all twelve isolates showed high mortality as 100% and short medial lethal time (LT50) as from 2.38 to 3.5 days against third instar larva of S. litura. To select high virulent isolate at wide temperature range, germination rate and mycelial growth of isolates at different temperature (15, 20, 25, 30, 35℃) were observed. Among the twelve isolates, Beauveria bassiana FG317 showed relatively high germination rate and mycelial growth at between 15℃ and 35℃. Mortality of third instar larva of S. litura treated with B. bassiana FG317 (1 × 10<SUP>7</SUP> conidia/ml) was 84.5 ± 2.1% for 7days after treatment at potted Chinese cabbage. Based on these results, it is expected that B. bassiana FG317 can be used to control tobacco cutworm effectively.

As the demand of eco-friendly pesticide to control agricultural pest increases, does the need for mass culture to commercialize entomopathogen. In this study, we investigated mass production conditions for blasospore production of entomopathogenic fungi, Isaria fumosorosea FG340 which has high virulence against beet armyworm. Media containing 3% yeast extract and 3% dextrose (YD media, pH 9.0) inoculated with 5 × 10<SUP>4</SUP> conidia/ml of I. fumosorosea FG340 produced 1 × 10<SUP>9</SUP> blastospore/ml 4days after cultivation. Insecticidal activity to 3 instar larvae of beet armyworm of blastospore cultivated in YD media was 68.3~93.3% 3days after treatment which is similar to one of blasospore produced in PDB (60.0~83.3%). Therefore we expected that YD media will be used as cheap media to cultivate entomopathogenic fungi, I. fumosorosea FG340.
