Object: To investigate the characteristics of diffuse idiopathic hyperostosis (DISH) in Koreans. Methods: The nine patients of DISH were investigated in terms of symptom, involved area in simple X-ray, accompaning disease, serum uric acid level, and serum triglyceride and cholesterol. Results: Eight of nine patients were male, one patient was female, and their mean age was 64. Their symptoms were no symptom (2/9), neck pain (2/9), dorsal pain (2/9), and low back pain (3/9). The involved areas were the cervical vertebrae (1/9), the lower thoracic vertebrae (3/9), or the lower thoracic and upper lumbar vertebrae(5/9). The accompaning diseases were ankylosing spondylitis (1/9), degenerative joint disease (2/9), posterior laminectomy (1/9), diabetes mellitus (1/9), chronic active hepatitis (1/9), cerebrovascular accident (2/9), hypertension (2/9), chronic renal failure (2/9), and gout (2/9). In the cases involving thoracic vertebrae, the ossification was seen dominantly in the right side. Four of nine patients had diabetes mellitus, hyperuricemia (7.0 mg/dl in male and 6.6 mg/dl in female), or dyslipidemia (194 mg/dl in serum triglycerid level and 275 mg/dl in serum cholesterol level). Conclusions: In our cases of DISH, it was dominant in male and old age, and the diabetes mellitus or hyperuricemia was more frequently found than in general population.

This study investigates the effect of moxibustion on total cholesterol(TC) and triglyceride (TG) to prevent adult diseases and cardiovascular disease. The clinical subjects of this study were total 40 men and women, residing in Seoul. Among these subjects, 20 and 20 were subject to the experimental group and the contrast group respectively. To test the effect of moxibustion, questionnaire papers and forearm venous blood were used. For data processing, independent sample t-test and paired sample t-test were conducted by using the SPSS 18.0 program. Verification was made at a significance level of p〈.05. The results, obtained by comparing differences before and after moxibustion, are as follows: First, the study results about the effect of moxibustion on total cholesterol demonstrate that there was no significance before and after in the experimental and control groups. Second, the study results about the effect of moxibustion on HDL demonstrate that there was no statistical significance before and after in the experimental and control groups. Third, the study results about tire effect of moxibustion on LDL, demonstrate that there was a statistical significance in the before and after period. Lastly, the study results about the effect of moxibustion on Triglycerides(TG) demonstrate that there was a statistical significance before in the experimental and control groups.

A new ground transportation system is often simulated by the wing in ground effect(WIG). Recently, several<br/> kinds of experimental and computational studies are being carried out to investigate the WIG aerodynamic<br/> characteristics which are of practical importance to develop the new ground transportation vehicle system. These<br/> works are mainly based on conventional wind tunnel tests, but many problems associated with the WIG<br/> aerodynamic characteristics can not be satisfactorily resolved. In order to develop the new ground transportation<br/> vehicle system the WIG should be further investigated. To do this, it is necessary to develop a s imulator appropriate<br/> to the WIG aerodynamics. The objective of the present study is to clarify the aerodynamic characteristics of the<br/> WIG and to develop a new experimental test rig for the investigation of the WIG aerodynamics. Some preliminary<br/> experiments are performed to investigate the usefulness of the WIG simulator.

Many flight bodies are essentially imposed in gradually accelerating and decelerating free streams during<br/> taking-off and landing processes. However, the wing aerodynamics occurring in such a stream have not yet<br/> been investigated in detail. The objective of the present study is to make clear the aerodynamic characteristics<br/> of an aerofoil placed in the accelerating and decelerating free stream conditions. A computational analysis is<br/> carried out to solve the unsteady, compressible, Navier-Stokes equations which are discretized using a fully<br/> implicit finite volume method. Computational results are employed to reveal the major characteristics of the<br/> aerodynamics over the gradually accelerating aerofoil wings.

Geotextile containers for restoration of slopes form the interface between the containers during the restored to lost slopes, and therefore the relation displacements are developed including the sliding on the surface. Since, the shear strength on these interfaces is less than that of fill material in the container, the characteristics of shear strength on the interface governs the behavior of the restoration slopes. In general, a lot of natural properties of geotexiles is required to evaluate the safty of the geotextiles, Among the properties, the shear characteristics between geotextiles and soil is a important variable to assess the safety. From the results of full scale direct shear test, the residual shear strength is recommanded to use for design factors since a large deformation possibly occures on the geotextile containers.
