In the light of quality comparison the ratio of panaxadiol and panaxatriol contents was assayed in the extract of various ginseng products, whose origin of production and species of the original plants are different. Aglycone compositions of other ginsengs were not comparable with Korean ginseng in their ratio of panaxadiol and panaxatriol contents of dammarane glycosides.

As the projects of this institute, 280 species of plants which are currently used as herb drugs in Korea were screened on the presence of alkaloids, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, chalcones, lactones, glycosides, carbohydrates, terpenoids, steroids, proteins, polypeptides, saponins, and organic acids, and the most reliable presence of alkaloids detected by thin layer chromatography is added by screening of 75 species.

The seasonal variations in the contents of ginseng components were analyzed with the samples harvested from April to October. The contents of soluble components such as sugars, amino acids, terpenoid and total methanol extract, increased gradually from April to July and remained almost constant from July to October. Therefore the quality of ginseng harvested at July will not be expected to be significantly different with that of October.
Inula Sesquiterpene Lactone이 식물호흡에 미치는 영향

Alantolactone의 생물학적 작용기작을 구명하려는 목적에서 먼저 식물의 호흡과 생장에 마치는 영향을 조사하였다. Chlorella pyrenoidosa의 생장은 Inula lactone (alantolactone과 isolalantolactone)에 의하여 크게 억제되었으나, 반대로 호흡은 촉진되어서 산소소비량과 [$U-^{14}C$] glucose로부터의 $^{14}CO_2$ 생성이 모두 증가하였다. 감자에서 Inula lactone은 aged-slice의 호흡은 촉진시켰으나 생절편에 대하여는 별 영향을 미치지 못하였다. 한편 Inula lactone은 aging 과정에서 일어나는 전편의 호흡활성화를 억제할 수 있었으나 Inula lactone을 제거하연 철편의 호흡은 급격하게 증가되었다. In order to investigate the mode of biological action of alantolactone, its effects on the respiration and the growth of plants were examined. The rate of respiration of Chlorella pyrenoidosa was greatly enhanced in the presence of Inula sesquiterpene lactones (alantolactone+isoalantolactone), but the growth of cells was profoundly inhibited. Although Inula sesquiterpene lactones increased the oxygen consumption of the aged potato tuber slices, no effect was observed in the case of the fresh slices. And Inula sesquiterpene lactones also inhibited the activation of the respiration of the slices during the aging process.

한국인삼의 노화방지 효과를 입증하는 의도에서 인삼의 항산화활성을 다루었다. 인삼 또는 그 유효성분을 추출하여 마우스에 투여하면 알코홀 투여로 인하여 상승되는 지질 과산화물의 함량을 감소시켜주었으며 그 유효성분의 화학구조를 결정한 결과 3-hydroxy-2-methyl-$\gamma$-Pyrone (maltol)임을 밝혔다. This paper is concerned with the studies on the effective components possessing antioxidant activity, with a view to demonstrate the anti-aging activity of Korean ginseng. Feeding the extract of Korean ginseng or its effective component to mice inhibited strongly the lipid peroxidation induced by ethanol intoxication. From the extract of Korean red ginseng, one effective component, Compound A, mp. $143^{\circ}$, $C_6H_6O_3$, was isolated by chromatographic purification and its chemical structure was determined as 3-hydroxy-2-methyl-$\gamma$-pyrone (maltol).
