Conceived as a film production project of the Nara International Film Festival, 〈Midsummer’s Fantasia〉 is an independent art film completed by the support from a number of international film festival production funds, independent film support funds, etc. Production funding from film festivals enables the film festivals to function as a distribution platform as well as a main agent of the production, and provides a rare opportunity to struggling independent film makers under not so favorable circumstances. The above-mentioned project is an international co-production film between Korea and Japan, co-produced by a world-renowned Japanese master filmmaker Kawase Naomi, aiming at international film festivals and art film theaters from the development stage. The film has been awarded by the Busan International Film Festival, the Seoul Independent Film Festival, the Korean Association of Film Critics Award, etc., and has attracted more than 30,000 viewers, since its theatrical release in Korea. This study describes the film’s development and production processes as a case study on internationally co-producing independent art films, and considers how the project could derive creative work from various limitations and challenges. Furthermore, covering issues on distribution of domestic art films, this study seeks to find solutions on how to make art films sustainably.

이란-뱀파이어 영화 <밤을 걷는 뱀파이어 소녀> 스타일 연구

<A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night>(2014) directed by British-born second generation Iranian-American Ana Lily Amirpour, set in‘the Iranian ghost-town Bad City’attempts to make how the hybridization of multi-cultures makes interesting interpretations culture-politically, presenting a female vampire skateboarding in a striped t-shirt and a black chador. In traditional horror films, mainly male-Dracula was the center of the vampire narrative as other, but since the post-modernism era, vampire films try to shift women from the passive and dependent victim to the subjective and independent main agent. And the main character of the film,‘The Girl’who is a female Muslim vampire takes a step forward to punish men who commit gender violence. Shot in black and white, the film puts images ahead of narrative, while featuring Iranian actors, speaking Farsi. Furthermore, the film crosses over Iranian politics into American-European pop cultures with this eclectic mix of Iran's rock, British electro-pop and Ennio-Morricone-like western stylings. This study focuses on the style featured in <A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night> which has successfully transformed and transplanted a vampire story into a critical contemporary discourse, mixing multiple genres and citing cultural trends while not following the traditional conventions of vampire films.
