British Hydraulics research Station's Sparse Scheme was suggested for the solution of two dimensional finite difference tidal equations. 2D-numerical tidal model formed with 4.8km rectangular cells was set up to find out the barrage effects on tidal ranges of some possible areas for tidal power generation in Korea. The comparisons were made hetween spring tidal ranges with and without barrages at the entrance of Asan Bay, Garorim bay, Cheonsu bay and near Incheon Bay. Because of the coarseness of the grid, the model results could not represent the values of changes precisely. However the results show that the tidal amplitude near Incheon Bay increased by about 40cm by setting a barrage and about 50cm increase near the entrance of Asan Bay, respectively. But there were only a few centimeter changes in other areas.

The pilot tidal current power plant is to be constructed at the Uldolmok between Chindo and Haenam, during next year. and extensive coastal engineering research works have been carried out. In this paper we describes some observation results of the tide and tidal current. as well as modeling work in order to investigate the tide and tidal current regime change in relation to the tidal current power plant (TCPP) construction. The special modeling skill in order to consider the turbine operation in the TCPP is developed and applied to the estimation for the flow regime change by the simple layout of the tidal current power plant.

A new type of soft ground breakwater was recently developed, which does not need ground improvement because of light weight and structural characteristics. The various studies about consolidation settlements and lateral behavior of proposed soft ground breakwater have been conducted. But, the systematic investigations on the construction performance and long-term settlements of new type breakwater has not been accomplished. In this study, construction simulation of soft ground breakwater with soil box model test and experiments of the long-term wave loaded breakwater were performed. The results of test shows that it is possible to compensate differential settlements by dead loading and/or suction pressure, and to reduce the consolidation settlements by preloading method. It was also found that the vertical and lateral displacements of long-term wave loaded breakwater were negligible.

The Korean peninsula has a number of coastal sites where the rhythmic rising and lowering of water surface due to tides result in strong tidal current. The kinetic energy of these currents can be efficiently exploited by using tidal current turbines. The pilot tidal current power plant is to be constructed at the Uldolmok between Chindo and Haenam. Extensive coastal engineer ing research works have been carried out. This paper describes some observation results of field campaign, design of the supporting structure of a pilot plant of 1,000kW and a future tidal current power plant and so on.

The feasibility study for tidal power plant (TPP) has been carried out for the Siwha area inside the Kyunggi bay of the Kyunggi Bay of the Yellow and East china Seas, by KORDI (Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute) and continuing research works for tidal energy development are under progress in the several sites inside the Kyunggi Bay. In this paper we describes some results of the modeling efforts in relation the tidal regime change by Siwha TPP operation, as well as other coastal oceanographic research works involved in TPP development in the coastal region.
