7 Background : The abuse, misuse, and adverse effects to topical drugs have been widespread in Korea due to lack of awareness of seriousness of drug abuse and misuse, and improper designation of prescription and non-prescription drugs.

Vol.42 No.2

N/A Background: Intense pulsed light(IPL) systems are high intensity pulsed sources which emit noncoherent, defocused, polychromatic light in a broad wavelength spectrum of 400-1200㎚. The mechanism of action of such light systems corresponds to the selective photothermolysis. Nowdays, IPL system widely used in dermatologic field such as unwanted hair removal, epidermal melanocytic lesions, vascular lesions, and photorejuvenation Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical results of diverse epidermal melanocytic lesions after treatment with an IPL source. Method: Twenty patients with epidermal melanocytic lesions were enlisted. IPL treatment was administered to the patients in a 4-week sessions. Irradiation wavelength was controlled using cutoff filters ranging from 400 to 700㎚, with a fluence of 10-13.5j/㎝2 with double pulse illumination and a pulse width of 7mses. Results: By the end of the study, three attending physicians assessed the results for 85% of the subjects as excellent or good, with 85% of the patients reporting that same results; however, heep lesion such as Becker`s nevus showed an average clearance of fair. No specific adverse effects except two case of blisters were observed after treatment. Conclusion: Treatment of epidermal melanocytic lesions in Asian skin using IPL is an effective, safe, and rapid treatment, with relatively few side effects and high patient satisfaction. 체부 백선의 임상 및 진균학적 관찰

장수정 ( Jang Su Jeong ),최용범 ( Choe Yong Beom ),안규중 ( An Gyu Jung ) 대한피부과학회 2004 大韓皮膚科學會誌 Vol.42 No.2

N/A Background: Tinea corporis includes all superficial dermatophyte infections of the skin other than those involving the scalp, beard, face, hands, feet, and groin. The most common lesion is an annular lesion with central clearing area. Objective: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the correlation of clinical and mycological features of tinea corporis. Method: We performed clinical and mycological study on 105 cases of tinea corporis at Department of Dermatology, Konkuk University Hospital from August 2002 to October 2003. Results: The ratio of male to female was 1:1.02. Tinea corporis was most prevalent in the twenties. Of the clinical variants of tinea corporis, the annular type was most commonly noted. Sixty-nine cases (66%) had the single lesion. In 71 cases (67.7%), the size of individual skin lesion was less than 5㎝ in diameter. The unexposed area (55.7%) was more frequently affected than exposed area (44.3%) and the most common site was anterior chest (20.1%). Coexisting fungal infection was found in 60 cases (57.1%), and the cases of tinea pedis was the most common. Forty-five cases (42.9%) had a history of contact with animals that were thought be to infection source. Among 105 cases, dermatophytes were isolated in 73 cases. They were Trichophyton (T.) rubrum (58 cases), T. mentagrophytes (8 cases), Microsporum (M.) canis (5 cases), M. gypseum (1 case), and T. tonsurans (1 case). No species specificity was noted in annular type, and M. canis was more commonly isolated from the smaller lesion. Conclusion: Zoophilic dermatophyte infection associated with prior contacts with animals and infection causes by introduced species are increased by rise of families breeding animal pets and more frequent abroad interchanges.(Korean J Dermatol 2004;42(2):166~172)

Translation of terminology in Korean in the field of medicine has been one of the important tasks since several decades in Korea. Translation of medical terminology is deeply indebted by the Japanese scholars and direct adaptation of their work by the Korean scholars was the main trend since long time ago. It is because of we are sharing both Chinese character and the similar grammar structure. Although some modification and addition of new translation which is more suitable in the Korean language system has been tried in the different level in the past editions of English-Korean medical terminology books, extensive work has been performed in the 4th edition which was published by the Korean Medical Association in 2001. The Korean Dermatological Association has published first edition of dermatology terminology book in 1983 and the 2nd edition in 1993. Many of them adapted in the 4th edition of the terminology book of the Korean Medical Association. However, there are many changes including some new trial with innovative ideas. This special article covers the difference of two terminology books between 4th edition published by the Korean Medical Association and the 2nd edition of Korean Dermatology Association, which was summarized in the Table.
