Vol.18 No.-

Lee Sang(1910-1937) practiced paintings, novels, poems and essays, when Korea was a colonial country. Especially he participated Guinhoi(Nine Members Circle) discussing literary topics, which introduced to the Western modernism to Korea. As Bulfinch said that mythology is the handmaid of literature, the traditional myths form the backbone of the world literature. Creating his works I think Lee Sang used Sam Jog O(三足烏), a kind of mythic birds as the messenger living in the sun in the Oriental and Korean myth. It is similar to Phoenix in the Western myth, and when the young Phoenix has grown up and gained sufficient strength, it lifts its nest from the tree which is its own cradle and its parent`s sepulchre and deposits it in the temple of the sun. As Joyce` novels are the immediate example of the reinvestment of mythology in modernistic art at the colonial period of Ireland, through Guinhoi in the colonial period of Korea, Lee Sang interested in Joyce`s mythic narrative and in the process of writing he recognized a Korean traditional myth, Sam Jog O, the crow with three legs living in the sun. This myth was disappeared in the colonial period, however, it is refreshing now. At the colonial period Choi Nam-Sun researched the old Korean myth with Northern Asian and he asserted its importance. Like him Lee Sang also probably knew it. Kim Ki Rim, a Korean modernist, called him "Jupiter" of Greek-Roman myth in a poem of reconsidering Lee Sang. Through the above we know that Lee Sang composed his works by bird images in myths.

        웰즈(H. G. Wells)와 엘리슨(Ralph Ellison): 『보이지 않는 인간』(The Invisible Man)의 불가시성의 은유

Vol.19 No.-

This paper is to examine the metaphors of invisibility in The Invisible Man. by H. G. Wells and Ralph Ellison. The former, Wells, a British writer, wrote it as a scientific fiction, which described Griffin as an "invisible man" by an experiment to "himself". After he realized he was uncomfortable with it, he was being in process of return to the original; fought with Kemp, his counterpart, and finally died. As a scientific fiction writer he had always thought "the human" in the future world. The later, Ralph Ellison, an African-American, also wrote it as a conforming novel, which pictured a narrator without name and "invisible man" in the White American society. As they described "man" as "invisible" we are involved in a vast counterfeit world. This is not to assert that Ellison`s invisible man is himself counterfeit, but to suggest he undermines whatever he says or does by his insistence on invisibility. In it the protagonist remains faceless, even nameless. Ellison has made us recognize the black in the Age of Conformity, though Karl designates 1950s is the age of counterfeit and invisibility. Consequentially, though each Wells and Ellison wrote The Invisible Man using the same title, we can read them as the former interpreted it negatively while the latter author did it positively.

Vol.27 No.2

This paper is to examine the double consciousness of Jews in Philip Roth's Operation Shylock (1993). This novel revolves around the ironic use of doubles and postmodernist bluring of the boundaries between fact and fiction, all related from Roth's particular Jewish perspective. He developed his art of impersonation into Operation Shylock's most excessive and audacious form. In Operation Shylock, subtitled with "A Confession", Philip Roth, author, insists that "it is not truth, but fiction." The novel describes an adventure in which Philip Roth, who is the main character of the novel and the same name with author, encounters Philip Roth, an impostor who claims himself as the novelist. The struggle between them, enacted mainly in Jerusalem, involves much verbal argument and soliloquy about the past, present, and future of the Jew, and it is full of controversial. As some critics said fiction is a world made of words, Roth wrote Operation Shylock in this manner with words. From this, we can see that he created the double consciousness of Jews, which is Zionism to build a new country in Jerusalem with the greatest hope for Jews in the past, and the Diaspora to rebuild a country in Europe through the history of Jews on the earth. We can also see he wrote it by using the main character Shylock in The Merchant of Venice written by William Shakespeare as a parody for metafiction, which is fiction itself, that is, fiction with self-consciousness. < Jeonju University >

Vol.43 No.5

Kinetic energy(KE) rod warhead system is a new interceptor which combines advantages of existing ones. This system is less dependant on a precision guidance than direct hit type warhead and gives high penetration rates than blast fragmentation type warhead. In this paper, isotropic KE rod warhead system is introduced with detonation/deployment model. A penetration effects of the deployed rods are calculated using TATE penetration equation. Also, an engagement performance analysis method is suggested. Finally, an optimal detonation time and engagement geometry is derived by Monte-Carlo simulation in various engagement situation using the performance analysis factor.

Salinger’s “Teddy”(1953) in Nine Stories is the first chance to meet Orientalized persona by a Zen koan, which is “We know the sound of two hands clappings. But what is the sound of one hand clapping?” “Teddy” is composed of a dialogue between the ten-year-old child prodigy Teddy McArdle and a skeptical education professor Bob Nicholson. Though some critics saw the title character of Teddy as an obnoxious, psychotic brat. a astute reader recognized that Salinger was sympathetic to Teddy’s a Vedantic vision of life, and later critics recognized that God-seeker Teddy is the prototype from the re-designed Seymour in the Glass Family Series. Meditation is a direct challenge to our narrow rationalistic habits, and education also should be based on meditation since Zen is an anti-rational Buddhist sect which means meditation. and koan is central to the Zen practice. Accordingly Salinger’s Oriental religious ideas have made him an important figure showing Teddy’s reincarnation in the Oriental religion, (Jeonju University)

Vol.55 No.3

This paper is to examine the meaning of parting Marjorie from Nick in "The Three-Day Blow". It was a story about separation of Marjorie against Nick, but critics understand it as a story of Nick`s initiation. We can see Marjorie Bump, an Indian girl as Nick`s lover, in the work. and she determined parting from Nick by herself and went to Italy. In the process of all she determined parting from Nick without a talking with him. Here we can know Marjorie`s appearance of transformation differently after the earlier Indian woman in his stories. So we can understand that ``blow`` in "The Three-Day Blow" means an event, a situation, into a particular extreme state like Marjorie`s attitude toward Nick. (Jeonju Univerity)

Vol.- No.31

As Thomas Bulfinch says that mythology is the handmaid of literature, we can see Korean writers such Kim Ki-rim and Yi Sang as examples of Joyce's mythic narrative in literary works. Though Joyce is the immediate example of the reinvestment of myth during the colonial period of Ireland, we know that myths are a representation of the collective unconsciousness of people and form the backbone of literature. After Korea was occupied by Japan, Korea was dominated by Japan's hard policies in the 1930s. Through Oguma Eiji's The Myth of Homogeneous Nation in Japan we can see that the phase of Korean traditional myths disappeared during that period. He wrote this book to explain the removal of Korean traditional myths in Japan's to fully dominate Korea and emphasized the myth of a homogenecus Japan. In order to fully grasp Korean myths, we learn about Japan's myth policy focusing on the foundation myths of old Korea. Choi Nam-sun also researched old Korean myths including Northern Asian myths during the colonial period according to Japan's myths policies as in the case of Nazi myths. Due to the nature of myths and their collective unconsciousness, it is important to call more attention to Japan's myths policies not only to reconstruct traditional Korean myths, but also to reestablish a tradition of Korean culture.
