The purpose of this paper is to find out the applicability of relationship marketing concept in a professional ship management context primarily on ship management service business. The dramatic growth in ship management industry leads to the intensified competition among professional ship management companies in the world. Thus they have tried to find out ways of ensuring competitiveness to be a market leader in this industry. The fundamental base of marketing is that it involves exchanges. Professional ship management involves a series of transactions and exchanges between client and ship manager. Ship management companies will ensure competitiveness by applying the concept of relationship marketing to real practices.

The purpose of this empirical study is to examine and explore the relationships between three variables; shipping companies’ service quality, customer reaction and relationship. Special features of this study could be summarized as following. First, this is empirical study based on market research according to the definition of ’customer’ as freight forwarders. Second, to evaluate shipping companies’ service quality, 5 components of SERVPERF model was used. Third, to test service quality, customer reaction and relationship, statistical analysis was used with tools of SPSSWIN ver 15.0 and AMOS ver 7.0. For effective study, many thesis have been obtained through literature survey. However, major results were compiled from directly structured questionnaire, which were collected from freight forwarders in Korea. Major research findings could be summarized as follows. First, correlations between service quality and customer reaction are found to be positive except service quality component of ’tangibles’ with customer satisfaction. Second, correlation between customer reaction and relationship is found to be positive even in some previous researches of other similar logistic industries, no correlations were found.

The purpose of this study is not only to evaluate service orientation, as a socially constructed variable but also empirically to examine its relationship with business performance in international logistics service firms. The premise behind the study is that service-oriented firms that strategically choose to emphasize service excellence as a value-added deliverable, will perform significantly better than firms which do not possess this orientation. Thus professional ship management involves a series of transactions and exchanges between client and ship management company. Ship management companies in Korea will enhance international competitiveness by applying the relevant strategy of international business to real ship management businesses and practices.

Shipping Business is one of the most important business fields in Korea national economy with the helps of protectionism in Korean shipping. Furthermore the Marine Environments are changed. The increase of excessive tonnage, the weakening of liner conference, the protectionism in international trade, the increase of the marketing concept, are the main factors of the change of marine environments. The objective of the study is to analyze the measures that will help the Korean shipping industry strengthen international competitiveness. In doing so, the study will focus on international marketing strategy of shipping industry. Thesedays, the strategy of Globalization of the firm effects the shipping business that transports cargo for global exchange. So, ocean container shipping firms carried out total shipping service, expansion of a sphere of business through cooperation with other shipping company, enhanced shipping service quality and various global management strategy at the three major route. This study carried out a comprehensive research and futhermore, established the international marketing strategy of Korean Shipping firms considering the Globalization of these firms. Second, tradition of maritime nations considered the free competition the most important factor in international shipping market. And then, marketing mix (4P's) strategy of shipping company is strongly needed by shipping company.
