Before the inflow of western culture into the Korean literature, it was related earlier with Oriental thought which consists of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism not only Shamanism, and among them Confucianism was most prevalent. Our ingenuous basic culture in its early stages developed into advanced cultures with the aid of Confucian view of life, and the society of Yi Dynasty attained the highest perfection of confucian culture, where an ethical movement was formed with the three fundamental principles and the five moral disciplines in human relations and its literature developed together with the creative reflection of this movement. But the utilitarianism of confucianism produced unfavorable side effects of forming hypercritical personality, which brought the citizens' awakening to the intrinsic value of humanity. Confucian relation with Korean literature was found sometimes in the way of light and sometimes of shadows in many ancient works, and the present paper deals mainly with the characteristics of its thought as the base of literature and the literary transfiguration. The concrete examination of confucian shadows upon the individual works and the field of each genre will be made in the near future.

This article is made to work out a devise for recognizing entombed values of poems by Cheon Sangbyeong. His apperance of oddity should not only be disrespected but also be respected for his very pure and bold way of life as a literary man. Compared with Lao-tzu, such style of his life is deeply understood and called forth a response in our heart. Lao-tzu is thought to be the most unremarkable, straightforward, mysterious and paradoxical one among the great religious teachers. Cheon's unreal life and uncommon behavior have something in common with Lao-tzu' disposition which creates a unique atmosphere on his poems. Cheon Sangbyeong seems to be a man of mysticism. in that he expressed himself with paradoxical truth in everyday lives together with his poems. It is easy to be a scholar of taoism but it is not so easy to be a man of taoism. While a scholar of taoism simply seeks the knowledge of it, a man of taoism stays in the world of truth which is quite different from the earthly existence. Comparing Cheon Sangbyeong with Lao-tzu' taoism. Cheon is regarded rather as a man of taoism than as a scholar of taoism. It is because both his real life and literary works cut a figure with commonness and transcendence.

The Chinese poems written by women in the period of Yi Dynasty may well be devided into three classes according to the writer's social status :those by wives of high officials, by their concubines and by kisaeng-girls. The themes of these women's poems are found to be different one another in view of their writer's status. In the present article, I tried to generalize the thematic distinctive features of the poems with reference to their different status of the poets.

The present lecture is planned to understand the classics deeply. For the purpose of deep understanding of classics, we employ all the resources to have students take positive parts rather than relying upon professors' teaching in passive ways. Students are supposed to read the text in advance and write the outline of what they will lay in the class for that purpose. The province of classics is rather wide and we would better confine the material to sacred books in order to approach them with high tension and interest in a collective way. And here we take as a text the Classic of the classics which contains the words and deeds of the sages. By understanding this kind of classics more nearly and deeply, we expect the students to be helped to find the right way in this corrupt and disorderly world. This lecture makes a point of approaching the classics in a new way tiding over the mere reading of them, and living in the spirit of the classics at this very moment eventually.
