The purpose of this research was to explore an optimal model for measuring student engagement in physical education (PE) through investigation into the characteristics and types of student engagement in PE class situation based on the theory of learning. To this end, 587 secondary(middle and high) school students in Incheon area participated in open and structural surveys. An inductive content analysis conducted on 625 pieces of source material collected from the open survey identified 23 subject areas converging on 4 factors of emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and proactive engagement. Based on the open survey results and pilot study scales on leaner engagement, preliminary scales with 64 questions were constructed to measure student engagement in PE. A series of exploratory and confirmative factor analyses were then conducted to verify optimal measurement structure for student engagement in PE. The results revealed that student engagement had relatively high model acceptance for 3 factor 12 question structure of emotional, cognitive, and behavioral engagement. However, through a measurement invariance test, the 4 factor 16 question structure that includes proactive engagement in addition was also identified as a valid measurement structure of utility regardless of gender and (middle or high school) grade. The results were then further discussed in terms of the significance of measuring student engagement in PE, and also in the aspect of follow-up research.
